MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I have an LG Plasma TV and an LG Retina Mac...am I 2x screwed? LOL...

I've had the TV for 3 years...there's definitely some initial ghosting as you turn on the TV, but NONE while actually watching stuff on TV. It works fine and I'm happy with it.

Now as for this Retina Mac...I've had it for 3 months. I suppose I can live with it a tad bit longer, but my question is: For those of you that have had your LG Retina Mac for 1 year or more, what can I expect?

In this thread many people have gotten replacements for image retention. Some have had trouble getting a replacement and some have gotten their replacement very easily. Those who get replacements get a Samsung display that has a yellow tint.

I, and many others who have received replacement Samsung displays, have not experienced a yellow screen.

In fact, after calibrating my display properly, the replacement display's out-of-the-box color profile actually appeared a bit on the bluish or cool side. Although I don't discount that you may have received conssecutive exceptionally yellow defective Samsung replacement displays, until you actually calibrate your display, or get a chance to sit your machine side-by-side with a properly calibrated Retina Macbook Pro, you will never know for certain if it's your display or your eyes that's the problem. I've made suggestions as to how you could go about this without cost to yourself, but you still haven't done it.

Listen, anybody who's read my posts on this thread knows that I am no Apple apologist. Heck, I've been suspended twice. However, I think it's important that we're 100% sure about what we call an issue, because if we're not 100% sure, and we turn out to be wrong, we dilute the integrity of the original argument. Again, you may be right Merch, but until you've compared your rMBP with a calibrated rMBP (or any calibrated screen for that matter - i.e. walk into a photography studio and politely ask them for 5 minutes of their time) and compared the same image on both screens, we'll never know.

Once I received my replacement Samsung display, everything was great. This is the nicest machine I've ever worked on and has been very reliable, almost boringly so. It just works. No crashing. No conflicts. No repairing of permissions. I've had mine since July 2012, when they first came out.

P.S.

This is me ------> 😁

I have the 15in Retina Macbook Pro 2012 with the LG panel. I have had issues with dead pixels and ghosting. I got in contact with Mike Hatch, I guess he is like a customer service rep for Tim Cook. He told me to take my mac to the apple store, it is out of warranty but he said if they confirmed that the display was ghosting nad having a problem that they would just take care of it. Well they ran their test but they said that everyting was normal even when I showed them the image retention problem. They wanted 600 dollars to fix a computer that cost 3000k. I really hope they recall this crap and get this fixed, because this is ridiclous.

Do you have other Apple stores in your area you could visit? It seems based on what I've read in this forums and my own personal experience that the particular Genius you talk to might be more or less sympathetic.

Got my MacBook Pro retina 15" display replace because of stuck pixel, it was samsung panel. The store guy didn't even asked any question and replaced the screen in 3 days(No offcial apple store in india).

Now it's again samsung 🙂 with no stuck/dead pixel but the screen is a bit yellowish. So i applied color profile and it's absolutely gorgeous now. BTW i have only 2days left for my apple care.

What's the current experience getting a Macbook Pro retina LG display replaced/repaired in the UK?

This rMBP 15" with LG display has started showing real bad image persistence after 40 seconds displaying any bright content, after about 4 minutes the persistence is noticeable so you can read the e-mail you were looking at on the retained image alone. Plus a stuck pixel area to make things more interesting.

Going to get it the looked at tomorrow in Reading, having to go through repair after repair to get a working Samsung display will be a huge waste of time, so was wondering what are people's experiences of late. Any tips much appreciated!

Same here. Dead pixels and image retention.

Apple Store replaced my rMBP's (2012) screen after performing a test. They clearly saw the image retention issue. It was an LG and was replaced (2 day repair under AppleCare) with a Samsung. Same minor yellow tint. Simple color profile change with slight blue and it's great!

Got 15 inch Macbook Retina (2.6, 8gb ram, 256ssd), refurbished.

Had one of the worst image retentions I have ever saw - yet it didn't pass the Apple image retention test.

As you can imagine, I was kind of a ****** off.

I showed them real life behaviour of the screen and they agreed to replace it.

Got LG second gen display. No image retention now, it is not yellow and it is pretty much working as it is suppossed.

Just my 2 cents.

My 2nd Samsung screen is pretty much yellow free since I got a replacement from my 1st Samsung screen. It is definitely warmer in color than the but I have had good results using Adobe's RGB ICC's. You can download them for free at http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/adobergb.html they have it both for OSX and Windows, it has made all the colors pop and make everything look much better. Stunning visuals in bootcamp playings games. You can then calibrate it and adjust for gamma and white point and get your Samsung display to even better than the LG.

These didn't help me. :-/ Still yellow.

Merch, have you calibrated your display?

If not, did you take your rMBP to a professional photograpy shop to verify whether or not it's your display OR your perception of colour that's causing you grief?

If not, why?

I know that you've been digging in your heels about calibration because you're sure that you're 100% right and that you shouldn't have to go to this extra effort and expense for something that's Apple's fault, but...what if you're wrong? You'll never be 100% sure until you've taken the time to calibrate your display and/or compare it to a properly calibrated display using the exact same image (preferably fairly detailed with lots of different colors in it).

Once you've done this, you will either (A) have new ammo with which to march into an Apple store and demand a non-yellow replacement, or (B) learn to like your perfectly calibrated display that, although at the moment appearing yellow to your eye, will eventually look normal as time goes by.

Trust me on this.
