Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

But there is going to be a production cutoff date when they are producing panels that are no longer exhibiting this issue.  I think it would be safe to assume Apple has already addressed the issue with LG and it would take some time for all the previous stock to be used up.  I am hoping Apple will eventually make an official statement about the issue and what will be done to rectify it.  It could be they were waiting for manufacturing to catch up with demand before having some large scale replacement program.  (and I am extremely picky about monitor quality)

How about the thought that probably all those MBPr demo laptops in stores are examples of earliest builds of this product?  BTW my current LG laptop is week 33, not one of the first.

We can al hope that's the case, but if you're wrong, then you get stuck with a crappy display with IR and possibly poor color represntation. Personally, after going through two bad LG screens, I returned the second one for a refund and am now impatiently waiting to see what happens. I'm just not willing to risk $3,500+ (2.6/16/512 + AC + Tax) because this has dragged on so long with only inconsistent responses from Apple ranging from "sure, we'l swap that for you" to "sorry, IR is normal on all LCD screens".

thanks but I really don't know how to drop my project for 5 days. I just can't imaging. Otherwise I need to copy 200G data back to old pc and use it as alternative for these days, then I need to figure out all the accounts and data which sync with MBP already.

no, they told me they do have and not 1 but 2. I told my difficult and asked if I could line up then I would come back 5 days later or they could call me anytime when they are ready to work on my laptop, I'll be the store within 30 minutes. The answer was NO because they don't know when they will have time to replace the screen. It could be anytime during the 5 days.

I would love to believe that this is true and Apple has already addressed the issue but I think it takes much, much longer than you think to re-engineer a design and retool an assembly line.

Can someone comment on the colour differences between the Samsung and LG panels, especally in the colour tint of the white and the blue?

I ordered a rMPB (2.3ghz processor, 16gb RAM, 256gb SSD) on August 23rd and ordered with 2-3 day shipping. after 4 days I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and asked why it hadn't come and after we found the order the woman said it wasnt coming until september 5th. Do you think maybe apple has realized the problem and is holding my order and many others to fix the screen problem before they send them out?

Got my rMBP last Thursday and so far so good. I've got the LG panel and ran the checker board test a number of times and so far not a hint of IR. My panel info is:

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN232209RQDMJ0A0

How do i determine the manufacture date of the panel?

It never ceases to amaze me how defensive people get when they are hysterical and others won't join in their hysteria.  It's like a personal insult to them that anyone would try to have a level head about this issue.

It never ceases to amaze me how defensive people get when you suggest that their favorite company isn't perfect and that when you pay a premium price for a premium product you should get premium quality.

There isn't a single person on this thread (OK, maybe there was one, a long time ago) who suggested otherwise.

This is a huge screw up by Apple, and believe me, i am a big apple fan since the iPod and mainly since my iPhone 3G. I have owned the 3G,4, and will be buying the 5. I had an iPod nano, i have an iPad 2. and this is my first mac. I want this computer because it is super nice, but it better work well.

I am not going crazy over this issue, seeing as i won't be able to get home and look at mine until tomorrow.

In reality, many of us are buying this computer for work. And a cra ppy screen is not good.

Accepting something from apple that is subpar is stupid.

I can go get a 900 PC with a screen that works better (may not exactly look better) but it will work better

NOBODY, except maybe one poster a while back, suggested that anyone should accept this.  But what so many people cannot seem to comprehend, is how a suggestion that WAITING until Apple has a chance to actually come up with a fix for this issue, for those people for whom the issue does NOT MATERIALLY IMPACT their daily use of the device (and I am pretty confident that MOST users fall into this camp), DOES NOT equate to accepting the problem.  It equates to solving the problem in a MORE REASONABLE WAY that wastes less of your time and less of Apple's time.

And you ARE being hysterical if, in response to reasonable discussion about the issue, you feel the need to descend into personal attacks, i.e. calling people fanboys, for no reason other than having a difference of opinion.

I guess none of us know if Apple is going to eventually decide the image retention is "a feature, not a bug", so I suppose there is some risk there.  But I for one know that I will give Apple a VERY hard time if this ends up being their ultimate response.  And I suspect there are many others who will do the same.  But I have faith that Apple is not going to leave the early adopters of one of its highest profile products out in the cold like that.

Are you really unable to work on your laptop at all because of the image retention problem?  Can you just ride it out for a while?

I've been repeating this for a while now, but I guess even I don't know exactly how long it is acceptable to wait.  I'm thinking I'll give Apple another month to recognize and address the issue in a public way before I start raising a stink.

Lots of people have posted their own personal opinions but as far as I know nobody has done any real measurements to verify them.

I have written to Anand Lal Shimpi at Anandtech asking if he would consider addressing the issue.  He is one of the most respected independent reviewers of Mac hardware and I think he has the tools and expertise to add some useful measurements to our suppositions.

However, he hasn't answered back in almost a week.  Kind of disappointing.
