MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I had the 2010 13" Retina MacBook Pro which I think is the same model. It was really great with no image retention or colour problems. Could be a good choice.

Eh, you sure about that? Prety sure there was no 13" rMBP in 2010...

Yeah, I miswrote. I'm not used to writing "MacBook Pro" without the "Retina" in front. We're talking about the "Classic" MacBook Pro from 2010.

None retina MBP are fine, the sole problem with the screen is the pretty poor resolution. Forget about the 13" rmbp, most of them are still shipping with screens manufactured in 2012 (A018) and the others in early 2013 (A020). Both have IR as far as I have experienced so wait for a possible new revision without IR or get a 15" with a Samsung display :) (Justy my 2 cents advice)

There's nothing wrong with the res, yes there's now PC's with higher res, but you're oversimplifying things by suggesting lower res/PPI = worse display, there's several other metric/attributes to consider.

Once all those metrics are carefully compared/considered, one could draw the conclusion that there's 1 or more better consumer displays than the rMBP in this form-factor, but it's incorrect to suggest that no rMBP displays are good, & still very decent displays.

Perhaps you were trying to say something else, if you were apologies for my misunderstanding, it was a very brief sentence, misunderstandings can/do happen in such scenarios.

C'mon now... Really?

But does anyone know if IR and yellow tints are problem on iPads as well?

My brother his fiancee is planning to buy an iPad. I issued a warning to them suggesting they should carefully consider other options as well if IR is a problem on the iPads.

Yes, the iPads also have image retention and weird colour problems. Please see the MacRumors forums at http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=137 in the iPad category. They have a thread on there about image retention with 37,475 views and another thread on discolouration that has 26,394 views. Both are on the first page of the forum category so you can't miss them.

From a glance it seems that the problem is mostly with the iPad mini with Retina display.

Thanks I skyped the link to my brother:

I have long ago abandoned the idea to persuade someone to buy into the Apple hype.

I am stuck with OS X for other reasons though and cannot easily move on to another platform.

Apple lost the plot. If one hasn't got IR or yellow tints most likely the 13" laptop will suffer from the keyboaed freeze (my brother's 13" MBPr late 2013 froze many times); and no the software update did absolutely nothing to mitigate the problem.

And of course my 15" late 2013 LG 019 screen is far from perfect.

I'm sorry for not have bought a Dell Precision. The base model costs the price of a rMBP, but, according to reports from users, its IGZO display doesn't suffer from uneven yellowing nor image retention. I even had contact with a seller which is my relative, but I was too hurried on taking my decision. The Precision M3800 also comes with Quadro GPU. I just looked at the gross specs, e.g. Quadro K1100 x 750M or K1000 x 650M or 256GB SSD x 512GB SSD.

The specs from the Precision looked a bit more expensive than the rMBP. In truth, we pay for what we get. We usually doen't expect a PC to be more expensive than a Mac "because Macs are better quality computers", but currently this is not the case. M3800 is probably the only way of getting a quality, very portable workstation these days.

I'm definitely looking at the next go around very closely, reading dozen of different reviews, threads, & other data points (as per usual) before puling the trigger. It's entirely possible that Apple's no longer at the pinnacle this yr when it comes to ultraportable workstations, no one's at the top constantly, & that's a good thing.

The only thing that may put me off pulling the trigger, is not being able to dual-boot OSX on a PC or in a VM (or both) as elegantly as one can on a Mac. Just as I still use Windows/Other quite a bit, I would still want to use OSX quite a bit, and have a consistent/reliable experience there.

But yes, we digress... 😉 Then again, that's what this thread has really become, so we can be relaxed about that, there can be other more targeted threads e.g:

Hm, I had somehow missed the resolution point in the old MBP. It is only 1280 x 800 for a 13" display. This is what my 6-years old Macbook has. I am saying this in the sense that my needs evolved since then and I see myself rather limited in this resolution.

I just checked out the new Macbook Air. It has a more reasonable resolution at 13" than the old MBP. Are they any display issues like in the case of the rMBP? The MBA is obviously weak in the CPU department but let's focus for a moment on the display.

That's what I was saying. Personnaly I hate the Air screen, the color gammut and the viewing angles are very poor. It's a TN panel like the ones you had on notebooks and old PC before IPS. Btw they are no IR but they also use LG and Samsung and noce again the Samsung are better (more contrast even though they are still pretty bad. That's why I went for the retina but ... You know the end.
