Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I'm pretty much in the same boat as tingle3003.

Bought my rMBP on day 1...had ghosting issue.

Went to the Apple retail store...they confirmed the issue but just told me to contact AppleCare since there was nothign they could do about it in the store (really?).

Went through a few people at AppleCare before they finally approved a replacement. Unfortunately, it had the same problem. Confirmed it was LG/Sharp, but not sure about the first one.

However, all I can say is good luck with getting a second replacement since my request for one was denied. It sounds like they have confirmed the issue and they are working on a written public response to the issue, but that at this time they are no longer doing replacements (which they were doing before so they could get their hands on the problem computers and examine them). Nor are they approving repairs (swapping out the screen for a new one) at this time. Maybe they think they can come up with a firmware solution to the problem, or maybe they are waiting to figure out how to get all of the bad screens (on new computers and stocked for repairs) out of the supply chain before they finally decide what to do next.

I was told that their public written response to the situation will be released in the near future and that I should keep searching this site for it. It may also be updated over time as they get more information, so even if they initially say they won't replace/repair the screen, that could change in the future if they can't come up with a firmware fix for it.

I'm also concerned about a repair (screen replacement) for the same reasons...with my prior MBP (the last pre-Unibody model), each time they took it apart, there were problems after they put it back together (gaps in the casing, fans making noise and later failing, etc), and since it wasn't covered by AppleCare, they wanted to charge me for problems that resulted form their shoddy work. They kept telling me that most laptops have these issues (failing batteries, failing fans, failing motherboards) after a couple of years so problems like those should be expected, which is why I should have bought AppleCare.

I think the new MBPs are designed much better and "should" be more sturdy, but based on past experiences with Apple Service, I'm very paranoid they'll screw something else up in the process of replacing the screen.

You should get a replacement because the one that you have doesn't work. Get a new one and don't agree with repair not now not ever.

There is no reason to repair and change the LCD for a few-day old machine! Repair is for old machine. Do the repair in your third year not in your third day.

    good luck

I receive my replacement today (at least the courier tracking system seems to think so).

I will post back as soon as I have had a chance to test it out. Really hope it's a good one as (with this being my first Mac) I am actually very impressed with the machine. The cominbation of OSX and Win7 (via VMware) is really great and I feel the hardware is very good in general.

Such a shame that things like this slip through QC because it can really marr an otherwise great experience. However, it must be a small number of units experiencing this issue as they must have shipped thousands of these units and not everyone is complaining about it.

Stuff like this can happen and I guess we just need to be realistic...

I haven't seen any post in here regarding any problems with rMBPs built on week 30 or after, which is awesome news.

I think it's safe to assume that the rate of failure.. is significantly lower if not nil at the moment. Good job guys, if anything pops up with IR, please post it here.

Mine is week 30, 999th built that week, and I have image persistence. Unfortunately, it's an LG screen. My replacement is on its way, so hopefully it will be a samsung with Mountain Lion already on it. I'll post my results when I receive it.

I'm still waiting on my replacement too. I was told it would arrive "by the end of week", but it's now Friday and Apple's site says it hasn't even shipped yet... so that was a lie.

After all this trouble, my replacement had REALLY better not have the ghosting issue, or I will be furious.

My replacement has arrived and it has a Samsung screen. I am just in the process of carrying out a test and will report back shortly.

It's great. I have a Samsung screen and no IR issue but I'm still watching for it in the screen everyday I'm interested to see how your Samsung works.

    I hope is the one.

    Right.

It seems the replacement is good. The Samsung screen seems to look a little richer and there does not seem to me any IR in my testing so far. I will keep an eye on it and report back if anything changes.

First impressions are that it's sorted. If you don't hear back from me then assume "no news is good news".

I just got my shipment notification on a 2.3/16gb model. I pray to god it has the samsung screen as I will be replacing my Mid 2011 MBA/ Late 2009 2.8 i7 iMac combination with just this computer. I will keep the iMac around for a little while to use as an external, before giving it to my dad.

I swear if I have LG/Sharp screen, I'll just scream at the top of my lungs, call back to them and say that I want an advanced replacement on the rMBP cause of image retention.

I guess there is no way to tell what screen you have just based on the serial  #? I've heard no other mention of Samsung supplying these panels anywhere else on the web but in this thread.

You guys think that it's basically the LG screens = crap versus the Samsung? I wonder if you can request a new system specifically with the Samsung screen if you end up with this issue and it happens to be an LG screen.
