MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

We never had any proof that Samsung is making screen for the 13" retina. As far as we know there is only LG.

Good point! It might be interesting/useful to have owners of 13" rMBPs post what the display model # listed in the ColorSync Utility is for their computer. (Please specify whether current or previous generation if you post.) If we see more than one model # for a given generation of 13" rMBP, that won't necessarily tell us who is making the displays, but at least we will know that Apple is probably sourcing from multiple vendors for the 13" model as well.

I have a base 15" rmbp late 2013. 🙂

I was referring to your 15" quote about unable to use the terminal command, so I forgot to note the 15" base since the quote referred to non-discrete graphics 15".

Gotcha. Since you were responding to someone with a 2012 15", I didn't want to assume that you had a non-discrete 2013 15" even though the discussion had chained off of my post. 🙂 I think it's pretty clear that both LCD manufacturers have come out with new or slightly tweaked displays for this next generation of rMBP, so comparing your display's model # to a 2012 machine is apples and oranges. Whether or not the display manufacturers have actually managed to address any of the common problems from the older displays seems to still be in dispute.

I would imagine that all 2013 15" models, whether non-discrete or discrete, use the same displays. So the way to figure out what display you have is to observe what A022 maps to on a discrete 15" rMBP with that same display model, by using the command-line technique to get the actual manufacturer's model #.

Nathan,

I completely agree with you. Just waiting for one of the 2013 guys with a 15" who knows their display to chime in here and see what model number they have. 🙂

I have same problem ;( my warranty expired 2 weeks ago. what are my options? I went to geinus and they charge me 400$ for the repair 😟 macbookpro 15" mid 2012.

I travel a lot so I couldn't go to apple store earlier.

Do we know if anyone has gotten a free replacement for their image retention display past the 1 year warranty period without AppleCare?

Hey kenosecon, I hope you don't pay 400 dollars and then get another display that has other problems like yellow gradients or yellow tinting or stuck pixels or muras. Buying an Apple product is like buying a box of chocolates...

If it were me I would keep calling AppleCare. One time I was out of warranty for an issue that exited while it was in warranty. I called after it was a couple months too late and they told me if I had kept calling and left a history on the account they might have been able to do something. You need to create a persistent history of calls and complaints. I'd call AppleCare every week and eventually push to talk to a suervisor. If they see a consistent call history they *might* be willing to work with you. 2 weeks isn't long and Apple is flexible to a certain degree. They'll look at the date of the first visit and determine if they should honor a repair.

Hey everybody, because I am following this thread since March and got a lot of useful information, I feel obligated to give a short report back. The IR problems kept me from buying a new machine since the new Pros came out last year. As a computer scientist, I am basically working all day long on my computer (reading, writing, programming, ...) and, thus, I need a perfect machine.

After the launch of the Haswell Pros, I decided to replace my white Macbook. The white Macbook was 24/7 in use for 4 years and I never had any problems (thanks Apple, never had such a notebook!!). However, I was afraid of getting a machine with defective display. For my new 15" 2.3 GHz 16GB 512GB Macbook, I can state after intensive testing, that it is as perfect as my white Macbook was. The display has absolutely no IR or yellow regions. Even the pre-configured color profile looks great. Of course, I determined the manufacture of the display. Here it is:

Color LCD

LSN154YL01-A01

I think, this is a revised Samsung. It would be nice to hear from others, if their revised Samsungs are as great as mine. I am also interested, if the revised LGs are IR-free. Many friends of mine ask me which notebook to buy. If the old game, Samsung is a winner and LG a looser is still true, I cannot recommend the new Pro to my friends because likely they are not as lucky as I.

I am following this thread since I returned my mid 2012 base model retina macbook pro due to the IR defect on it's LG manufactured display.

Now, I really would like to know is that new late 2013 retina macbook pro displays IR-free or not, cause im planning on buying an late 2013 macbook retina pro if these new displays has no defects..

Any replies will be appreciated.

15" 2.3 GHz / 16GB:

LSN154YL01-A01

Manufacturer: 610

Model: A022

My first unit was also a Samsung display, but the display was hazy and had noticeably warm area in the left lower quarter. This replacement's display is very good and with calibration is exceptional.

I've looked at other Haswell 15" units purchased by friends and have anecdotally noted that the LG displays are dimmer, lower contrast and tend to natively be cooler. Uniformity issues are noticeable among the Samsung display. However, side-by-side, a good Samsung display (mine) truly outshines the best LG display I've seen.
