Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Well I just got off the phone with someone from Corporate Executive Relations and I was told that my LG screen that gets IR in 5 minutes is within specification. I tried to tell him that I had seen the Samsung display and it did not experience these problems and he still told me that even if i sent it in for repair that they would not change the display since it is within specification. He suggested that I purchase the extended AppleCare just incase it became worse to the point were it is out of specification later on.

Well my first replacement arrives tomorrow. If this has the same problem (or those some of you have had with dust or dead pixels etc), I will return it and ask for a refund.

I am seeing far too many here getting multiple bad replacements, I am not willing to waste my time if Apple can't even be bothered to do a bit of extra inspection on replacements before they are shipped out to ensure the issue raised is not repeated.

Sad, I thought Aplle rated quality above everything (and was how they justified their high prices compared to similar specced competing products)

What a joke! This is complete BS. I am getting more and more angry about this. How is it fair that some people are getting samsung screens, and the rest of us have to go throw all this crap. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased for those who have managed to win the "lottery" and get the screen they deserve, but this lack of QC and consistency is simply shocking. APPLE SORT THIS MESS OUT!!!

What country are you in ? This seems a different response to that many of us have had (I am uk and it took all of 5 minutes for them to agree and arrange a replacement)

Worrying that Apple may be about to start to defend a sub-standard performance.

Definately means making your decision within the 14 Day, no questions, return period more critical, as they have to accept it back no matter what in that period.

But could mean if it is after 14 days, even your AppleCare would be no use to rectify it :(, even though you have a product that performs noticeably worse than the same product supplied to others for the same price.

I'm in the US. Unfortunately I was outside of the 14 day period when I noticed the issue. The first time I talked to someone I had no issue sending it in for a repair but they only changed the logic board. I called again and sent it in a second time and after holding it for 3 days they decided they were not going to do anything and shipped it back.

I would try taking it to an apple store if I were you. My first one had bad burn in problems (under 5 minutes) like yours and they replaced it even though it was outside the 14 day grace period.

I can start to see it in under 3 minutes. This whole experience has turned me from someone who used to go out at 4am to line up for each iphone launch and other products to someone who isn't sure if he'll purchase another apple product again.

Hi Emcelly, Just a heads up that even if you buy a MacBook Pro or Air, you have the chance of ending up with an LG, Samsung, or AUO LCD.  Unfortunately, the AUO has a very yellow and dull display, while the washed out colors and low contrast seem to be standard on the LG.  I own another MacBook Air with a Samsung screen and frankly, its very hard to go from the Samsung down to the LG.  I'm about to get my 4th MBA (3rd replacement)...hopefully it has a Samsung screen.  Good Luck

I have a problem with people generalizing conditions related to a particular vendor panels as all inclusive, meaning every panel is defective.  I have a LG panel which has excellent color, high contrast/blacks, high brightness, no yellowing, no stuck/dead pixals, and unless tested in a certain way, not decernable IR.     Your statement about washed out colors and low contrast being true of LG displays doesn't fly.

For the record, my LG display also has great colors, no yellowness, no dead pixels, great contrast, etc.  The *only* deficiency in my display is the image retention, and for my uses, it's fairly minor.  But I will still ask for a replacement eventually (after giving Apple some time to sort this out) because I don't believe this level of image retention is normal or should be accepted.

Depending on the method used, it just might be true.  Its possible that people without a real issue are creating  numerous headaches for Apple and they want more proof then your word that you received a panel that has a issue, rather then something that is not visable during normal usage.

after 3 minutes i can start to see it not just on the dark gray background but on most backgrounds and depending on the site such as apple's own website, i can pick up on it on the gray buttons across the top of the site.

Are you at a location where a store is accessable, because something that obvious would be a no-brainer to correct.   BTW the 14 day return is not absolute.

I see nothing like that on the two MBPr I had, the first being exchanged because I wanted a different configuration.

Just incase you think everyone on this thread has OCD or is crazy, this is what my first rMBP looked like after 5 - 10 minutes.

I've spent the last two days dealing with Apple ER, and i have to commend them in how they have finally stepped up and dealt with this issue for me as i was getting nowhere with store representatives or Apple Care. I am currently on my third LG rMBP with severe IR (it has actually got worse over the last two days), i am now being shipped a fourth as an advanced replacement. They have also upgraded me to a 2.6/16/512 from a BTO 2.3 because of the continued inconvenience. Good, but i still think they are happily igorning the obvious QC problem here.

ER could not guarantee a samsung panel in this new replacement however, and so if this fourth replacement suffers from severe IR as the previous three have, i am not sure what i'll do.

IR free, i still have no confidence in LG retina panels as even when calibrated they are not true IMO. At least the ER i have dealt with has now taken ownership of my issue and committed themselves to ensuring i receive the product i bought, fit for purpose as advertised - which of course the kind of IR i have had has meant it isn't.

Anyway hoping for a Samsung and an end of this saga. Will update when it gets here.

Would it be possible for you to pass along your Apple ER contact number to me as the one I dealt with was of no help at all. I am curious as to whether or not a different one would be of more help.
