Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I also went to the Apple Store in Amsterdam today, they did hear of the problem and its true they didn't want to replace the Macbook. They did offer a repair to me, appereantly there was just a bad batch of LG screens and the newer ones are IR free, but he couldn't promise me that the new screen would be IR free.

Instead I should just return it again if the IR problems occured again, that would be the third time...

I didn't want to wait 7-10 days for a repair and so they managed to repair the macbook on the same day, unfortunately I'm having a LG screen again and I can already see the IR.

I'm very dissappointed in Apple, in 2 months I had 3 screens on my Macbook and nothing has been fixed yet. I dont know what to do anymore I just want my money back and buy another Macbook Pro with retina display if these problems are finally fixed.

Majority of people don't have problems, even though we like to think that they just don't notice.

I like how you're basing that on exatly... nothing.

just like people here have been saying " pretty much, if not all, LG screens are effected"

So this is a computer that is on 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, for at least 70+ days.

Which is way more than anyone with a life could use a computer. So we are talking 840 hours. about 30% of which is probably idle. (no one was using the PC when i got there, or when i left)

Given the screen had no IR, i can only assume the screen was not faulty. Remember that the laptop has been there since launch.

For all we know, it might just have been put in there the day before. It's hard to tell. Also, it's not duration of system being on but actual usage of the display that counts. The Best Buy I go to is always empty. The MBPs in Apple Store would be a much better test since Apple Stores are always busy and people actually use the laptops.

However, it is interesting that some people appear to get 3 of these things with the same problem.

This is the key. I have never gone through three replacements of the same product suffering the exact same issue. And there are dozens of people on this thread, some with up to 6-7 replacements all having IR. This is not statistically possible with normal defective rates.

Add that to the fact that Samsungs don't have IR and we got an answer.

    several keys points:

-if IR is the problem, an image remaining untouched for 5+ minutes will certainly cause the issue, basically, for IR to occur, in most cases, there must be a static image for at least a few minutes (normally), so for anyway from 5 to 60 minutes static, often, then the problem should occur. The PC is running all the time, under a 5-10% load (which is enough to show usage, especially on the screen)

    - that is the same macbook that has been sitting there for weeks, i promise you, ive looked at it several times and anyone who says otherwise is just being ********. They would not sell the display because then it won't raise interest in the device.

    - one must take the information given on here carefully, some trolls will hunt out stuff like this and post BS to hit apple.

    - given than only about 1000-2000 people from around the world have posted issues out of probably a million now

    - additionally, clearly there is some issue here, to the extend, remains to be seen; however, you are right that it is a serious issue and apple needs to get their **** together

So far my retina with LG screen is doing okay, i plan to get a game and try to test it out and run it hard to ensure that its good to go

Both Apple’s U.S. phone support and the Genius at the Apple Store I went to today claimed that Apple has done “a lot of research”, that this is “expected behavior”, and that I should make sure that my Energy Saver settings are set at the defaults since that will “help”. (It should go without saying, this does not actually help anything.) The Genius offered to order a replacement screen to make me happy, but insisted that it wouldn’t solve the problem because it is “normal”.

This machine is a Week 26 machine with an LG panel. After displaying a checkboard test image for 1 minute, I get 3 minutes 30 seconds of retention before I cannot see it any more. If something has been displayed for longer (say, a web browser, where the top of the window always stays the same), then the ghost image remains for even longer, upwards of 4 minutes (I got bored and stopped waiting). This problem has been getting progressively worse over time; the ghost images are becoming more pronounced and lasting for longer.

But that doesn't explain why so many people in this thread if have had the screens replaced mutiple times, and IR keeps coming back. Yes, a bad batch could be possible, but then most people would only need one or maybe 2 replacemtens screens, and all issues be fixed..

A instance of extreme IR is not expected behavior.  If it was the case that it shows up faintly after 20 minutes, thats one thing, but only a minute sounds like a several other instances in this thread of the staff should make a effort to determine the cause and if needed replace whats necessary to fix it for you.

So exchanged my 2nd MBP for a 3rd one. So that's 5 displays now, all LG, and all show signs of IR.

I suck at the Samsung lottery.

Some people return panels because of any instance of IR or other defects.   Take for example someone who has IR in 5 minutes, next takes 20 minutes, next has a slight yellow tint, next has pressure points (samsung), next is a another LG and just because of that he's had enough.  Sound familar?

I saw a little IR after 20 minutes initially (LG) , now its no longer there after a initial usage no matter what I do?  I had two MPBr's both LG's.   But neither had really any issues.  (changed out first one, due I wanted a better config offered 4 weeks later on base model)

Probably because 3/4 of them out there are LG.

So what are you saying, IR gets less after a while?????

I seriously have no issue, whatsoever to replace the screen if that is garantee that the next screen is perfect, ok maybe 2.. to be on the safe side. or for sure if they say it would be a samsung screen.. but some of the posters here, if not majority of them weren't so lucky..

maybe time to ask for a replacement or refund??? Exactly the reason why I don't want to get my screen replaced..

In my instance yes, when I first ran the Safari on a dark grey background it showed some faint IR after 20 minutes or so.  Not so much anymore.  The checkboard test offered here really is not a worst case test, you could run that pattern for a hour and not see anything.  IMHO there are instances of IR mentioned here that need to be resolved, but without any factual feedback against this topic from Apple it left quite a few people declaring that shotgunning panels is the answer.  Whats happen now, is all the people that swap panels for any little issue, have now made it tougher for the customer with a real issue IMHO to get support from Apple.
