Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

You should test your screen with some calibration hardware or compare to a pro calibrated monitor, the screen is supposed to look a bit warmer when calibrated. i also have noted that the LG screen is closer to Gamma 2.2 out of the box than the Samsung. Samsung looks more close to the 1.8 gamma, eventhough it says 2.2.

Vic, IR usually shows on darker gray backgound, you can't see it on brighter backgrounds but it may annoy some when dealing with photographs if the problem is huge. It has not been a problem to me so far and I can't replicate the IR problem when in "Recovery Mode", so there could be hope for a software update...

    vic_seadog,

    1) dont forget that most visual construction programs use dark grey backgrounds. Autodesk Maya, Adobe photoshop, just to name a few. Imagine spending 30 minutes touching up a photo, then switching to your next photo just to realize that you can still see the previous photo?

    2) Apple didnt invent this resolution. It existed before, apple just put it in their devices and coined it 'retina'. Also, IPS technology existed way before Apple used it and marketed it.

    3) Apple takes the third party panels and inserts them into their displays. There is a process during assembly called "QC" where all the parts are tested (supposedly thoroughly). it is apples responsibility to test these 3rd party products sufficiently before deeming it perfect and shipping it to us, the consumers.

    Hope that answers your questions

This is my second retina, I did noticed retention issue on my previous screen while in Mail, it lasted for few seconds and it went away, I casually play with photography as well, however since I found out of this issue I'm constantly testing, changing backgrounds, man I hope this is not going to affect my health, eyes strain, ocd or affection to chess.

And if it does, who would be liable LG or Apple?

My new machine appears to be build in 28th week and of course it's LG. Keep my fingers crossed.

I just have few seven questions

    1) does the ghosting go away after a screensaver or is it pernamint

    2) will apple send Samsung panels in the newer weeks of MBPR

    3) will apple continue on these bad quality panels normally on

    4) are there other issues with the retina… apart from the burn in

    5) will apple seed an update for the osx to take advantage of the full retina reseloution other than 16.xx X … (I don't know the current reseloution exactly

    6) are there other horrible issues in the screen like burnet out dead pixels (a lot)

    7) AND DO APPLE HEAR US FROM THE FIRST PLACE)

    1) it should go away with time

    2) nobody knows

    3) nobody knows

    4) yes there are a few - some have reported fragmenting issues with their video cards. Do a google search.

    5) nobody knows

    6) yes some have reported dead pixel clusters, backlight bleed and uneven coloring

    7) they definitely hear us but are acting like they don't

    1) does the ghosting go away after a screensaver or is it pernamint

Not permanent. For most people it seems to go away after 5 - 15 mins

    2) will apple send Samsung panels in the newer weeks of MBPR

So far, they are still using panels from Samsung, LG and a third manufacturer has show up recently (AU?)

    3) will apple continue on these bad quality panels normally on

    ???

    4) are there other issues with the retina… apart from the burn in

I and some others have had panels with a "white spot" (some called it a "mura" I think) about 2mm around that got brighter the brigher that area of the screen was (invisible on a black background and very bright on a white background). That alone might get you a replacement I think.

    5) will apple seed an update for the osx to take advantage of the full retina reseloution other than 16.xx X … (I don't know the current reseloution exactly

Who knows, but based on seeing Windows at the max resolution, I'm not sure you'd really want to use it since it makes things VERY small.

    6) are there other horrible issues in the screen like burnet out dead pixels (a lot)

A few people have had some dead pixels, but no more than any other screen type I think (and actually surprisingly few reports that I'm aware of given how many pixels are in the retinal screen)

    7) AND DO APPLE HEAR US FROM THE FIRST PLACE)

    If we're lucky.

    Vertigro,

I work professionally with photos and videos, and while IR MAY be an issue if strong enough, i haven't had any problems till now. Eventhough Lightroom, Photoshop, FFX and many others have gray backgrounds (that can be switched to light gray or other variation) the photo or image itself is not gray and usually a change of photographs forces the screen to refresh. This issue actually MAY become a problem when editing the same photo, since you may not notice subtle changes in contrast or even color (but I truly doubt this can be perceived, has anyone?). But I haven't noticed this so far and I am not defending the LG screen, since I have many other screens here, but I believe it is important to describe the problem in a precise a sound way.

The LG screen also seems more close to perfect calibration out of the box. In mine I actually noticed a very very light pink tint that is easily corrected by calibration.

Has anybody else calibrated the LG and samsung screen using a pro hardware like Spyder?

I think the problem isn't only LG screen, but something about energy consumption.

We know that IR issuses is due by not correct polarization of liquid Crystal in pixel/sub pixel; so that would can due by uncoreclty energy suplier in the screen; maybe Samsung have different consumption.

I only suppose that, the battery and energy supplier is not all equal, due by tollerante, and in the same way the LG display. So more lucky people can't note IR and other yes. For example me, in first time LG week 32 i note IR after 20-30 mins, and this wasn't strong; the second, another LG week 33, have bad IR only after 10 mins.

In the first laptop i has some difficult to reproduce IR in recovery mode. The laptop was more hotter then second.

Some people start to see the IR only after install ML, other note  some difference when is on battery or Plugged in ecc.

Whit this word i would to say who maybe They can resolve the issuse without difference about type of display, LG or Samsung.

For now the only way to stay relax without IR is hope for Samsung display.

Please let me know if someone has a perfect Samsung pannel MacBook Pro retina and if so does the serial number of your machine start with "C02"

    Sfasciacarene,

That is exactly my point. It seems there is a energy problem, I also can't replicate the IR retention under "Recovery Mode".Also, Sansung may not show the IR retention so much because it blows up the brightness, and gets more energy. If you leave a white window on your display while on 50% (or the checkboard JPEG) for a while (15 minutes or how long you want) and then increase the brightness to max you probably won't notice much IR after a few seconds, I didn't.

Mine starts with C02 as well, and also has (a very yellow) LG screen, sorry! Week 33, arrived today.
