Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

After running the terminal command mentioned earlier, it looks like my faulty screen is LP154WT1-SJA1 - so like everyone else with issues, LG.

FYI - I took my custom-to-order MBPR to the Apple store, and while they COULD just repair the screen, they urged me to call Apple Care and ask for a replacement instead since mine is less than a week old (currently Apple Stores aren't equipped to replace made-to-order MBPRs).

For anyone else who ordered a customized MBPR from Apple.com - the number is 1-800-MY-APPLE.

    I'm calling now.

So you can't just go into the Apple Store and ask for a replacement and have them order one?

Apparently (from what I was told), because I ordered a customized system, I have to call and ask for replacement (the Apple Store is capable of ordering a replacement SCREEN and doing that repair)... but the Genius said that if it were him, he'd call and get a brand new one instead (they can't provide custom built replacements in-store... yet).

Now the frustrating thing is that I'm on the phone with Apple Care right now and they're giving me a hard time about replacing it (they are insisting I take it BACK to the Apple store to be "serviced"), and all this is despite the fact that the Genius at the Apple Store just convinced me to call and ask for a full replacement instead.

*sigh* I'm starting to get really mad, actually.

    Update:

Got off the phone. Eventually Apple Care sent me on to Customer Service and they're expediting me a replacement that should arrive later this week. I'm glad they did the right thing - the only reason I'm remotely comfortable being an Apple early adopter is the fact that they ultimately haven't let me down when I've had quirky hardware problems. That doesn't mean I haven't gotten the occassional unhelpful Genius (*cough* Brea *cough*), but it always turns out well in the end. And that level of service is why I keep buying Apple.

It seems that the majority of IR problems is connected with LG/Sharp screens. If anyone has a Samsung screen, please run an IR test for us?

    Pretty please?

I'm guessing people with Samsung screens aren't going to go looking for this thread... since, you know, they aren't having problems. :-)

Fun fact: LG was also the responsible party when some of the first batches of iPad 2 screens had light bleeding problems. With this track record, I wouldn't be surprised if LG was also responsible for the intermittent screen discoloration problems when the iPhone 4S launched. It seems pretty clear that LG's production and quality control processes just aren't cutting it.

But still, I'd like to see this confirmed too... if the folks with no problems are sporting Samsung screens.

That's a valid point. I have yet to see a Samsung screen have a problem in this thread. Yeah, I don't like LG. Quite frankly, I have Samsung everything [from TVs to Desktop screens].

My replacement should be with me later in the week. I will post back my finds as soon as possible.

If the replacement isn't good then I will be annoyed...

    Hi folks,

I've got the Samsung one like I said before. I ran the test for 30 and 40 minutes. Didn't see anything. It's week 30.

I don't even have the other issues like graphic glitches or KP and I've installed almost everything that could be a problem.

Well this is it. But I have sth else that makes no sense

    Hi,

I have a Samsung display as well without any issues. Tested it for an hour and no ghosting or any other problem. I am using it every day heavily for software development.

    Build week 28

    cheers

My replacement laptop from week 26 is marginally better than my original week 22 machine but the image persistence is still very apparent. The replacement has the LG screen (LP154WT1-SJA1). I'm very disappointed but will probably live with it. I'd rather not get my screen replaced. Once a laptop part is replaced, the form and fit are just not as good.

I would honestly call back and tell them that you're very disappointed. It might even get you something in return [my ISP kept going down back in March. I called them and gave them a mouthful. I had a downloading limit of 100GB / month. Now it's 200GB / month until next April].

in Command, it'll give you either 'LSN154YL01001' (Samsung) or 'LP154WT1-SJA1' (LG/Sharp).

And build week can be found by entering serial number at:http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php

Watertube explained it excellently a page or two back.

    Hm.

I just got an exchange Model from Apple, because my old rMBP showed the Ghost issue.

Now I have the new one here and still Ghosting. Plus I think that the screen gets a little bit red/pink on the left top side. Very frustrated right now...

The Screen from the new Model is an LG/Sharp.

Badly I didnt checked on the old one, because I just found out about the command.

Now I am thinking about getting again a new one, but dont really now if there is any sense or its just a slot-machine to get the right screen out of it.

Though the support is quite nice, so maybe I will give it a shot...
