Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I agree, you should go seek support and a replacement

Mine is from week 29 and it shows faint burn-in after a image stays static for more than 15 mins. At this point it's difficult for me to decide whether it's worth it to get an exchange. I don't think Apple has yet to fix this issue.

I still have a week to my 14-day deadline. Might try to get an exchange late next week to see if the newer ones are any better.

OK the moment of truth. Mine is week 30, 2.3/16/256. I left a lot of windows from Safari and Mail for 30 minutes and never seen anything.

Maybe for now or it was because of the room light. Will test again to night.

Hey Maziyar, been following your case and very interested to see how it turns out for you.

My replacement rMBP is on its way (just left China by the look of it). I will be sure to post back.

I still have not worked out my build date/week, if someone can advise on that it would be much appreciated. I can then furnish the forum with the appropriate information.

I have tried the serial number website but it seems to not be able to tell me build week...

    Run: ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6

in Command, it'll give you either 'LSN154YL01001' (Samsung) or 'LP154WT1-SJA1' (LG/Sharp).

And build week can be found by entering serial number at: http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php

    Ok. I get the following:

    LP154WT1-SJA1 - So LG/Sharp.

The serial number site is broken IMO. I get the following:

    Build Week

    - Week 1 (January) or week 28 (July)

It can't be week 28 (July) because I got mine in my hands on the 9th of July. It can't be week 1 because it wasn't even announced!!

    It's a Week 28.

So far I haven't seen any Week 30 models that have gotten the problem. Watertube has his Week 29, so that's somewhat of a middle finger to the burn-in being a batch problem. It's probably just a QC problem [not good].

    Is it limited to LG/Sharp?

A thread on MacRumors states that your screen is LG.

    Hey all,

There has been a command-line method for checking the model # of the LCD in the system that has been floating around for a while, and as people have been trying it on the new Retina MacBook Pro, they've been discovering that it only ever spits out "Color LCD" as an identifier.

I've determined that if you modify the command slightly, you can get the system to give up the model number of the display. Simply replace the IODisplayEDID part of the command with \"EDID\" like so:

    Code:

    MacBook-Pro:~ root# ioreg -lw0 | grep \"EDID\" | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6 Color LCD LP154WT1-SJA1 DCN2253002BDMJ0AE

My guess is that all of the displays currently shipping on rMBP are the same make and model (LG Philips), but it would be interesting to see if anybody else gets different results on their system.

I would safely assume that it is LG.

    Hi mate,

I tested again this time 40 minutes with full screen Mail and high brightness. Two desktops with two different backgrounds (light gray and dark gray). couldn't find anything.

I did run the command line and this is what I've got:

    LSN154YL01001

People said LP = LG LSN = Samsung.

So far so good. Check the closing lid issue with Xcode open and chrome with safari. I plugged keyboard and turned Caps Lock on. After closing lid, after 15 sec the light went to off. Guess it went to sleep. (If I'm not mistaken)

Hopefully Week 30 is a batch safe if we don't see any defective one here.

That's awesome news! I hope you enjoy that thing, give me your luck, I'm getting anxious now!

It's kind of confusing. The people who are just getting Color LCD have no clue what brand it is..

Hi all. My rMBP is scheduled to arrive today but apparently DHL got delayed and i think they will deliver it to me tomorrow. I would like to ask if there is any change of setting required to prevent the screen from turning off after some time, in order to test the retentivity issue? One more question, how do i check the make of the LCD? Seems quite complicated to me, it would be good if someone can explain it to me in detail. Thanks in advance.

I do remember some people (Mac Rumor) went to some madness and just returning their machine (MBA) to get one made by Samsung (I think it was SSD I can't remember).

But at the end if we trust Apple, we should give them a benefit of a doubt that they will give us good stuff. I hope yours as well be without any problem. Mine is too soon to say it's the perfect one. At least for now the defective LCD is out of the list. Lets give it some time.

I'll keep you guys posted if I find out something.

That sounds very promising... I'm really happy for you.  It's getting really hard to get a Mac as Apple designed these days.  I got a MBA 11 inch a few weeks ago and it had a sharp but dull screen, got a replacement and it has a bright but washed out display, and so now I'm dealing with someone higher up at Apple Care. I actually don't care if my LCD is samsung, lg, or whomever.. i just care that it's colorful, bright, and sharp.  It does seem tho that Samsung is the screen of choice... my 13 inch MBA has a samsung and the screen is beautiful.
