Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Not the Apple Store, another retailer here. The genuis guy told me that they would change the display within 3-5 days, only because it was not baught from Apple direct, otherwise it would only take 24 hours to get it "fixed" (with no guarantee). So I did the send back, order new and hope for the best game.

I got my replacement Retina today.

Turns out IR on this one is much worse than the last one. I don't even need a checkerboard or special testing. Just moved a Desktop icon to trash and for the next 10 minutes I could still see the ghost of the icon on the display. I was not looking for it, it was bad enough to notice very easily.

Additionally, on a gray background, a pair of horizontal lines start from 1/3 from the bottom of the screen and go from right edge to the left edge, fading as they get closer to left.

The other interesting "feature" of this LG Retina display is a half-inch column on the right edge with a darker color than the rest of the screen. This is visible on a wider color range.

The lines and the column are not IR. They seem more like an actual permanent burn in.

Lastly a scratch/discoloration next to trackpad and you got Apple QA figured. Wish QA did as good of a job as their Customer Support does.

I received an LG screen yesterday.  No image retention, colors seem fine, whites appear white (three independent responses).  This is my second LG display; the first LG display was fine when I returned it as well.

I will also say that I am skeptical of some of the claims of people saying they got computers (especially 4 or 5 of them) that displayed image retention in the first 5 min of use.  I've now received two with no image retention after 15-30 min.  I think some people may have gotten one bad LG and now condemn them upon arrival.  I myself got caught up in this with my second computer (first was returned for scratch and creaky case).  However, some people have provided photographic evidence of an obvious image retention problem.  Perhaps those who are receiving bad screens are not ordering BTO configurations and they are getting computers that were manufactured a while ago with a bad batch of LG displays.  My computer is 2.7/16/768.  Also, terminal reads:

    Color LCD

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN230705T9DMJ0AE

Has anyone seen any consistency with LG screen performance and model number?  Both of the working ones I received wer LP154WT1-SJA1.

Also, does this sound like it could be a firmware issue?  I've seen numerous posts of people saying they cannot replicate the issue while in the recovery partition.

I just received my replacement mbp BTO today.  It is an LG screen.  I did the image retention test and it's clearly there just as the first unit.  I don't care.  I'll keep returning and rebuying until I get a screen that does not do this or when Apple tells me I am not allowed to buy from them again.  In the meanwhile I keep enjoying a brand new laptop for 14 days every 2 weeks.

Hi retinafan - ironic name considering the current situation!

Can I ask how many you've had now? Are you returning them each time and placing a new separate order, or asking for a replacement each time? So I guess Apple have 2 lots of your money at any one time... do you know how quickly refunds tend to go through? I have my first one rescheduled for return next week and I am thinking of re-ordering separately. I didn't ask for a replacement because I am still in my 14 days and don't want to end up getting into the situation some seem to be in now, whereby they are being told their IR issues are supposedly "within specification" and they can't have another.

Really don't see that much discussion online against IR when using google search.  The macrumors thread is only 75 posts.  This thread is very lenghty due to much discussion, but count the number of people posting that actually have problems and it statisticaly very small number against total sales.   Obvisously there are bad panels and they are being exchanged and we are all learning from one anothers problem and resolutions

I ordered mine on day 1 and had to escalate to get an advanced replacement. My new laptop is sitting at FedEx right now and if it's an LG, I'm returning it with my old one and I'm done for awhile. I have already wasted too much time on this issue. As a fan and shareholder of Apple for many years, I hope they get this issue resolved soon.

My second arrived today, my first is going back today and my 3rd is now ordered.  Apples_8212, I share those same concerns.  For this amount of money we shouldn't settle for anything less when others are paying the same amount and getting a screen (Samsung) that is brighter without any signs of image retention.
