Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Interesting. Why are they using different manufacturers with different technologies in the same product??? And it is not LPS its PLS (plane to line switching). Samsung is using PLS screens which is why they are noticeably different to the LGs IPS (in plane switching)...wow. Wonder if that is why IR is not a problem as well? Doesn't PLS have deeper blacks, better color reproduction and better viewing angle than IPS displays? I was completely unaware of any of this information.

Now I am thinking I need to cancel my order and just wait for the OLED retina that comes out next year.

Sorry you right, PLS. I remember one of the forum member on Mac Rumors, measured both Samsung and LG with a color meter, and it turned out that the LG was far more acurate (nearly pefect) in white balans.

I've also got the LG display with the image retention problem, though not extremely bad. Production week: 33 (August)

Unfortunately I don't have a local Apple store to deal with... It's my main work machine so it will suck if I need to go without for a few days while it's repaired. It's also a custom build-to-order from Apple.com.

I spoke with a tech at the local authorized reseller, he hadn't seen this issue yet but had a customer with the flicker issue. Apple shipped them a new screen and they repaired the machine in-house, this took 3 days. He suggested I talk to Apple support directly first... So I'll be doing that soon.

I loved my first screen that was an LG, its just IR was so bad I actually noticed it to the point of googling 'ghost' with macbook pro retina and finding this thread amongst others. I didn't have to change my background to grey. Maybe that screen was from a bad batch idk. The replacement screen is at least 2 bars brightness less than the first one and shows IR but faintly and not nearly as long, but I am suspecting it will get worse in time. I know Samsungs have other problems which is why I wish I never sold my old 2009 mbp and just could wait another year for the IGZO retina mbp but now I need a computer. I just don't want to have to continue to replace this screen every two months because the IR is so bad that you can read my email on the lock screen.

Yes, there are a few of us in Canada who posted on this forum thread so far, and have IR on LG displays.

I'm on my third LG display, all yellow, all IR...

Is there no possible way of verifying which display panel it is by the serial number on the box?

It would be a pain to keep buying and returning until you get a samsung.

To offer some hope to people still waiting, I ordered mine (2.6/16/512) on 27th August, and it arrived today. Week 36 built, Samsung screen, appears flawless. The difference between it and my Late-2010 Air's LG display is stunning.

I also just received a new BTO today (Sept 4) and it's a terrible LG display, so while there's hope it's most definitely still a gamble.

I'm moving on to something different but best of luck to everyone.

Just received my third LG rMBP purchase today.  Tested it for IR, confirmed it still to be a problem.  Placed an order for the 4th.  I'll keep doing this until I get a display without an IR issue.

Interesting, I notice every keyboard on these things have a little bit different touch to them.  Whatever.  I'll update again in 2 weeks.

Just got a call from someone in response to my email to Tim Cook. He gave me a case number and made an appointment for me to visit my local store to have the screen looked at in person, and said he'd be following up the day after my appointment. I guess we'll see what happens. Though, honestly, having Apple respond like that has made me feel a little better already. Hopefully something good will come of it.

I was probably very lucky and I hope everyone else also will be soon, but I've ordered two mac book pro. The first one (base retina model with 512GB SSD) had a samsung screen. I called apple on the phone telling how I needed more RAM/performance and so I received a second, upgraded one, which also had a samsung screen.

I was going to play the samsung display roulette, but fortunately it was quick enough. A bit more patience and you should have it (at least this confirms they do produce them). Week 35 for the second one.

I can't believe this is your 4th order? I'm giving it one more go than I am just going to get a regular mbp until the next retina comes out. I am getting concerned this a widespread problem because of how Apple is handling this problem. If it were only a couple thousand of units being affected, the simple solution would be to get those that have these problems a display made by Samsung. We know the store managers can look up the serial numbers to get this info, why not just do this and make those few that have this problem happy??? But that isn't happening, Instead apple let's its loyal customers go through multiple (3-7 on average in this thread) machines returning them in the process until they finally get a Samsung. And this has been going on for a month? It doesn't add. Still no official statement?

On another note, anyone get a Toshiba SSD??

    My 256GB is a Samsung

My last replacement had a bit wobbly CMD/CTRL keys. This one has a very nasty shift (feels like not really bouncing back after being pressed).

I went to the Doncaster store. I exchange the LG one because I just need a guarantee that this IR issue isn't going to happen after 14 days period.
