Oh my goodness - haha, I nearly fell out of my chair thinking ot myself "........ wow you are really ahead of your time it was like back to the future? ......." Yeah I'm gonna go that route too I think, get a 2.5Ghz i7 (Late OCT) 17 inch MacBook PRO then upgrade the entire thing with 16GB ram and throw in an SSD and remove the super drive. Us the HDD as an external time machine. ^_^

I ended up buying last year's model of the 17 inch PBP (1911). It has i7 chips and 8 GB of memory. I bought it from an ordinary dealer, and got a good price (since it had been discontinued). At that time (about 2 months ago) there seemed to have been quite a few around. I have been very satisfied.

Of course you can always have it customized.

Does anyone here know someone who has put together their own custom 17" MacBook PRO from available raw materials?

I noticed a lot of ebay sellers with parts, like the housing etc? I guess the CPU chip would be the most difficult obstacle? I can't believe that all the best designs are from designers at Apple (alone), because it appears that there is NO competition out there in terms of design genius, Macs are the most beautiful looking machines.

I wish there are better designers out there so that the competition is even more fierce and varied (for design sake).

I have been saving up for a POWERHOUSE new 17" MacBook PRO workhorse, so I can retire my 2007 one, but am still really disappointed that Apple offers no formal explanation if they will refresh a totally brand new 17" in the near future or if they outright and totally ditched that Pro line. Very sad year for me.

Thank you.

"but am still really disappointed that Apple offers no formal explanation"

There's no reason for a "formal explanation". The fact that the product was not updated, and was discontinued seems to be sufficient. The MBP line is not a simple collection of parts rather, it is a system. Switching one part or another on the main logic board is impossible for a consumer.
