Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I hope LG got their $hit together

The brightness is waaay better than my old dell and i find it to be too bright at night (til i turn it down)

I just received my 4th replacement computer today and it has a Samsung screen.  2.7/16/768 is my configuration.  As far as color and brightness go, it doesn't seem much different from the two LGs I had (I'm not sure what screen the first computer was manufactured with).

I am being offered a repair, no replacement even with Apple Care. Also the repair would take 2 weeks and there is NO way to expedite in any way. School just started and I sold my old macbook a week ago. Now I will have no computer for school or work for 2 weeks (possibly longer) to get a replacement screen. I am completely screwed for 2 weeks, I have no idea what I am going to do for school have to borrow a friends or something.

Anyone getting repairs how long did it take? Did they replace with a Samsung screen?

Running the retention app for 1 min, the image remains ghosted for 1 min and 30 seconds.

I have had my rMBP for two months and the problem seems to be getting worse. I feel like I am getting screwed royally.

I will never buy another Apple product again and will be telling everyone the same. Getting a Samsung direct and saving a ton of cash doing it.

they agreed for the replacement, you were lucky. I got the first screen replaced within 2 hrs at local store, and no replacement anymore from there. Now I can only wait till Apple release kind of a UPDATE to FIX the problem. And yes, I do have apple care.

I pay for Apple Care, does that help me at all in this situation -- NO -- does it get me express return or a replacement to use while I wait for my computer to repaired -- NO. My livelihood depends on this machine not to mention furthering my education to help create a better life for myself. Inconvenient is an understatement. Does Apple offer me any resolution to my problem -- NO. I received a different answer every time I spoke to a different representative of Apple. The only thing I was offered was to replace with the only 16GB model they carry in Apple stores -- the maxed out version. The kicker was I would then owe the difference -- $1300 and it still might be an LG.

Anyone have a direct line to engadget, gizmodo, or any tech sites to make them aware of how poorly Apple is handling this issue. An image remaining on the screen for 90 seconds after being on there for 60 seconds is not normal behaviour in any shape or form.

I dont think we should make multiple Facebook pages, but just stick to one (:

Anyway, I'm following this thread for about a month now, and this is my first message. My MacBook Pro got a new screen 2 weeks ago, but nothing fixed. Still an LG screen. So I called the Apple Store in Amsterdam and made an appointment for next sunday. They were suprised because they never heard of this issue and wanted me to show them.

So I hope I hope this problem will be fixed soon! And I will still follow this thread, hoping to see an official statement from Apple.

you are right. I'm not an apple fan but I purchased 4 iPhon4s for my parents and friends. This laptop was my first apple product. I was exciting to become an apple user and now I just want to get refound if I can.

I took the laptop into Apple and they're replacing the screen. If you don't have AppleCare get it as when your 1 year warranty expires the screen costs over $1100 to replace!!

Funny thing was the apple associate look in their database and he said he didnt find this issue arising or being flagged so I'm not sure if this issue is with a small percentage of retinas.

Couldn't wait till September 3. Went ahead and sent:

    Dear Mr. Cook,

I wanted to let you know about a problem I'm having with my new (less than a month old) Retina MBP. Any time I have a window open for more than a minute or two, an image of it burns into the desktop. After I send an email, you can still read the text on the screen. When this message is sent in a minute or two, I'll still be able to read it burned into the desktop for five to ten minutes before it fades away.

I've contacted Apple support, through 1 800 MY APPLE, and while Mark, the senior advisor I spoke with, was very friendly and empathetic, his solution is wholly unacceptable. He told me to set my desktop wallpaper to solid white, and to make a "sliding tile" screen saver from a solid white screenshot, and to leave these settings in place until Apple releases a firmware update. Needless to say, this is a ridiculous non-solution.

I didn't mind paying the $2,400 for this machine, as I've long used, and loved, Apple's MBP line, and this was supposed to be the best you've ever made. This display cannot be the norm, yet on Apple's community discussion forums I came across this thread with more than 180,000 views, and 2,000 responses. It seems I am not alone in my troubles. It appears, from the thread, that the trouble is with Retina displays manufactured by LG. If that is the case, then these should be recalled. I paid the same amount as users who received working Samsung displays, and I should receive the same experience and quality for my money.

I am confident that if you are made aware of this problem, it will be corrected immediately.

Thank you sir, and I look forward to Apple's response to this issue.

That's because they don't call it Image Retention in their DB. When I called to have the second replacement arranged the second rep on the call looked at the report and it was something along the lines of "Circles and Squares on the screen, distorted graphics". I kid you not. I have no idea how the first person put that in there when I was talking about retention/ghosting.

I just want to repeat what I posted here before

I learned from Genius at apple store

    1) "see, while we are talking, it is less than 5 minutes the ghosts disappeared, so this is not a hardware issue"

    2) "this will happen under certain condition, so it is not a hardware issue"

    3) "If we replaced the screen, what about it happened again?"
