Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

hi i just thought i would (kindly) mention that the command to check display mfg'er on that http://m.tuaw.com page is not correct, you need to use html entities for the left angle brackets (<) or it gets cut off. At least I assume that's the problem. well, if whoever put it up is still watching this thread at least, otherwise, i guess posting that here won't do much good.

I believe that the C02 just indicates the factory at which it was built.  In any case, all the MBA 2012s that I've seen all have a serial number starting with C02.  Three LGs and three Samsungs.

I do not think that the serial number gives any clue as to the brand of screen in an rMBP or an MBA.

I have received my new mac (2.3/8/256) yesterday and its and LSN Samsung screen. I am very happy with it. No dead pixels or something else. And yes my serial number starts also with C02.

But my keyboard is bit weak. Dont know if its normal cause it is my first macbook.

Io non credo, i dont believe that all LG have IR,but a small precentual. Since Apple meight have selled millions of MBPR and most are LG and not SAMSUNG and maybe 200 or more people noticed IR, and many others have no IR with LG, so its right to say, calm down, everything will be right

Last night was the first that i had to use my rMBP

It is a custom build 16/2.7/512 and my heart sank when i went to the terminal to find it was a LG screen

    LP154WT1-SJA1

I have done the checkerboard test though and cannot see any traces of IR

should i carry on checking to hope they "fail"

    Cheers

And after a few tests it seems this display is not even a 8-bit display, just a 6-bit with bad color banding issues. It looks really bad...

With regards to your original post, with the picture, I spent some time looking closely at a white window over the dark grey background.  There is definitely a halo of banding surrounding the window on my LG panel.  It's pretty clear that the gradual fade of shadow around the window has banding.  But I don't know if the panel is to blame or if the rendering of the shadow is banded during the render (i.e. they don't use a very smooth shadow effect).  I don't have any other Macbook to compare against and this is my first Mac so I don't know if that's normal or if it is an artifact of the panel, or if it has something to do with the way that the scaling to 1920x1200 is being done.   But it's definitely noticeable on close inspection, whatever the cause.

    EDIT:

At the lowest resolution setting (1024x640) the banding is very, very obvious because the bands are so wide.

If anyone is new to this discussion and do not want to read the overwhelming number previous posts, I've constructed a webpage.

It will summarize the issue, determine if you have the issue, and give you solution methods.

    http://www.cyneticsoft.com/mbpretina

And for others, I'm soon going to be collecting data so I can do some analysis on this matter.

It will be on the same webpage. I'll update you when it is available for submitting info.

    Cheers!

    Excellent point!

Hopefully, most people here have enough common sense to calibrate their monitors.

Screen brightness is such a subjective thing unless you measure it.

Personally, I have my screen brightness set at about 80% of max when it's on battery power only. If my computer is powered, I turn the brightness all the way up.

Do you know if the middle east (Dubai, UAE) can replace my rmbp with a new one or repar it with apple care like you guys have in the US/CA and Europe?

There's one thing not clear: when you return a rMBP within the 14 days, should you pay the mail or does Apple pay for it too?
