Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

hey said there weren't any updates from Apple, but they could swap my mac. Unlike everyone else I preferred them replacing just my screen.

Was your machine still within the 14 day period???

Dont know why you guys are having such a hard time..first off, alway ask for the top manager of the store..explain that you spent close to 3000 or more for the machine and this is unacceptable...always buy the machine with american express...so if you have a problem and they dont want to replace the machine for you dispute it with them..telll them the unit is defective and in 99 per cent of the cases you'll at least get your money back..explain that to the manager also...now here is the thing..if you want a samsung screen..your probably not going to get one

if you order it online or from educational store...most i've seen dont..they shipped alot of those samsung screen units to the stores...tell your manager to look in the ripley or riley system..which tells him thru the serial numbers what components are in the box..they can tell if its a samsung screen...if they tell you they dont have it..tell them you know for a fact they do....and that you dont want to keep coming back for a defective LG. ...although if you get a nice manager like i did and they work with you...you may get lucky..there are some LG's that are fine...and have very decent white levels..in my store two units i tested have LG screens..there is a program called...displaydetector.dmg google it...then download it and install it on the machines they have in the stores...it will check exactly what screen is there...without the need to go into terminal mode...replacing the screen for me was a disaster..i received an LG screen..which by the way showed no signs of IR..but after a few days..i noticed the dreaded yellowing and sure enough when i went back and compared it to their machines it was obvious..now bear in mind my store wouldnt give me a new machine because it was 40 days old....i called applecare complained..you need to do that..and tell them you've spent 3000 on it...what are they going to do...you also can call regular support ask to speak to a level 2  technician explain your problem...he will ask you to send in a screen shot...then ask him if he can put in the notes that this machine needs to be replaced...if he does that...you'll have no problem when you refer to it at the apple store..they have to do what the technician wrote in the notes...but like i have mentioned my first samsung screen is great...i had software issues with it ...alot...and was pulling hair out over it...i went back and they went in back for 20 min and thru that riley ripley system found another samsung..only to find it was yellowing on the screen..and some of them blame it on glue issue which will resolve itself..no it doesnt...also if all else fails and they give you the b.s line that they wont replace it...or the screen...tell them your on 10 different blogs on the internet and you will blast their store and explain how you were treated at apple...im brutal when it comes to that...and they know me now...they are very nice to me in the stores...I guess its the way you go about getting what you want....good luck to all.....keep fighting for what you want.

Check this page by Cnet  http://news.cnet.com/8301-33620_3-57454551-278/forget-retina-look-how-much-the-n ew-macbook-pro-displays/

Scroll down to the part where  MacBook Pro retina and the old MacBook are compared. In that picture the Retina screen is clearly yellow. Basically most people are ignorant of the problems they are facing or they just don't know what to do.

I must admit I find it hard to judge the 'yellowness' of my Samsung screen.

I look at it and sometimes I think I see a yellow hue in the corner, but as I move my eyes or angle of view, it seems to come and go or move :)

Not being a professional photographer I don't have calibration equipment to check it objectively,  and anyway, for my purposes, I think I can live with it. I have noticed the same on my iPad 2 at times.

As someone else commented earlier when he was staring at the checkerboard image, perhaps I should check the warranty on my Mark I eyes ;)

You expect Apple to treat all customers in the same way, but apparently.. they don't.... it depends on your Apple Store.

@abacus01 You're right, I should of been more insistent on them replacing my machine instead of just the screen. I didn't ask for the manager.. which i should of. Next week I'll go again.. see if will work then. You know, I'd rather wait for Apple to acknowledge the problem, although the longer I wait, less chance there is that they'll replace the whole machine.

    Hi,

I was wondering, did anybody who had their screens exchanged, managed to get a Samsung screen? From some reports it seems like Apple has only LG as screen replacements...

Thanks, but what I meant was when people were exchanging screens-only (not whole units.

It looks like a few people reported IR on Samsung displays in this poll:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1422669&page=5

Defects can happen in any product, so it isn't surprising. But considering that the problem is far more common in LG displays, who wants to hold on to a product that has such a higher probability of developing defects? My first display was an LG, and it didn't show noticeable IR in the first week I had it. But I did notice the screen was darker and had poorer contrast when put side-by-side with a Samsung, so I decided to get a replacement. For such an expensive machine, nothing less than perfect will settle. I now have a replacement, also an LG, which sadly has the same contrast/brightness issues and was demonstrating IR within the first two days. I've already spoken with a management rep at Apple and told him I would be returning it within 14 days for a replacement. He agreed that was my only option (aside from getting a refund and reordering in a month) if I want to get a Samsung screen.

In any case, once you are past 14 days, you are locked in, and many see the issue appear after that. I see no reason to risk holding onto an LG when their problems are frequent and well-documented.

Well compared my ipad 2 and my rMBP (samsung screen) and it is clear the rMBP has a warmer white.

However, whether this is bad I don't know or whether it is the ipad that is too 'blue white'

This is driving me nuts. I have to purchase a MBP this weekend and still can't decide whether to get the Retina or not. I know its the future and all but these screen issues have me hesitant. Oh Steve how your missed.

Is it not possible to just open the boxes when purchasing in store and checking the display before leaving? If its not a Samsung then keep exchanging until it is lol?

If i were you Drandy...i'd return that rMBP..not trying to make you feel bad but it looks really yellow..not suppose to be like that...heres mine. The Ipad 3 on the left...the retina macbook pro on the right...

mine as mentioned is a Samsung screen...that is great...no yellowing at all...and my ipad is slightly yellower than that....but definitely have that exchanged and use my photo as an example...good luck

I haven't seen anyone here report receiving a Samsung screen replacement. It would be good to know if they ship Samsungs for those machines that originally had a Samsung. Though I'm afraid they are just shipping LGs for all replacements.
