Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Day three with my replacement system with LG panel (the system has been powered on 24hrs per day with the screen active).

On the first day I did  get a faint IR effect. For it to happen I had a high contrast image up for over 20 minutes. The effect was gone within one minute (in normal use you absolutely wouldn't notice, so that's ok for me). Also the icons on the desktop where faintly burnt-in, but also that effect was gone within a minute (which was absolutely not the case with my first LG).

Now for the weird thing: I cannot allways recreate the effect. I can put up a high contrast picture for hours but most of the times there is absolutely no sign of image retention whatsoever. However sometimes it does occur (but fortunatelly still very faint).

I get the feeling there are some other factors that need to be present for the IR to happen (like for example ambient temperature... when it happend to my previous MBPr  it was over 35C).

Good news is that the new macbook can be returned within 14 days should the problem occur.

Actually I have the same problems described here in this thread. Got 2 rMBPs,all with image retention, now Apple decided to just swap the display of my last rMBP with a new display and guess what, the replacement display is also an LG. I told the genius "well, we'll see each other next week again." He was quite baffled.

Anyhow, I have a real yellow tint with this LG display. Actually I am pretty much ****** off...

I paid 3128 Euros for this machine (2,6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) and the display issues go on and on...

I am gonna wait a couple of days until I guess IR will come by .. and then I will go there again. It's such a waste of time.

@stecube: would like to know that as well..

    My rMBP finally arrived today.

Week 35 build, LG screen. However the screen looks perfectly fine - brightness is great, and it doesn't have that awful yellow tint. No IR that I could see either, however I will keep an eye on it as it sounds like that is a problem that progressively appears.

Overall initial impressions are very, very good. Was blown away by the screen on first boot!

Well I am dropping off here now.

I wrote an email to Tim Cook (including a link to this forum) and got a reply from the EMEIA Executive Relations that they want to discuss it with me. But in the meantime I had already arranged a refund as I have a yellow patch in the corner of my Samsung screen, and though I tried to ignore it, it annoys me in a laptop costing £2300.

I will consider buying another one once Apple get their Quality Control sorted for their Retina Screens,

Good luck to those of you sticking with it.

Apple told me today, no change, no display repair, its a fault in software, but nobody can tell me when and how they are going to solve it. And nobody knows if its really a fault in software. So maybe they will never solve the problem.

Who did you speak to? Don't accept this nonsense from first-line AppleCare support technicians, they do not know about this issue. Ask to speak to Senior Applecare Advisor (over the phone) or if you can demonstrate an issue in store, ask to speak to a manager.

And . . . . . . . here it comes again! After just 2 days I noticed very very slight IR. I have to say I'm looking for it since it's my third LG display, so I have to admit it wouldn't be noticed under normal circumstances. But it's starting like on my 2nd display. You can see the bottom border of the Google Chrome page and if I hide the dock, you can barely see the Photoshop icon.

I'll keep monitoring the situation, but I'm already planning another phone call and a new trip to the Apple Store . . .

If it was a software problem it would be consistent from day one and wouldn't get worse over time!

Keep trying Applecare, maybe I just got lucky, but I only spoke to 2 different Senior AppleCare Advisors and they both acknowledge that they've gotten reports about the issue (although they don't have any official solutions).

I have an advice for all the intellects and bright brains posting their queries on this discussion Forum.Guys what I personally feel is that although we have paid a fortune to get this high tech multimedia mogul in our possession we shouldn't be getting it replaced every now and then by having a game of Russian roulet with ourselves every time we open the pandoras box.A good percentage of Retina displays are manufactured by LG,Samsung only acts as a backup option for the guys at Cupertino when LG fails to hit the required rate of mass production.Though LG is plagued by the problem of image retention I have seen and heard a lot of People to be pleased and exhuberant about their respective panels for the kind of Images,Brightness or whatever they personally cherished about that respective characteristic.

Returning the rMBP will not only be an utter turning of all of our valuable time in ash but would go on turning out before possession excitement into graves and corpse.I personally don't think we should ignore the high points of Apples notebook and all of us bought it cause it does have and occupies a very distinctive position in today's market cause of the ultra beautiful display and design specifications it comes with.

I personally want every person on this forum to get their machine in the best possible form but incase if people out here are do getting their prints on the LG display they shouldn't be disheartened like I was when I first posted my parable.I do feel that the retina display IR issue has a very imperceptible effect on people but if it doesn't the whole world is yours to get your stuff changed or replaced.

Plus I just wanted to ask whether if anybody out here has visualised retention having the second beta of Osx 10.8.2.
