Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Kind of strange that this thread has become so big, but nearly no tech magazine has reported the issue . . .

Over on Macrumors, they're talking about 13" retina MBAs coming out sometime in the fall.  They got this from some info on CNet.  I'm not sure how much truth there is to it.  Something about a large number of 13" panels being manufactured or something like that.  Anyway, story's over on the macrumors front page.  The interesting thing is that the screens are being manufactured by Samsung, LG, and Sharp.  I wonder if LG got the IR problems worked out in enough time to contribute to these 13" panels.

Ordered mine from France on the 5th of August, received it the 21st of August, Samsung display:), felt releived, perfect screen so far, won't bothered running any tests. If i notice burn in at some point then i will react.

Apple should annonce as soon as possible that they are now shipping Samsung displays only untill LG's are fixed.

I think there's still some uncertainty.

Even if they'll fix the LG issue(s) I think I'll be reluctant to keep LG. I _do not_ trust LG in anyway. I had really bad experiences with LG in the past and I will not give one more cent to them.

But there is going to be a production cutoff date when they are producing panels that are no longer exhibiting this issue.  I think it would be safe to assume Apple has already addressed the issue with LG and it would take some time for all the previous stock to be used up.  I am hoping Apple will eventually make an official statement about the issue and what will be done to rectify it.  It could be they were waiting for manufacturing to catch up with demand before having some large scale replacement program.  (and I am extremely picky about monitor quality)

I sure hope that's the case. Like I said before - recall. It happens. It *****. But, what are they gonna do? They go on and on about how wonderful this retina is and....this.

Thank God we're not all using these things to drive around our families...This is like saying "Oh yea your windshield is defective in your car, but don't worry those blind spots you see sometimes when the sun hits it the right way? That's normal, that's, uh, just the special retina coating. See, I can reproduce it on other cars here in the showroom and don't worry it only lasts a few minutes...So the odds of getting into an accident are super low."

Yea...Well, fortunately this is a computer and not a car...But it's still a SEVERE issue. They shouldn't ignore it, it would be just as irresponsible as if it were a car with a problem severe enough to issue a recall.

I was again told to bring in my rMBP for repair after having my display replaced for IR once. I tried to explain I don't want to have my Mac opened and closed too often (the screws will eventually get skrewd...), only to play russian roulette hoping to get a healthy Samsung.

The Apple guy kindly said I had to go to the Store and have it judged by a Genius and that's the only thing he can do for me, because there's no way to know which display is a Samsung and which isn't.

He even thought about replacing my Mac, but this wouldn't guarantee me I'll get a Samsung. Sadly, this makes a lot of sense to me.

Nevertheless, tomorrow I'll try talking to the Store chief, because this is getting too far for me. All I want is just a working display, no more, no less!

    I'll keep you guys updated...

I m using a retina MacBook pro base configuration with an LG display LP154WT1SJA1.I m a bit confused right now nd not in a state to comment.Obviously I can't return or replace my notebook and even I m facing IR issues but it's quite negligible and the retina display is simply gorgeous.i have seen nothing like it ever before and by god's grace is not play

Plagued by issues such as yellow tint or dead pixels.

I just wanna know whether I should make efforts to get this display replaced or not because it is so very aesthetic and beatific that I can't get my eyes of it.Retention issues only arise when a dark gray background is set.Contrast Ratio's,brightness levels and every other single element of this notebook is just ground breaking and blow away.I m not getting any answers to my questions from anywhere so thought of sharing what I had with intellectual people sharing their enriching experiences.

Can this issue be solved by Apple via a firmware or software update??

Nd if theres any developer out there with OSX 10.8.2 beta having an LG retina display in possession to check if the update exterminates this cynical issue once and for all, cause as far as I know osx lion 10.7.5 beta has no known issues but apple has asked developers to focus on graphics and display related issues.

Plzzzzz apple solve this via a software update and prove us all wrong.Come on we all love Apple cause of a reason:((

And Can we make experiments with color sync and digital color meter built in applications to solve this issue??

    I really need answers:(((((

    Crying(cause I m a 16 year old kid)

Oh, I almost forgot... He told me this:

"Until officially stated otherwise, Apple will treat both the LG and the Samsung displays as equivalent"

Image retention issue with an LG display here.

I was out of the 30 day return policy for BBY, so I had to make a trip to the Apple store. They couldn't exchange it on the spot and had to keep it for a quoted 1-3 days for "complete diagnostics." I'll report back here and let you guys know of the results. Today is day 3, too, so hopefully they'll at least get back to me within the time frame.

Third Retina arrived today. LG and of course IR is present. Not as bad as the second one but still very clearly there.

I've lost the lottery three times so far, doubt I'd have better chance on fourth. May just return it and wait for Apple to figure out the mess.
