Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    @DJCoffee

Can you report what configuration you've been ordering?  Like 2.6/16GB/500GB or whatever?

Wondering whether to keep playing the lottery to see if I can get a Samsung or whether to just return it for refund and wait until this blows over.  I had an LG (with IR) and just received my second LG (advance return) two days ago.

    Thanks.

I just received my second replacement (third computer) yesterday, and died a little inside when I saw it was another LG. At this point, I'm at a total loss. At max brightness and on one of the picture backgrounds, it will display the checkerboard image retention after about 20 minutes--but it quickly dissipates. I called AppleCare to exchange it, but they're making it really difficult to do it again. I'm considering just giving up and taking it in later if it gets worse. I just hate the idea of having the screen ripped off the body. My previous MBP had a creaky hinge, and I'd be enraged if this one developed a similar issue. Are people still getting Samsung replacements? Maybe I should just return it altogether.

Well, I thought I was lucky to have an LG screen that does not have "image retention", but it does. First time I ran Retinauser's rentention test there was no noticable image retention. Til today, when I noticed after working with rMBP that when switching to a grey screen I could see the outline of the icons on the dock, quite clearly as an ghostly image. SO i ran the image retention i could clearly see the checkerboard image after 15 or 20 minutes. It already shows after 4-5 minutes, but is still really light. Weird thing is, this didn't occur three days back. I have built to order base Macbook retina with upgraded ram.

    Color LCD
    LP154WT1-SJA1
    DCN22630L8MDMJ0AX
    Persistent image time: 19:59
    Ghost persistence time: 03:18
    Used gray tone: 90
    Display brightness: 56.25
    Used pattern: Chessboard
    Result code: T11959T2318P1G5aB90I0

Its nowhere near as bad as some users are reporting, but its there. And mostly likely gonna get worse. My machine is from week 27, and I bought in Switzerland.

I called with applecare, and they were really helpfull... They offered to replace my screen, which I'll never accept specially since the machine is only 1.5 months old. Apparently aftersales was already closed, so the guy said they may replace the machine but this isn't usually what they do since its already outside of 14 days no question asked return policy..

anyway.. It really does seem as if alot people with LG panels do have IR... bet most of them don't notice it..

I give up. Lost the lottery three times, don't have time for more replacement cycles.

    Asked for refund.

    Bad Apple.

Have you installed 10.8.1? Because the symptoms are the same as by mine. Used for about a month without any IR with 10.8, then 10.8.1 came, and the screen got screwed up.

What makes me rage is that Apple is not telling anything officially, like they're investigating the problem, how's the progress going or whatsoever. We paid a lot for a premium category notebook, now we would like to be handled appropriately.

Reading the suffering of other users with the replacement/repair, i'm thinking on choosing the refund, and buying it later when all this storm is over.

You can only hope that's the case, but there are plenty of people that thought their LG screen was fine when they first got it only to see IR increase over the next few days/weeks. Best of luck, but after two returns due to heavy IR LG screens, I'm waiting until Apple officialy responds before trying again.

I just placed a second order for 2.6/16/512. First LG went back yesterday and is being processed for a full refund.

2nd attempt should be here (UK) by around 7th Sept, so fingers crossed for winning the Samsung lottery - even though I'm not very hopeful. If it's LG I will seriously  put it straight back in the box and return it the next day. I kept the first one for 11 days and IR developed very rapidly from around Day 5. I just can't be bothered with that anymore. If it's LG it goes straight back and I will have a 3rd go at the lottery. I don't think I'll have much more patience after that.

Can't believe how crappy this is for everyone. And I agree with the comment a few posts ago, that probably all LG have this issue to some varying degree, and I bet the majority of people with "good" LG screens just haven't noticed it, or it is taking a few weeks to develop. I can completely believe that people are ending up with 4 or 5 bad LGs - once you know about this probalem you do notice it more easily, yes, but that doesn't mean people are "making it up" as some posters have suggested.

It's £2000 here in the UK and that is ALOT of money to me and most people. If you don't think this is an issue, then you obviously have too much money to waste and not enough sense. For that cost this screen should be fecking PERFECTION!

Good luck folks, I will report back next week.

Ok, I just bought a 2012 MacBook pro 2.6 gh 8gig ram with 500gb flash yesterday.

I don't want to read through all 123 pages of this so if someone could help me out that would be wonderful

    What is burn-in?

What screens do it impact? (LG OR SAMSUNG)

How can you tell if you have a (lg or Samsung)

    Is the image retention permanent?

I'm worried that I just dropped $2800 on a laptop, and I'm going to have issues with it.

I noticed a reduced brightness on my LG screen, compared to some in the store (With mine in the store with me).  I really wanted to have a good starting point, so I returned the unit, NQA and will re-order at some point

    Karolyi,

you are in the wrong about this being a software issue.

Image retention is a hardware problem. If you have graphics distortion, this is a different issue altogether. But if you have image retention, no amount of software tweaks will do any good.

Whether it is Lion, Mountain Lion 10.8.0. .1, or .2, it does not matter.

That you experienced IR after you installed an update is merely concidential. Besides, many users have experienced IR only after a number of weeks of usage (such as my case on the first LG display, then a few days on the second LG display).

I recommend going to an Apple Store and asking for repairs.

    Good luck!

Yes, I did install 10.8.1 a few days back when it came out. My machine originally came with 10.7.4, then I upgraded it 10.8.

I really doubt it software related though.. What did make a difference for me, first time I ran the test and had no noticable IR. The screen was cold. When I really started noticing it, the screen was warm and it was the desktop icons on the screen that showed up on a grey background, after using the machine for some time..

I agree wiht JustsayNo that issue was noticable when the machine was new, but it showed up after some use..

It could be a coincidence, i agree.

Unfortunately, i'll be changing places in the next few weeks, and cannot bring it to an apple store asking for repair/refund.

After i managed to settle down in the next city, i'll be looking for repair/replacement/refund, depends on the situation.
