Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thanks for the screen shots.  I can see Google on the close up. Thanks again....

Is it only visible on plain background colors?   I mean, not trying to down play it, it shouldn't happen. Especially for a high-end laptop.  How bad is it, say when navigating pages on a website. Can you see the last page on the current one?

Honestly I haven't tested it enough in the 'real world' testing. I was too angry after this simple test. Probably you would notice it in normal Internet browsing but who knows how much worse it might get over time. Besides there are certain situations in which you can't afford any shadows, ghosts, retention. Like working on graphics, photos...Imagine 'removing' one pixel on an image in Photoshop and having it still visibly stuck for next 5 mins.

Maybe I could live with it if Apple announced that it's a feature and thats what you should expect before buying it. But they don't and with Samsungs its not happening...

Its most visible when using a solid color such as a dark grey, maybe a dark blue, you can flip to any number of desktop pictues even similar shading and not see it on the ones I've seen.   If you were opening up multiple safari windows on top of the galaxy background image forget about it.

    Try this?

    http://www.ehow.com/how_7667881_fix-image-persistence-lcd-tvs.html

Read it on another site also, basically cycling two solid screen colors I think, white and black.

I think this link is most useful...

    http://lifehacker.com/146469/remove-lcd-image-burn+in

    See 2nd comment...

"After a week, none of the methods seemed to help, but I finally found one that worked within 8 hours. Simply use the default Flurry screen saver that comes with your Mac, with all the settings turned to max in the 'Options' pane. This seems to give all the pixels on the LCD a thorough exercise, and fixed my image persistence overnight."

not sure how this helps retina displays, worth a shot?

The genius went through 30 minutes and got permission to let me pay for an upgrade to the model they have in stock. However, the manager refused to look up Ripley even for just 1 box. I eventually decided to skip the upgrade and wait for a solution from Apple. The store did create a case for me verifying the problem. They asked me to give AppleCare a call and see if they can arrange for a Samsung screen which is highly doubtful.

It seems to run the gamut, as far as how bad it is. On mine, I keep my wallpaper set to cycle through Apple's default wallpapers, changing every half hour. I can see the IR on most of the wallpapers. I can usually read IR text across the bright center of the galaxy on the default ML wallpaper, for example. I can see the outline of my formerly opened windows on most of them as well.

In my experience, any solid colours of about that darkness (+ or - a few shades) will reveal image retention. I've seen it very clearly on the solid graphics of some websites (i.e. flightaware.com, my DNS-323 NAS drives web page) and even on the frames and tabs of application GUIs. I've also noticed that it's gotten worse on my rMBP. I can even see it on many of the picture backgrounds that come with Mac OS X, including the Galaxy picture and the night sky background pic. It's gross and it has really ruined the experience for me. Honestly, I was so pumped to get this laptop and now I just hope that none of my Windows friends ask me about it when we're hanging out, because I hate lying.

Sorry man.  If I have any issues with mine that arrives this week, I'll probably return it and get the regular mac book pro (non-retina). I'd say try warranty until you get a good version.

Are some people mad enough that they would buy a 2K-4K $ computer with an obvious FLAW, and be convinced to WAIT for some UNDISCLOSED PERIOD OF TIME for an UNDISCLOSED SOLUTION WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT WORK anyways?

    Madness.

Well, for those of us past the 14 day "no questions asked" return period (which is, I think, most on these forums), I don't see what the difference is between fighting now for a replacement when Apple hasn't come up with a fix or a coherent means for addressing the problem, and waiting a month for a possible smoother replacement experience, since we all will have Applecare for a minimum of 9 - 12 more months.  I don't personally see why Apple would be any less beholden to fix the problem a month or two from now than they are now, since I will have Applecare coverage then too.  And in the meantime, the image retention issue is very minor for me; although it is easy for me to reproduce, I have to use artificial environments (flat color backgrounds that I wouldn't normally use).  So I'll wait to make things easier on myself and Apple.  Although I do hope that they don't run out of Samsung displays and I never manage to get one because I waited ...

Hey guys, if you're uncomfortable with Terminal, can't remember the command, or just too plain lazy to type it in every time, I've made a compact little app to check your screen manufacturer. You can download it here. I worked a lot on the icon . Thanks!

For my own sanity, and it terms of practicality, I'm taking a similiar approach. Even if I was within my 14-day window, I would not want to play this game of rMBP roulette, because the odds appear to suck. To be honest, I'd be satisified with a new Samsung display (or guaranteed good LG display) installed in my rMBP within a month or two. That being said, we really need to keep pushing Apple on this and we to try to get some visibility in the wider media. Apple needs to fix this.
