Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Actually your wrong . You have 14 days to get a REPLACMENT for any reason u see fit no questions asked. And if y read the thread u can see there is clearly an issue with the lg screens (I've already got my replacement coming tomorrow)

You have no choice of what screen vendor you get as a replacment.   Yes its great that Apple has a no questions asked policy letting you exchange it 14 days out.   Actually they will go a bit further then 14 days, but it has to be a decent reason for exchange.   Also if you have Apple care and this is a legit concern you are covered during the duration of your warranty.

Like all forums the people who have no problems are less likely to be posting, then people who have issues that want their issue resolved.

I made a quick AppleScript-based app that will tell you if you have an LG or Samsung Retina Display.

So if you are inexperienced with Terminal, this should make your life a little eaiser!

I am another person with the issue. Additionally I have a weird dead pixels.

I've just got back from Apple Store where I've been told that "Expensive types of monitors - like the one in new MBPR, often is experiencing this problem, so it is not an issue." Also additionally I've been told that Apple is so far not acknowledging this as a problem.

I've been offered 3-5 day "repair" that "would probably come back not fixed". Since I cant wait more then 2 days ... I am stuck :|

Hopefully Apple finally will respond to this issue. Probably they are trying to avoid bad press that official statement could cause.

Apple Stores can't provide much support currently so the best bet is to talk directly with Apple Care (1-800 MYAPPLE). Tell them about the retention issue, take a picture of it and show the representatives if possble. They should give you a replacement.

Aside from spending a huge price premium for a flawed product, I do visual design as part of my work.

Scrolling through a dark-themed app with light text is absolutely infuriating.

Thanks for collecting the data on this.  Here's my history:

Week 28:  LG with noticeable IR.

    returned within 14 days

Week 33:  LG with no IR (tested thoroughly)

Was bummed to get an LG twice, but the new one is quite nice.  FWIW, I tested 3 display models in the Apple Store at Grand Central in NYC and all 3 were Samsung.

Of course! Grand Central is their most high profile location, no way they are going to put second rate screens there.  Very curious about the contrast, brightness, and color comparison as well

So you are in the category of people for whom this is a serious issue.  I recommend getting a replacement.

    ehntoo, I completely agree!

Something that non-graphic designers don't seem to understand about this problem is that it makes the laptop completely unusable for any type of professional graphics work. You can't trust what you see on the screen when performing edits on either photos or line art. To make matters even worse, Apple touts the Retina display as being the signature feature of this laptop so they are implying that the screen is in some way an improvement over previous generations of Apple laptops, but in fact it's not for anyone doing serious graphic design work. Maybe Apple should have left off the "Pro" in the name....

The really sad thing is that in order to do any design work I have resorted to plugging the laptop into an older 27" iMac just so I can be sure that I am not seeing distored images. :-(

Unfortunately I noticed this problem just past my 14 day return period so I will likely have to plead my case at the local Apple store and hope they do the right thing and just replace the unit with a more recently manufactured one (with a Samsung or corrected LG display). This will be my second visit over this issue, round one got me nowhere and I was advised to "come back in a week if it does not go away on it's own").

At least I resisted the urge to purchase a custom build and have just the standard base model so wish me luck.

Just got back from the apple store. I went to the one in Americana, same firmware BS, but at least the guys was a lot nicer compared to the one in the Grove. Going to try the on in Glendale tomorrow. Funny thing is that the guy at the bar in Americana also recently ordered an rMBP himself, and after talking to him, he seems to fear the IR issue more than i do. In all honesty i do hope he gets one with IR, so he could stop with the firmware BS and understand our pain.

If these details are still being collected:

My rMBP with the Image Retention flaw has an LG panel and appleserialnumberinfo.com says that it was Build Week 1 (January) or week 28 (July).  Also it says it was unit number 1159 to be built that week.

Hey stecube, you can add LG week 25 to the faulty ones. Just need 2 minutes on power or battery to show the IR.

Thanks for keeping the list updated!

I called and tried to get a replacement, but it's past my 14 days. They told me I could send it in for repair. I declined, I am going to wait for now. I cant be without a computer right now.
