Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Jobs won't be here anymore I guess?

Apple was always a lot more then Steve Jobs.  Amazing how much credit everyone gave him, yet its the underlying team at Apple that is responsable for what you are using.  I'm sure Steve when he was alive was aware and had approved the migration to retina screen computers.

looks very good. The down side is that the body has very minor chips here and there, like little dots on the aluminium.  But I think that it's too risky to send it back in hope of getting another good screen just because of cosmetic imperfections?

uhm.. that seems a joke. Or bad displays or scratches on the body...

It would be interesting to see a photo of those chips.

My will to buy one is decreasing day after day.

This is the most visible one - on the edge of display lid. Seems like somebody hit. There are some tiny ones around the top lid, but it's impossible to really take a photo without sam macro lens/camera.

uhm it seems pretty annoying, especially if it's a fresh new laptop...

Yeah, also noticed some creaking when i press a bit harder the bottom case (for example when lifiting the laptop with one hand). Wonder if they all have it?

Couple of people mentioned creaking, but there should be none of that if the screws are snug and mating properly.  Additionally that chipping on the bottom left side of the display is unacceptable IMHO, just should never see stuff like that.   That could have been easily reworked in a shop before the unit was assembled.

I notice some small movement in the bottom when lifting it with one hand. Every laptop I have had does this to some extent.

I am happy living with a mechanical quirk like this (or any creaking) as long as the unit works correctly including the screen. If it becomes more of a problem, it would be easily rectified under AppleCare :)

So I tried returning and exchanging one more time and got yet another with an LG display (that's four straight). I returned it before I even left the store. I was up front with the store manager and told him exactly what the situation was and he let me do it. It stinks, but I will do without until they work out the problem. Who knows, maybe they will really be able to fix it completely with a firmware update (I doubt it).

@Tadziak: I know exactly what you mean about the keyboard. The first one I had with the IR problem had a keyboard that felt very different from all the others. The keyboard felt mushy and did not feel very good to type on. The keys just didn't feel springy and clicky enough and it felt very sloppy to type on instead of crisp. It's hard to describe but hopefully people understand what I mean..

MacBook Pro with Retina display.  2.7ghz/16/768.

    LG display, made in week26.

I've had this machine for 7 weeks as of today.  I use it every day for too many hours a day (10 hrs+) for 5 days a week.  I code iPhone & iPad apps using Xcode and create the graphics using Photoshop and Aperture.

Trying several checkerboard and text tests and looking for IR on gray backgrounds of varying shades.  Each test spanning from 10 to 20 minutes.  And I've been really looking.

As of yet there are no IR issues with my particular machine.  Seems perfect.  And very speedy!

Was wondering if there were any relationship between the displays having IR issues and the configuration of the machine (cpu speed, ssd and memory size)?  My thought is no but as of yet my machine has been running perfectly.

I wonder what the percentage of LG displays have the IR issue.

That's why I think I keep my creaking/slightly 'chiped' macbook for the screen sake. It's really nice, bright, white, very vibrant colors and I just don't want to experience replacing 100 times because of the LG screen horror.

From what I read it's much easier to have any creaking of the body fixed at Genius/Apple service than playing screen lottery.

So, I did returned my second retina LG with screen issue. I was wondering if we can put aside possible software (drivers) root cause by testing this machine with Boot Camp in Windows environement. Any one already performed test like that?

Besides all these Image Retention issues with the LG panel on rMBP, every single person that has had the opportunity to compare both LG and Samsung have said that their Samsung screen is brighter and more vibrant than the LG screen and they don't have to turn the brightness level up as high on the Samsung.

I tested for IR on Windows 7 using bootcamp and it's there.

My second rMBP had a black  line (scratch?) on next to the trackpad:

    scratch.png

Photo is from an angle. Looking straight from above it was much more obvious. I wouldn't mind things like this as wear and tear but on a new $2500 laptop? Naah.

That in addition to the persistence and the bright column on the right edge of display. Hopefully defective parts (including displays with image persistence) are not being re-introduced back into supply chain.
