Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

One thing I noticed on the second rMBP with LG scren compared to my first is that it came with 3 display profiles.  The first only came with a Color LCS display profile.

    1. Adobe RGB (1998)

    2. Generic RGB Profile

    3. sRGB IEC61966-2.1

Not sure why my first didn't haev this.  I hope this is not an attempt to masquarde the flaws in the LG display, LOL.

Update: I take this back.  I had a setting checked that was hiding these options.

I will also say that I am skeptical of some of the claims of people saying they got computers (especially 4 or 5 of them) that displayed image retention in the first 5 min of use.  I've now received two with no image retention after 15-30 min.  I think some people may have gotten one bad LG and now condemn them upon arrival.  I myself got caught up in this with my second computer (first was returned for scratch and creaky case).  However, some people have provided photographic evidence of an obvious image retention problem.  Perhaps those who are receiving bad screens are not ordering BTO configurations and they are getting computers that were manufactured a while ago with a bad batch of LG displays.  My computer is 2.7/16/768.  Also, terminal reads:

    Color LCD

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN230705T9DMJ0AE

Its hard not to be skeptical with people who say they have had 4 to 5 of them with IR claim. What are the odds of getting 4 or 5 defective panel related laptops?   If these are checked at the factory, panels that are not producing a white output, but towards the yellow side of the spectrum should be rejected.  Same with stuck/dead pixels.  I don't know any vendor that would check for IR other then throw a pattern on the display and let is set and move it around to check for ghosting, lines, uneven back lighting, and look for simple image retention.    This case of using a dark grey pattern or a checkboard pattern would probably never occur in any testing enviroment.   BTW if this is a true IR issue, it should be visible at any brightness level if you let different darkness regions linger on the screen at fair lenghts of time.

Here is a before and after of a 15 min image retention test I just ran (LG screen).

I have also attached the checkerboard pattern for others to use.  I switched to the solid dark gray background.

I think it is unfair to start criticising people who say they've had 4 or 5 screens with IR. At the end of the day, if you're spending $2000 or £2000 as it is for us in the UK, you have every right to be 100% satisfied with the product. I have had one order so far and yes I have have IR - after 5 minutes, when at first it had none. This has developed in under a week of use, and yes it is noticable with everyday usage - in particular the dark grey photoshop background! I have lost all faith in LG screens after my experience and that of others, and if I reorder and get another LG I am likely to just return it straight away. Until Apple release a statement and tell us that we can be confident in LG screens and they have fixed the problem, I will have no faith in them and will probably end up waiting for a good few months before parting with so much money again.

I'm not criticizing people who have truly received 4 or 5 screens with image retention.  I am criticizing the few posts where I've seen someone claim to have had 4 or 5 screens with image retention after 5 minutes right out of the box.  If someone can post pictures, then I will believe.  I am more likely to believe those who say their screens developed image retention over time (explains why seemingly all computers in Apple Stores with LG screens have image retention).  Can anyone with a technical knowledge of screens explain why this may be a useage-dependent issue.

Ok, that is fair enough, sorry for misunderstanding. I agree that it is perhaps best to keep an open mind at first, keep the MBP a while and test it several times. When I first tested mine I was almost "expecting" to see IR, just because it was LG and from all the posts I had read here. And then it was fine - I was wrong! But then just 4-5 days later I noticed that it had developed it (during normal use, not even "looking" for it), and I am now concerned it will get even worse with time.

Having said that, I am still pretty sure that if I get another LG screen I will probably return it. Unless I hear some promising news from Apple in the meantime. I just don't want to take the risk of ending up with IR after the 14 day return period is up. I would rather return it completely than deal with the repair process and ongoing disappointment.

I completely agree.  Even though I have no image retention now, I fear that it may be lurking around the corner (I voiced this to the Apple Rep I'm working with).  I hope I'm wrong.  And again, I would love to know why usage causes it to develop.

Any long term (3 weeks +) rMBP LG owners out there with good screens?

Yes, I've had mine 3 weeks now and still no IR. I was gutted when it arrived and I found out it was an LG, but it's perfectly fine and I use it all day programming in xcode so the same window sits there for ages.

    No problems.

What is your background? Have you tested with Solid Gray (from preset backgrounds)?

No need for checkerboard or special tests. Xcode  or Safari window would do.

I like to see that Dazzler J.  I feel as though there are more users like you than this thread makes it seem.  I'm not saying it's not a problem, but it's not the problem we all feared.  LG Display = Swine flu

I had the dark grey background for the first 2 weeks then decided to start enjoying my MBPr and changed it back to the planet one.

If there was IR, id definately see it with the windows I keep open.

I only joine this thread before mine was shipped, that's why I'm still here now, but obviously the thousands of people with decent screens aren't going to post here.

Some people must be really really unlucky, or are just kidding themselves and looking for something that's not there.

But didn't you say in your earlier post that you had no IR? Did they still let you keep swapping them until you got a samsung? Whereabouts are you btw?

That's good. I highly doubt it will ever develop if it wasn't there to begin with.
