Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I had no IR on my last one but did see a very yellowish tint so I went to swap it. They did allow me to keep swapping because I told them every LG panel had the issue so they kept letting me swap.. I did this in the Grand Central Terminal Apple store

Hi there, I'm afraid I just checked the three MBPr that were on display. Two were LG with some IR problems,

one was Samsung which appeared to be without IR. I doubt if they'll let you go through their stock for a

Samsung panel. I told the guy in the store that I wouldn't buy one until the IR problem was sorted out.

Until I pointed them to this discussion they appeared not to know about the IR problem. After I'd spoken to

the guy and showed him the IR on the LG panels he said that I'd given him some work to do.

So I guess that they may now be aware of the problem, although they sure will have a lot of returns if everyone

    only accepts Samsung panels.

    Cheers John.

So you just sat there cracking open brand-new retina mbp boxes, loading up terminal, and typing in the command until you found one with a samsung panel? They were okay with that?

i got a question, probably been asked before...

(btw the examples are purely for the purpose of my question, they are not true)

I buy a MacBook retina and 6 days later I decide to return it for a new one. If I have a problem with the new one do I have only 8 days left or does the 14 days restart?

Also how does shipping fit into this ??? If it arrives 3 days after I BUY it do I have 11 days to return it or does it start from when I receive?

Other scenario -- I have 2 days left to return it but it will take 3 days to arrive to Apple...does it freeze the 2 days and as long as I send it off in time I will be fine ? or do I have to hope it arrives at Apple before the expires?

I find that kind of incredble that a store manager would let you open five laptops packages because of your claim that every LG panel has a issue which they don't.   Again this begs the question with what they do with the opened packages?

For any other product, simply return it with the original receipt (or gift receipt) and original packaging within 14 days of the date you receive the product. If the item is returned within this timeframe, we’ll exchange it or offer a refund based upon the original payment method.

As you can see this is based on the time you receive each computer, so yes you could get computers every two weeks for the limit of they don't allow you to do this anymore.  Shipping it back, would just be notifying them of the fact and asking Apple is there is any problem.  My assumption is that you are required to get the computer back to Apple within 14 days from being received at your door.

They are sold as refurb, taken apart and used to make new computers, used for parts in repairs for other Macs, sometimes scrapped

With that being the case, what do you think about someone that tries several laptops without verifiy they have any issues in Grand Central Terminal Apple store just to get one using a Samsung panel?   I just think some Apple employee is in trouble.

I have to admit I wonder that too. Also people who "unbox" them on youtube then just send them back...

There must be a fair use limit or something ?? I mean if I didn't want to pay for my MacBook I could just buy it then keep returning them after 13 days so I effectively rent it for free but the money is stored in the MacBook form but it's still mine to redeem whenever I want

I've wondered about this too. Sending my first one back (will be picked up 11 days after delivered just because of bank holiday coming up here in the UK), but thinking about reordering before then so I'll get another in 2 weeks from order date. But when I arranged my return the customer services rep didn't even ask why I want to return or if it's even faulty, it's just part of their 14 days no questions asked... Only when I pointed out the reasons did they know. So what is to stop me reordering, returning, reordering etc until I get one I'm happy with? They will have 2 lots of my cash for much of the time if the next order gets charged before a return has been processed, but I wonder if at some point they will try and stop this happening?

I figured it's a better route to go down rather than asking for replacements on the same "order" since on the phone they have to take your word for it, yet I refuse to go to an Apple store (none close to me) just to have someone justify whether I am "allowed" a replacement for IR, and then risk getting a crap sales person (as some have) telling me to just live with it and go home.

Oh well, I'm just going to reorder until someone tells me I can't!

To be honest I wouldn't say I blame you

Try putting the same specs of your UK-bought MacBook into the US Apple store and convert the currency

when you see the difference you will never buy a Mac in the UK again!!

Then again it seems we get MUCH better Apple service here in the UK

I know, it ***** to be in the UK for buying laptops, cameras etc. Pounds for dollars - so unfair!

At least I can buy from the Education store due to my current status, so I save around 15%. But this is still a MAJOR purchase for me. Hence my fussiness to basically only accept a samsung screen now - my current LG has IR, but even if I get another seemingly ok LG, I don't think I will trust it. Not sure how many times I will reorder before giving up, but worth a try for now anyway!

MacRumors had a another thread that was worth checking out.

Any rMBP owners here with a flawless LG screen?
