Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Not thoughtful to post the managers name who helped you, probably hurt another's chance at getting the same support and the poor guy might get reprimanded

I'm expecting mine to arrive this week. Custom order. If I have an LG display I'll be returning it for a full refund without bothering to test it!   For the amount of money I'm spending on this laptop its unacceptable to be recieving components that are known to have major issues with a high number of users.

I've searched the internet and ran into multiple forums and blogs reporting this issue well before I placed my order. I've yet to see Apple respond to these claims with a plan of action to take care of the issue.

I guess I have 14 days, I'll use 7 days tops and report back here either way. Although I'll know first day how the story will end.

Well folks, it's time for me to update my ongoing issues with the plague of my life as an Apple fanboy: the dreaded LG displays, part three.

Let's recap what happened first (message 1 of 3):

1st LG screen, from late June, yellowish and very bad image retention.

    from Terminal:

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN22220UU5DMJ0AS

manufacturing date unknown (forgot to check Display properties)

    Exhibit 1: test image

    IMG_2458.JPG

    Exhibit 2: image retention

    IMG_2460.JPG

Exhibit 3: compare yellow screen of LG display on rMBP with the perfect white point of my Apple Cinema Display from 2010

    IMG_2468.JPG

Noticed in late July, found this thread, then went on three trips to Apple Store Montreal to diagnose problem, wait for display replacement to be available at the store and drop in the rMBP, and finally pick the same laptop with a new display. Overall, an unpleasant experience.

Message 2 of 3: the IR Strikes Back

2nd LG screen, from early August, yellowish and somewhat bad image retention.

    from Terminal:

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN22940ZXJDMJ0AA

    manufacturing date: C9CE8C80

Exhibit 1: test image using my fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) statistical analysis software on top of Matlab, a line of work with *very* cricital reliance on information visualization in the way of 3D toplogical mappings of brain areas... So the IR issue is pretty much a worst case scenario for this line of work...

    test.jpg

    Exhibit 2: image retention

    IMG_2478.JPG

Exhibit 3: image retention (another take with different lighting)

    IMG_2485 rev.jpg

Exhibit 4: image retention (with original chessboard test image)

    IMG_2492 rev.jpg

Exhibit 5: compare (again) yellow screen of LG display on rMBP with the perfect white point of my Apple Cinema Display from 2010

    IMG_2489.JPG

Noticed a week later... Another three trips to Apple Store Montreal to diagnose problem, wait for display replacement to be available at the store and drop in the rMBP, and finally pick the same laptop with a new display. Challenge rating: angry mode.

Message 3 of 3: the Return of the Revenge of the IR

3rd LG screen, from late August, yellowish and somewhat bad image retention.

    from Terminal:

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN2316023TDMJ0A1

manufacturing date: C9CE8C80 (aka same crappy batch as the one before)

Exhibit 1: test image for 3rd LG panel

    IMG_2522.JPG

Exhibit 2: test at 5 minutes on the first day

    IMG_2518.PNG

    IMG_2520.JPG

    (Nothin', yay !)

Exhibit 3: test at 10 minutes on the first day

    IMG_2521.PNG

    IMG_2523.JPG

    (Nothin', yay !)

Exhibit 4: test at 15 minutes on the first day

    IMG_2524.PNG

    IMG_2527.JPG

Verdict on first day: *some* faint image retention by 15 minutes...

... and then, today, so one week later approx.:

Exhibit 5: test image using high contrast images randomly chosen on the internets.

    IMG_2531.JPG

Exhibit 6: image retention, this elephant in the room which won't go away

    IMG_2532.JPG

Exhibit 7: image retention (another take with focus on large white image)

    IMG_2533.JPG

(Provisional) conclusion at this time: Very, very annoyed mode. Here's to another three trips and many days of delay for a fourth bloody yellow LG display and image retention?

Hey Apple, when do I win the Samsung lottery, seriously?

See you the day after Labour Day, Apple Store...

Thanks for the update Dr Sly -- I am afraid the same thing is going to happen to me, I am just going to continue to get custom 16GB rMBPs sent until finally I get a Samsung screen. You would think Apple would learn not to use LG after the iPad2 and macbook air quality issues.

Congrats on getting your Samsung display.

Having a system where Apple employees can look up the display manufacturer for rMBP inside a sealed box isn't a good thing for the customers. I would imagine that the Apple employees would cherry pick all the rMBP with Samsung displays for themselves, family, and friends. This may explain why people who do an exchange are getting 6+ LG displays in a row

I finally got my Samsung screen, though, under unoptimal conditions. I initially purchased a 2.6/16/512 from the online education store. After two faulty LG replacements (total of three faulty laptops), I decided to organize a refund. I also found myself visiting my uncle today. While at lunch, I told him about my problems with the LG rMBPs. Infuriated, he walked me over to the Apple store (where he knows all employees by name, and receives good treatment as a longtime frequent shopper). He directed me to an assitant manager, who confirmed the existance of Ripley, but was unsure about whether it could be used to look up the individual components of a MacBook by serial number. He found a random top of the line rMBP in stock, and entered the serial number. Nothing came up. He then searched one of the base models (and the serial number for my current rMBP), which both showed that the LCDs had a supplier code of LGP (or something similar). I asked if he could look up some more high end models, and he eventually found a computer that had SEC (which I reasoned was Samsung Electronics Corporation) as the LCD supplier. He brought it out, and I bought it right there on my educational discount. Upon taking it home, my SEC hypothesis was confirmed with a Samsung screen! I tested and found no IR, and I'll be sending my LG back on Tuesday. Unfortunately, I had to pay $700 extra for the top of the line model, because retail stores don't carry anything between a 2.6/8/512 and a 2.7/16/756. Before sending my LG in, I'll take some pictures comparing the brightness and white points of the two computers.

    ------------------------------

    BOTTOM LINE:

Ripley exists. According to the manager, "Using Ripley to search for a laptop that contains a specific component is not considered kosher." However, he reasoned that at that price I deserved a perfect screen, and that it was better than continually returning laptops (also agreed with why I would no longer trust a seemingly good LG screen). Note that a few laptops don't have Ripley data, but some/most do. SEC is the Samsung supplier code. I hope that this helps people.

I'm getting my 2nd replacement rMBP (3rd computer) today. I will report as soon as I test it, but my hopes for a non-IR LG or Samsung are very very low. Seems like Apple decided to fix  the problem by blessing everybody with IR, so now nobody can feel inferior than other rMBP owners...
