Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

It's not like we are comparing Apples to Apples with one being retina and one not, but at the same time it's a shame to see the variation. Colors should be accurate and at least similar to each other.  Why some screens have one tint while others have a different one looses me.  Apple should demand the same tint from all their manufacturers so at least they can have some uniformity in their product line.

I went to local Apple Premium Reseller here in Denpasar (Bali, Indonesia). I was going to get the rMBP, I read about the IR problem before so I did some tests on the rMBP on display there. The LCD is made by LG and has IR problem. Changed the background to solid dark gray, opened the safari. After a few minutes, less than 5 minutes when I minimized the safari window I can see a faint image. Ask the sales, how to get the rMBP with a samsung LCD, she said I can't, had to order a custom made rMBP and it will cost 2x the non custom order one. I said *** and left the store straight away.

I should get my replacement today. Hope for a Sammy display! My current LG screen is gorgeous, but i got heavy IR after less than 5 minutes :/ not only on grey background but also visible on blueish colors, like if you connect an external monitor to your mac.

And btw, i am from germany and i got mine longer than 2 weeks.

    Hello,

Yesterday I ordered my rMBP (2.3/16/256) but that was before I read this problem.. I was okay with the fact that you can't upgrade it, the battery is glued on and other things... But now I'm afraid that I will get a LG screen.

Did anyone get a rMBP in the past week without IR or yellow tints but with an LG screen?

    Thanks in advance.

Its very possible that it's not a week by week issue.  These parts are made in large quantities 6 months or more in advance.  It's a massive supply chain.  There has been amazing work on the thread to try to nail this down to a certain week, but it's possibly gonna drag on till a new generation of parts is made that hopefully resolve this.

Of course, this is just one possibility and only Apple engineers know better or maybe they dont :O Maybe it's an issue that gets resolved via some "fix" from Apple and or maybe LG and Samsung can identify the variable that is causing the issue and they fix it on the panel with the same part number.

It can be so many ways that this gets resolved.  Just be prepared for anything if you buy first right now.

Does anyone know if Apple Store/Genius Bar will order a replacement for you if you purchased the MBPr from a reseller (like PowerMax)?

Apple will repair it under warranty, but will not replace the whole unit straight up as you bought it from a reseller. Go to the reseller, show them the fault, tell them it was clearly defective at the point of sale, is not fit for the pupose as advertised and ask for a replacement. Good luck!

Got my first rMBP two weeks ago in Germany, LG Display and a massive IR problem.

Apple Care told me the IR is within specifications and they will not replace the Mac. Then, I went to a Genius Bar, they told me they would change the display, they are aware about the issue, but no guarantee that it will be a Samsung. But I was within the 14 days, so I just ordered a new one to gamble the game. Luckily it arrived today, with a Samsung display. No issue! Great Display, great maschine!

Well just got my replacement and its a Samsung   (Week 33)

So far, no damage, no stuck or dead pixels and I am going to run the checkerboard test now

One point though, many have said that the Samsung is brighter etc, I haven't got them side by side as I had to retung my LG, but looking at it now, I don't notice any discernable difference in how nice the picture is or the 'whiteness' of the white. Both looked equally good to me.

Congratulations! There seems to be a complete lack of consistency in the colour of LG screens - I am sure some of them don't have yellow tint problems. Mine is borderline - I guess if I compared it to a Samsung it may not look too bad, but now it's developed IR (after 6 days, now happens in 5 minutes!) so it's going back anyway.

Fingers crossed for a Samsung for my reorder!

did you ordered from Apple Store online? When you returned your rMBP, did you pay the courier?

Well 10 minute test (I lack patience at the moment for more LOL) has shown NO persistence of the image whatsoever on the Samsung (which on the previous LG one was clearly visible after 5 minutes).

Very pleased so far. I will try a 30 minute test later for interest, but I am happy at this moment.

One addition, I said that the LG and Samsung didn't look signifucantly different, but to do the test I turned off the auto brightness so I could set it to maximum.  Wow this screen is bright....the white is blinding. So while I said the screen colour quality were the same to my eyes, this one definately can go a lot brighter than the LG one I had.

Oh, and another issue I disliked with my last one was the new Magsafe power lead was always falling out (even when gently moving the laptop).  I know a lot have complained about that in the new design. This one seems much better seated (deeper) and as secure as my early 2011 MacBook pro one was Perhaps they are doing some tweaking in Shanghai from feedback they are receiving.
