Yes, it's possible to upgrade to Leopard, OS X 10.5, if you have sufficient free hard disk space available.

Minimum Leopard system requirements here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3759

If you don't already own a copy of Leopard, it IS quite expensive, over $100, and is not actively supported by Apple.

Snow Leopard minimum requirements here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575

It's more cost-effective to upgrade your RAM to 1 or 2GB, and purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade for $29.

OS X 10.7 'Lion' is absolutely not supported on your Core Duo Macbook.

Thank you for all of this information. So let me clarify: If I buy more RAM, I can purchase the Snow Leopard Upgrade and install it? Do I have to do a clean install or can I install over Tiger?

I have 40+GB of HD space available. I just need more RAM.

Yes, I know I can not upgrade to Lion or higher, that's fine, I have Lion on my iMac. 🙂

Thanks for all the informative links. Really appreciate it.

You can upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc.... And you will have to install Rosetta if you have any third party Power PC applications http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/snow_leopard_installing_rosetta/ I recently upgraded an older MacBook (model 1,1) straight from 10.4 to 10.6.

You can order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from the Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM and 5gb of free space on your hard drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

A retail 10.5 Leopard disk will run you around $200

To upgrade your iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
