you can change your email to be the contact email address but still keep the same apple ID.  All you have to do is update your payment information and on that page they will ask you which email to contact you.  after the update the email will go to the new email you put in.

thanks for the information. when you say"update your payment information" - are you talking about in itunes or somewhere else? where exactly do you update the information? we have tried on the apple id management page and it doesn't work. cheers

go to then go to the online store. after that, click on your account then go to update default address and billing information. after that your email would be send to the new address even though your apple id still the same.

Sorry, but I don't see any way to update the primary email. I bought a computer online 7 hours ago, and apparently the email went to my address, even tho I have 2 other emails addresses on my account. I can only delete addresses, not change the default.

brilliant! it worked. thanks very much earthkid. hours of talking to countless apple 'help' people could not solve this problem but you have. thank you thank you thank you

did you buy your computer from apple?  if so, they will ask you for your address and email address and billing information and that is where you were suppose to put your desire email address. then apple would update your email to your desire one even though your apple ID still the same. if not, then follow my instruction above.

Thank you, EarthKid.  Apple can be infuriating.  You found a "loophole" to get around their seemingly-purposeful ways of making things difficult.  In case you are a new reader of this thread, let me lay out EarthKid's solution.

    The Problem:

If your AppleID is something like, then you can't change it to anything else.  Why not?  Who knows?  That's just apple

But worse, if you somehow set your "primary email" address for for your AppleID to match your AppleID name (as they suggest), then now your emails are going to  And unless you've been paying some subscription fee, those emails are completely inaccessible!

It gets worse.  Because now you can't change your primary email back to something useful again, at the AppleID site!  So, verifications, receipts, whatever, go into the great beyond.  The stuff up above is simply annoying.  *This* is the problem.

    The Solution, thanks to EarthKid:

You can't fix it through the AppleID site (why? who knows.), but you CAN fix it through the apple online store.  Go to the online store ( -> store) and sign into your account.  There, under "edit payment information" (why there? who knows...) you can change the address from the stupid to something else.

And if you go back to the AppleID site, you will see that, indeed, while your AppleID will never change, at least your "primary email address" has been changed!

Oh, and you'll see a message with a "helpful suggestion" to make your primary email address the same as your ( AppleID.  Don't.

Apple offered users of .mac email addresses the option to carry them forward into iCloud when they closed dotmac. That offer was time limited. That offer has expired and seems to have been forgotten. My .mac email address works fine, but I cannot edit it.

Since your address works you did migrate from MobileMe to iCloud in time. You can't change the primary address on an iCloud account, and as your Apple ID login is also your address you can't change that either.

Thanks, Roger. This has not been a problem so far that ones apple id is constrained by ones (antique) .mac email address.

pmacdd, I lost my address the other day. The error message is that my account is over its storage limit, which is not the case.

I guess it was a good run for me.

This is nothing less than fantastic and amazing. I have had this discussion with iTunes support  jun-sept 2012 with no solution. I am amazed that the solution was so easy. Not saying that it was easy to find!! I am so thankful earthkid! I tried to change it to but it wouldn't accept, but worked fine.

Yes you can. Set it up like it's a iCloud account.

When they ask for you email adress enter the old .mac address.

This has solved a problem i have had for years! I somehow ended up using two Apple IDs, one for my iTunes and one for my iCloud. My iCloud was always set up to my .mac address, and i was never able to verify the email so was stuck in limbo being unable to edit my primary email address without first verifying the email that never existed! Since most of the useful stuff is on my .mac ID, i have decided to move all of my information over to that account, even though before i was using a gmail account for everything! So stressful!

This is an amazing answer to a stupid problem that should never have existed in the first place! I thought i would never ever be able to solve it! Worked 100% and couldn't thank you enough!!
