Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

PLS is a slightly different technology then IPS and seems to manage fast motion quite well.  I have the samsung 850 which is a 27 PLS and it is a fabulous monitor.

Is that a different part number from LG vs. some of the earlier LG part numbers?

I am not sure. Look for laptops with ML Preinstalled i think they are good. Because i bought my first laptop on monday and it had Lion. Just yesterday  i came to the same store asked for another one and got one newer with ML preisntalled.

I think it even works faster overall.. but i may be wrong.

I would be very (happily) surprised to see a new model number from LG in response to this issue

I think you are correct. I have the LG screen with the same part number and ALSO with ML preinstalled. All other rMPR had Lion on them. So far no IR issues. Might be a fixed model.

    @Fiercy2.

I jumped back to this thread because I noticed LP154WT1-SJA1

I have that same model screen. In normal use it has no noticeable IR. But do that checkerboard test for 20 minutes and it has IR. Might be faint and dissapear quickly but its definitely there.

Hey my Custom rMBP was shipped on 1st aug and I will be seeing it for the first time tomorrow as I have been away.

This discussion is getting huge and its the first time that I have seen I and my heart has sunk a little!

From what I can see from going through the 75+ pages ! the LG may have problems that could manifest in different ways and extents. But the Samsung seem to be good to go?

How do i tell whether it is an LG or Samsung screen?

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but i really cant find the answer easily!

    Cheers

    K*

    Open Terminal, copy & paste:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

    and then press Enter.

LG starts with LP, Samsung starts with LSN

Here's a simple app that will tell you if you have an LG or Samsung Display.

    HEY APPLE.

How about pulling your finger out. You guys are looking more like Microsoft everyday.

We've witnessed 3 different manufactures of panels in this thread alone. Samsung, LG, AUO ( I think it was right?). Any who commented on the AUO screens said universally they were garbage.

Those commenting on LG screens a majority (greater than 50%) have claimed they have issues (but having said that this is a IR complain thread).

So where are the hordes of Samsung panel guys complaining?

I can't believe you are sticking LG screens that aren't as good as Samsung's in what appears to be the majority of your computers. If anything it would be SMART business sense to have those that complained of IR targeted in the system and ensured they are sent a Samsung screen.

That way those that are more prone to noticing stuff like us are happy and those that won't notice won't care.

I also spoke to a Applecare guy somewhere in Asia today and asked him if he was aware there were 3 different screen manufacturers and that this was a problem for some. Usual company line.

I could tell it was rehearsed as when I got specific regards certain things he answered with general stuff like "Manufacturers in Asia" "Warehousing in Asia"

You mean SHenzhen and then Shanghai yes? "Our warehouses in Asia"

Not quite sure why all the secrets on that one lol.

So Apple needs a very large quanity of 2880 x 1800 displays to keep up with demand and you think utilization of multiple suppliers is like Microsoft?

Yeah I do. Apple is not some rebel / nice big brother company anymore. They are just as money grubbing as intimidating as microsoft ever was.

Just the cultists and the memory of what apple was (some time ago I might add) keeps that old dead image alive.

Actually computers are cheaper then they use to be.  Wasn't uncommon to spend $5000 on a Apple computer setup not too long ago.  Now they push the edge of what can be done.  Retina displays are very rapidly taking over the marketplace, be it phones, tablets and now laptops.  So Apple is not a rebel by going out on a limb to see if people will want these products?
