Exporting RAW photos

Hi. I am using Aperture 3. I shoot pictures in RAW. I have a couple of questions. If I export a RAW photo as JPEG and then re-export that same image as a TIFF do I lose any quality? I like to put some pictures on my iPad 2 as JPEG. I then would like to re-export those same images as a full resoultion TIFF for back-up.

Also, in the Aperture-Export Preset Pane, under TIFF it says 72 DPI. Should I leave it at that or change it to 300 DPI?

Thanks

You will not loose any quality no matter how many times you export an image from Aperture.

Now if you were to take the exported JPG and re-import that into Aperture and then export it again you would loose quality but as long as your working off the master (ah, original) then there is no image degradation.

As for you question concerning the DPI setting on export. How you set that depends on the final use of the image. If you are not printing the image then the setting is meaningless.

The JPEG quality will depend on what you select for the compression in the Image Quality slider (higher number = less compression and generally means better quality, but larger file size on disk). The TIFF file won't be compressed and therefore you will get the full quality of the Version you see in Aperture.

In both cases, you are most likely discarding information from the RAW file since you are working with a rendered file that was run through the OS X RAW decoder. Since RAW is proprietary, it may be that some information is not being decoded fully by OS X. Most people would recommend backing up the RAW files for future use.

The DPI will only matter when printing really, although image viewing programs (e.g., Photoshop) will use the DPI information as PPI and display accordingly. The image size in inches / mm will be smaller than if exported at 72, but printing at 300 DPI will have a significantly better print quality at 100% or under size. I think the decision depends on what other program(s) you would use to change the DPI or PPI settings and how it or they compare to how Aperture's results.

For my part, I export at 150 - 300 depending on my end use since I like the way Aperture handles the math.

Hope that helps in some way. 😉

Thanks for your answer. I edit my RAW photos and then export the version. Since you can't export as a DNG what is the best way to export a version without losing information? I gather from what you said, every time I export an image I will lose some information whether it be a TIFF or JPEG on export. I have been backing up my RAW photos before I bring them into Aperture. Also, should I use TIFF 8 bit or 16 bit? I notice when I export at 16 bit TIFF it is a huge file.

Thanks

Do you have a managed Aperture Library? Then the best backup of your edited versions with respect to preserving the full quality would be to create a vault of your library. This will enable you to recreate the library, if it should become corrupted. If your library is referenced you need to backup the masters as well in addition to the vault.

If you want to use tiff to backup versions, only 16 bit will give you the full photometric resolution, but it creates huge files, as you noticed.

That is not really difficult:

see the online version of the Aperture 3 User Manual, chapter "Creating Vaults"

The Vault Controls are at the bottom of the Library Inspector panel; click the cogwheel to disclose them, also the "Show vaults" button.

User uploaded file

Select "Add Vault" from the pop-up menu; this will create a new vault, empty vault. To actually backup your library make an uupdate of the vault, as soon as the vault has been created.
