Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I shared my ghosting experience on Macrumors, but I do have an update I wanted to share as I just received my replacement retina.

Just to give an update and make a long story short, I ended up speaking with someone higher up in Apples Executive support team and just received my replacement today.

The display appears to be much better, I can notice the very faintest "ghosting" after amount 15 minutes of a static website on a dark gray background. It's too hard to photograph and I do not see it on the dashboard which was my main issue before.

What do you guys think? I'm starting to believe that under the right conditions and the right image/website you can probably see a little image retention on any retina screen. It's just nobody really notices it, or looks that close.

Would love to hear your opinions and if you think I should send mine in for a second time.

That sounds more like the normal image retention you can expect on any LCD screen, particularly early in its life.  I don't think its much to worry about.

My new screen is basically flawless, though I haven't done any tests for more than 5-10 minutes.  I'm not really looking for a problem.  The old display was clearly defective and the problem was noticible with light/general use (30 seconds).

How do you find out what week they were made?

So after receiving my second retina, here are some images I tried to take displaying the ghosting. Was hoping to see if you guys think this is normal/acceptable due to the IPS display, or if I should call Apple again and ask for another one.

The website I left on the screen was, http://flightaware.com. You can see from the images some of the outlines of the "grid" layout from the website.

Bumped up contrast so it is easier to see "ghosting"

Dave, the issue my display has is similar. I have never noticed it until today. I left a chat window open for about 30 minutes while I was watching TV and then I opened a Safari window and navigated to a page that happens to have a dark background (daringfireball.net). I actually thought it was a CSS trick he was testing out (transparent background, etc) but after some digging it turns out it is in fact this ghosting issue. Maybe mine is worse than yours. Should I be going to the Apple store for a replacement?

FYI I ordered mine the day of the keynote, so this is one of the first batches. Maybe a dud? Anyone have any ideas?

This looks like it may be normal.  Do you notice it covering the whole screen?  How long did you let the image sit?

As I've said a few times before, my busted screen had an area of extreme image retention that would appear after 30 seconds.  It also caused the area of the screen to be lighter.  It was a blob near the bottom of the screen to the right.

It covers the whole screen on mine. The image sat for about 30 min, maybe less. I've noticed it almost fades/flickers on within a second of putting a dark background over it.

Nothing about this problem is normal! Do not get used to it or try to make a solution. They offer you a replacement right away. Use it. Go to store and get another one.

well, there's "the problem" and then there's not "the problem" 

30 minutes of a static screen leaving very temporary and subtle retention is not unusual.

edit:  that being said, if you are within you 14 days and unhappy, return the thing!

It's not usual either. I haven't seen it in any of my Windows laptops (HP and DELL) and haven't seen this with my MBP late 2011 too either. You go to the store, tell them you have this thing(not problem maybe), let them decide whether it's usual or unusual. I'm sure they will say you have to get another one.

But yet if you are happy with what you have or tired of waiting for it and you don't want to wait again for weeks (I've been, I'm with you on this it s.u.c.k.s) then it's OK.

that's a rumor--there will be no 17" rMBP, not only are they not making a 17" retina, they've discontinued the 17" MBP regular.

On the other hand, Apple has been known to be quite unpredictable at times.  Saying 'no no, that'll never happen', then bam...it happens
