Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

i wish to add to this.

Never buy ANY electronic thing from Best Buy that's more than say..$100.

But to keep it in topic:

I ordered my rMBP (w/ the 16gb ram option) on June 22nd and it's still on processing, and I'm hoping--after reading about this ghosting issue--that since mine is either not built yet or is currently being built, that it will be past the 'ghost era' and will be free of this problem; I don't think i could wait another month for a replacement

My rMBP (16GB RAM and 512GB SSD) has this issue as well built in week 26 (June). I noticed it while working in Illustrator CS6. CS6 uses a dark gray area around the artboard unlike previous versions. When I went to move the artboard, a very prominent ghost of the artboard and illustration was clearly still visible in the original location. Not good for designers that spend all day in Illustrator.

Made an appointment to discuss the issue tomorrow. Still have a few days before my 14 day period is up.

Well, just got back from the Apple store... Their reponse is the image persistance is normal?!?!? I was told the solution is to put up a plain white screensaver whenever it is bothersome.

No offer to exchange so I am just going to return it for a refund since I am within my 14 days.

If that's normal then so is a refund.  This is exactly why I hate the genius bar.

    1) Noticed this issue on mine (built week 24).

    2) Seen that it's not a sporadic issue, according to this thread and other ones on the net.

    3) Understood that it could quickly become a very bad plan if Apple suddenly decides that it's not a "real problem" (like the monkey you met at Genius Bar).

    4) And the 12th day, I saw that this was not good. Asked for a refund. Back using my old MBP.

    5) Will wait for the next revision of MPB Retina, and comments about its screen

Sometimes people at Apple Store say sth not right! Acting crazy. Just call Apple and let them know you have some problems with your machine. They will assist you in the best way.

You will replace it even if you have to return it for full refund and order a new one. I'm sure you don't need to because the problem is normal too and they know it.

Just call Apple, they've been replacing machines with this issue then it's not normal.

Please keep us posted with your latest update, thanks.

Go read a post i have made earlier in the thread. At my first attempt the Genius told me he could not to anything. Second time, I called instead of going to the store and I was able to get a replacement the same day. The ghosting is NOT normal and the staff at my Apple admitted the fact in the end. Get yours replaced as well.

But I don't want to get myself into something I have to use my time to. We pay fair amount of money to get good products that save our time. If we need to use our time to negotiate with a salesperson that's neither what we wanted to buy at Apple store nor what we expected from it. Leave these things to discount shop.

Well stuff like this happens all the time. There is no need to negotiate or convince anybody. You will replace it easily or you could just return it for full refund. (And who you think a Genius is a real genius?! Most of the time they are just a guy )

Don't be mad and go get a replacement or refund it for a good.

    Best luck

A little off topic, but related... I just got a 11 inch MBA to replace my 13 inch MBA as my road machine.  The 11 inch has a yellowish screen compared to the brilliant display on my 13 inch.  really disapointed, it seems that Apple has so many different suppliers for their screens it's hard to control the consistancy of the products.  Of course, Apple support is still amazing and they are going to replace the computer for me.  I feel bad to have to exchange it, but in the end I guess thats the business choice Apple has to make to keep up with the demand.  Just hope the next one has a normal screen...

I have a June (week 24) that I received a week after it was released.  I set a black background and didn't think I had the ghosting problem. Last night I tried a dark gray background and left this forum up for a few minutes.  When I removed the safari browser, I could see the comments and the outlines of the comment boxes.  I hope Apple doesn't follow the footsteps of other computer companies that WERE known for great quality.

I'll be calling apple later today.

Just noticed i am getting this ghosting issue as well, i called up Apple and they want to take it for repair...

How can it be repaired when they still cant meet demand for these?! I have 2 edit deadlines coming up but cant have my 2k laptop thats barely two weeks old breaking on me.

They wont even provide a loaner till its repaired, not good enough! This fault could cost me clients! Should i be going to a store and demanding a replacement rather than being left machineless for easily 5 plus working days? Whats Apples line on this? For the kind of moneythe retina costs i am not happy at all!
