Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Slightly off topic, but I have started to think about alternatives, incase Apple never resolves these LG screen issues to my liking. Being that this should have been my first mac, I could live with another pc and Windows if I have to. Anyway, the first preview of the new Samsung series 9 with 'retina' display and a gorgeous MATT screen looks pretty appealing...

I was all set to switch to OSX and looking forward to it (having used mac at work the last year). But honestly, I'd rather have a laptop I'm 110% happy with, even if that means I won't be able to go formac in the end. Just ****** me off, cos I should be able to but to laptop I want for over £2000! Insane!

To offer some hope to people still waiting, I ordered mine (2.6/16/512) on 27th August, and it arrived today. Week 36 built, Samsung screen, appears flawless. The difference between it and my Late-2010 Air's LG display is stunning.

This looks good news, the sudden surge in samsung screens around the week 35 mark could possibly indicate Apple have thrown out the LG's. Good luck everyone, after 3 hours of using mine I love it.

As a switching windows user myself, i could easily deal with staying with windows. Hardware wise, that laptop looks nice, but windows 8 looks just ******** to me. I love the current window XP, 7 interface and think windows 8 is just a complete piece of c rap.

Anyway, my macbook pro retina is a week old.

Ordered August 18th in the usa. (LG screen)

I have done about 8 tests.

I just ran one, and for 60 minutes. I get NO IR. As far as the color goes, whites seems really white, blacks are about what you expect from a LCD.

Additionally, the brightness on this laptop is waay better than my old Dell and overall is just too much, at most itll go up to 3/4 and thats enough.

I can't say i am disappointed in the laptop yet.

However, if the LG display gives me trouble. I will demand a replacement screen (i don't care if my PC is repaired, plus i alrdy bootcamped windows 7 and am installing school stuff) and i will demand a samsung screen. (not ask, demand)

So I dropped by the Apple store today. A cool employee offered to ask the back store employees

if they could check the ripley system. The said it would still require opening the box to see whether or not the display is LG or Samsung. The Manager I spoke to prior said he had no idea about ripley. Seems like everyone has a different story. Anyway he said he could give me a month option to return NQA.

I just want a **** laptop without having to worry about issues which is the only thing

    making me hesitate.

p.s Anyone with the IR issues from Canada? The mgr they haven't had any returns for IR

Mine is a week 35 model which arrived yesterday. Has an LG screen (LP after the terminal command is an LG screen, right?), yet is great. No yellow tone (infact my mid-2010 iMac seems to have warmer whites!), no dead pixels, and most importantly - no IR so far (after around 1 and a half days constant use).

Also thankfully arrived with no cosmetic defects, which seems to have affected a lot of people.

Blown away by the screen so far, better than anything else I have used.

    Hi Transfix,

I'm from Canada, and there are others on here was well.

Let me know how it goes with the Apple Store. What location is it anyway?

I really hope its just a bad batch of LGs, only time will truely tell because my first retina with LG screen got to the point of me noticing after 2+ months and was getting progressively worse.

Not that I have a refund, I am giving one more go at ordering a 16GB custom retina....hopefully its a Sammy and not a whammy

I got mine on July 3rd, didn´t notice the problem at first but I am pretty sure that it got worse as then I only noticed it on dark grey background and now the background doesn´t really matter anymore.

I just called the support and they told me that it is "within the specification" and nothing they can help me with other than waiting until maybe some day apple decides that it really is a problem...

I´ll give it another month and hope that the problem is than that bad that it definatly is not acceptable anymore.

I'm just glad that Apple doesn't make cars or control systems for planes.

Long time reader, first time poster.

Let me start that I don't doubt at all about the IR problems, and that I do feel and understand your pain totally. You spent a fortune on the holy grail and you get holy fail

But we should put some things in perspective. There is no doubt the LG's have IR problems and Samsung doesn't and that is a valid reason to wish for a Samsung. However I don't believe the image quality of the Samsungs are better. I have a rMBP (week 33) with Samsung screen myself but I return it because after a few days dead pixels start to apear. At first I thought it was a flawless amazing screen, but with more observation the white's are not totally even and it isn't "perfect". Before I received my Samsung screen I have bin to all Apple Stores to compare the screens and I am one of the not so many who likes the LG better. The LG seems less vivid and has less brightness. But in my eyes the LG has more contrast (don't confuse contrast with brightness, the Samsungs look brighter and more vivid but that isn't better per see) The LG has more natrual whites in my opinion and more contrast.

There is a reason why Apple uses more LG's and the Samsung as back-up. Apple advertise with IPS screens. Theoretically only the LG's are real IPS screen's. And the ones in the retina are the latest best AH-IPS versions. Supose to be superior screens used in high-end monitors. I don't believe the LG's are a budget choice and/or cheaper then the Samsungs. The Samsung LPS technology is said to be a cheaper alternative to IPS.

If enough people say that the Samsung is "superior" it is what we start to believe and assume as truth. I don't believe it is truth.

The Samsung's also suffer poor quality control. Many had dead pixels, backlight bleed. but yeah no IR.

However above post puts IR's asside, it was pure bout screen quality. IR is a bad issue and not acceptable in this form. I wish everybody good luck.

they are right, maybe they haven't had any returns for IR, that is because they didn't allow me to do that. No replace for the screen, no replace for the item and for sure no return.

And by the way, I'm in Toronto

This is why I am afraid to drop the money on the rMBP. I have no interest in going through what happened to you. I need a new MB badly but I know if I grab the cMBP a couple of months down the road I'll be kicking myself.

    What a dilemma !

Has anyone received a BTO in past week with a Samsung display, ordered after August 20?

Was going to place order today and see if I get a Samsung on a BTO 2.7/16/512...
