Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Hey all! Wow this has become a huge thread!

Three questions that I have seen threads to but can't quite understand

    1) what does 'IR' actually Stand for?

    2) what and how does one do the checkerboard test

    3) can anyone find that list of weeks that lg and Samsung batches were faulty?

Thanks in advance and sorry to ask. These forums are extraordinarily hard to search and navigate through!

The reality is this: a lot of customers are not going to notice this, because they don't know what to look for. If we (the subscribers to this thread and others on the subject) are placated, this will all die down and a lot of people will happily continue using their crummy LG-display-carrying rMBPs in blissful ignorance. However, if this issue starts getting more press in the wider media, a whole bunch of people are going to start checking their machines and complaining, and Apple will have an even larger, more expensive problem on their hands. Nip it in the bud now Apple, if only for the sake of your bottom-line.

    Regards,

    Peter

Indeed, what do you suggest to have more users knowing about these problems?

    1. Ir stands for image retention

    2. Set your background for the darkest grey of the solid colours available in settings. Put a picture on display (can be a webpage like google search or anything with range of text and colour, or use black and white checkerboard), leave picture up for 5-15 mins, then minimise it, see if you can still see the text / checker on the grey background.

    3. From what I have seen on this forum, Apple are using mixed manufacturers in all weeks, so you can't guarantee whether you get LG or Samsung for any week. Most LG ones seem to have the problem right away, or in first few weeks no matter what week they are from even including week 32/33 which are the latest ones off the line.

Find out your display manufacturer: Open Terminal, copy & paste:

    ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

and then press Enter. If the result starts with LP it's an LG, if it starts with LSN it's a Samsung.

If this doesn't help you I have no idea what it is you are asking for.

I didn't buy it too. I'll wait untill something official will be posted by Apple.

I'd really like to see if they're as good in admitting errors as they're in having public events or in making videos full of frippery.

I don't think you can. The serial number doesn't tell you that, just the build week and other specs.

Unfortunately you cannot know before you buy! Even Apple appear to have no way of

telling whether they have shipped you a Samsung or LG panel.

    Hope this helps, John.

That's currently not possible since the only known way to determine the manufacturer is to run the terminal command mentinoed previously, and in order to run that command, you just have the computer in your hands.

There's no known way to check the LCD manufacturer using the Serial Number, but you can determine the date of production using the Serial Number (so the two pieces of information are needed before you can say "I have an XXX display from a rMBP produced Week YY").

That's why we're all calling it a "lottery".

I have a question about the Week though... mine says either Week 6 or 33. It only arrived today and this is week 33, it was dispatched last week! So how can it be week 33?! But surely it's not week 6 either? Confused!

    And for the record:

    LP154WT1-SJA1 so LG from Week 6 or 33 (?)

Arrived today. Testing it for IR as we speak but so far I think it's ok (or at least very slight).... BUT even when I first turned it on I was immediately struck by how YELLOW the screen colour is. I've got my PC next to it and the difference is unbelievable. Can this simply be corrected by fiddling with the colour settings? I'm in 2 minds over what to do. If some people are getting good samsung screens then it is royally unfair on the rest of us, and we all paid a small fortune for this luxury. If I'd seen this post before ordering I would have waited. Now I'm tempted to get a refund and order again in a couple of months.

Oh and I'm in the UK. Took 2 weeks from order to arrival.

I guess it partly depends on which day it was shipped and which day they consider the start of the week, but either way, it's from week 32/33 timeframe, so I wouldn't worry about being off +/- 1 week since it really has not impact on anything and the information beging logged in this thread is just to get attempt to find overall patterns to the problems.

So, this ghosting issue appears only on dark grey background not on blue or green?

I must admit, grey is not my favorite color, and if it's not visible on blue how big of an issue is it ?

Also, how can we all blame Apple for bad pannels if they appear to be third party manufactured.

Apple invents new technologies, and they will sort it out, eventually. If it wasn't for Apple we would still use Motorola shoe phone. So are they really that bad?

For those who did not purchased retina MBP, you are missing out on a great trip, go get it, it's great product.
