Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I wish you guys would stop talking about firmware updates.  There is no evidence aside from speculation about this and all this talk about it as if it's a done deal is leading to alot of pointless discussion and confusion.

I was addressing firmware updates as being routine early on in the life of a laptop instead of it being treated as a negative, not adding to the confusion such as going back and forth about LCD/back lighting theory like a few here.

Well I hope you are lucky but, the common experience of this forum thread would indicate that there is a high likelihood that you will start to see image retention in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.  But please, keep us updated either way, we need data points.

Still puzzled by the few that reported this very dramatic change?   Usually its very gradual, not boom there you are.

Am getting my rMBP on Monday, keeping my fingers crossed for it to be a Samsung. My order is for a 2.6/16/256. I live in India, where Apple is officially not selling anything other than the two base configurations (no BTO for us yet), so I got mine ordered through my sister in California, and will get a friend to bring it in for me.

While I know that it is not reasonable to return a product purely on the basis of the manugfacturer being LG, I certainly cannot afford to take a chance on IR problem cropping up for me after I receive it here, given the BTO configuration's lack of availability here. So unless it is a perfect Samsung, back it goes to Apple, with me taking a full refund under the NQA return policy. Will keep you posted with my experience. Just to educate my decision a bit more, are there  any indicators of the fallibility of the third panel manufacturer AUO (?) - I believe there is a third panel serial sequence other than LPxxx and LSNxxx... LAUxxx out there?

If I do in fact lose this Samsung/LG Lottery, I will send my own variant of that email as well ("liked" it on page 136), just to put in my perspective on how this lowered confidence in this plagued product release is affecting prospective customers as well as Apple loyals who desperately need an upgrade (I am overdue for an upgrade for my 2007 Macbbok Pro which has all but died on me, but my livelihood as a graphic designer depends on the machine, and it has taken me all these years of holding off on an upgrade to afford it now. Can't take such a chance on it.)

Hey guys, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am on the verge of purchasing a rMBP this Saturday with the highest confirguration 2.7/16/768 but now after reading how many people have this problem, im a bit scared.

Are ALL rMBP's like this? or is it only a "bad batch"? How would I be able to confirm if it is a Samsung or LG display? Afterall the computer is about $4K, this is my most expensive investment after my car LOL so I definitely do not want to have issues with this.

Please shed some light on this. Thanks

I am on my second rMBP with LG display. The first screen was noticeably darker than older MacBooks I had had, and noticeably darker than a Samsung display rMBP I compared it to in the Apple Store. I arranged for a return. I'm now working with the second, which I've had for two days, and already noticing IR issues.

I spoke with a management representative from the Apple Online Store this morning, and was suprised by what he told me:

Apparently he has heard about this issue from 2 other people in the past 72 hours. He also told me that he was aware that the issue was one with LG screens and that the Samsungs appear not to have it (we know this, but I was surprised to hear it from someone at Apple). He said he knew this from information he was getting internally from Apple. His recommendation to me was to return my computer for a refund, wait a month until the issue is resolved, and then order the machine again.

This seems like a fair and honest solution but I don't want to be without a computer all that time, and told him as much. He is going to see what else he can find out and get back to me.

Problem is, every Apple Store handles the situation very differently. This is bad!

    I can 2nd that

alhtough not the part about it being bad !!

The way they deal with warranty seems pot luck with no consistency .. again NOT saying this is bad

just example, I had some broken headphones 3 times...

1st time: they replaced them for same ones

2nd time: they let me choose any headphones within same price as the broken ones (i chose same but still..)

3rd time: they replaced just the headphones, i kept same box and everything else

I literally just got back from the apple store (UK) after showing my ***ked up lg screen. i was glad to hear that the guy there had already heard of the problem and  also admitted it. A replacement was ordered (which i wanted anyways instead of getting a new machine and having to restore everything). Obviously he could make sure i get a sumsung, but he assured me that they would treat the problem if the new screen has a problem too, so i guess thats some sort of relief, and also quite frustrating.

On another note, i found a samsung display rmbp and was curious about the brightness and colour differences.

I found that there was no significant difference in brightness levels. however the samsung appeared to have slightly whiter...whites. thats the only difference i saw in 5-10 mins of using the samsung.

I also use the TestRetention app on the samsung -> not a millisecond of retention. and as expected, retention was present on 2 lg screens on display.

whatever happens, im going to send an email on 03/09 using all my email accounts

Is there any image of the problem I can look at? Can someone post one?

Not to belittle your problem but I am thinking if it is this bad why are they selling them ?!?!

    Jon P D,

you have 138 pages of material to look at. Re-issuing the same posts over and over again, by the same people (including me), would banalize the thread as merely being a few disgruntled Apple fanboys repeating the same message.

I suggest you use Google with the search tool site:discussions.apple.com/... and look for images !

    Peace out.

Here are two of pictures of the IR on my rMBP...

    IR_Example_Screenshot 1.png

    IR_Example_Screenshot 2.png

Believe me, the issue looks much worse in person. These pictures don't do it justice. Also, it seems to be getting worse as each day goes by. I used to need to do the checkerboard pattern (first picture) to see it, but now simple text (second picture) works just fine. Both of these images took only 5 minutes to create and lasted for at least that long on the screen afterward. It's totally unacceptable, especially for the graphics professionals that this product has been targeted towards.
