Scrolling problems on Google News

For a few weeks now, Safari frequently gets into a mode when visiting the Google News site, in which the down arrow key cannot be used to scroll the screen. In this mode, the vertical scroll bar (often? always?) cannot be moved. To deal with this, I typically quit Safari and use Firefox to look at Google News.

Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone know a workaround?

This is on MacBook Pro 15" built in late 2010, OSX 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7.

OK, did that, and on a following access to Google News, the problem did not occur. But since the problem was intermittent anyway, not much is proved. FWIW, sometimes hitting the ESC key could clear the problem, suggesting that perhaps Safari was paying attention to some kind of form field somewhere on the page. I'm close to feeling sorry I asked, because the problem is so poorly defined.
