Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

 

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

 

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

    I think from the responses most of us are getting, it is not normal.

     

    Ring the customer support line, that's what I did, and refused the suggestion to go to the 'geniuses' ...what a misnomer !

     

    You can quote examples from here about the response from other countries and they should replace it. Don't let them off, the EU has strong consumer laws (that go beyond apples warranty and 14 day rule) about 'fit for purpose' and the screen you describe is not fit for purpose.

    Apple have been aware of this for over a month in the UK. The technicians have been "looking" into it since the first crap LG i had. EMEA ER's also know all about it (i've had three machine's as bad as yours and so am now exclusively dealing with them), it's the lower Apple Care reps who may not have come across it so far. Don't accept them justifying it as "normal" the product they have sold you is defective and not fit for purpose as advertised. Dependent on how long you have had it, they should be replacing, repairing or refunding you.

    Yes we have in Germany a 14 day rule, but the first problems startet at my Macbook 5 weeks later. Im not glad to hear that they are only goinf to repair it. Ive paid over 3000 Euro to have fun only 5 weeks.

     

    Apple Care is telling me, they only must change them in America not in Germany........Ive spent the last 2 Years over 8000 euro for Aplle Products......to hear we are sorry but thats not our problem, we would change them but we are not allowed

    If i understand EU consumer laws correctly then you are covered by them for the following:

     

    "All electronic items sold in Europe are covered by EU consumer laws which give the buyer a right to repair, refund or replacement if the item failed within two years."

     

    With this IR rendering the machine unfit for the purpose sold/ as advertised then the Apple store in Germany would have to offer you the above. So you are within your legal rights to ask for a full refund or replacement by not accepting the repair.

     

    Again i'm no expert on EU law, much more knowledgeable about UK consumer law - but this may help you so give it some research. Good luck!

    I just got a call from the Apple repair center here in New York. They said they would like to send me a brand new computer instead of repairing the screen, and send the old one to Apple headquarters in California for examinations. So it seems the main Apple camp is well aware of the problem and are trying to investigate.

    I was happy with my Samsung Replacement for exactly 1 day. Today I noticed some screen flaws - they look like grey smudges in the middle of the screen when I look directly and they get white (sort of like one layer of protection is scratched off) when looking from an angle. I attach a photo - anybody can tell me what it might be and if there is any chance of getting rid of it without replacing the machine again? photo 3_1.JPG

    well I have had the Samsung replacement panel for 3 days now :

     

    I have been using it for graphics work, and a fair bit of gaming (running very hot with fans full speed)....I did wonder if the high temperatures near the panel could be a reason that some people see no persistence at first but it developed later.

     

    I put a checkerboard pattern on full brighteness for over 1 hour today.....not the slightest bit of image persistence.

     

    There is no doubt that this panel is a very different beast to my original LG with persistence after only 5 minutes.

     

    I am going to keep checking every few days up to my 14 day period (while stressing the system a fair bit in between to see if there is any deterioration, but so far nothing)

    Well guys, writing this lines with my rMBP with a Sammy Display and no IR. I had to fight for it ... My first 3 got the LG and now the Sammy. Problem is, I bought it in an Apple-Store (not online) Now i paid for 2 machines and I will get my money back, when the online ordered rMBP is send back to Apple. Dont get me wrong, I am very happy with the hardware now, but this is not the way it is supposed to be. Poor support Apple and very problemtic handling of the problem :/ And I even got luck, cause the guy at the store said to the first rMBP I got: "I looks good, whats your problem? (it got no IR, but my original was in the first days also perfect, now, after 3 weeks it got IR after 2 minutes, no joke!)" I said, the LG screen. After a lot back and forth he granted me one single try and said: "If it looks good, you have to keep it, even its an LG, we wont grant you much more >>tries<<" Well, as I said, I got luck. But again, this is not the way it suppossed to be... (But thanks anyway to the guy in the store!)

    I forgot to mention, that I did a quick side by side comparison of the two screens and they were both exactly the same. I didnt used any tools, but just a quick look at the pictures. The brightness is the same and the contrast and the whole impression. Except for the IR on the LG...

    Hi all,

     

    Been tracking this thread for about a week now.  Finally took my machine in for a screen replacement earlier this week, and very strange results when it came back.  When I now run the command to check the screen manufacturer, I get only the following:

     

    Color LCD

     

    No model number or any other number for that matter.  Anyone know what this means?

    instead. (as DrAndyWright noted, without the "p" at the end though)
