Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

So we are on the same boat, let's see how Apple Europe handles this type of problems. I'm waiting for the decision of sending me my 4th rMPB (3rd replacement).

Not sure if this is just coincidence but yesterday I stopped by a local Futureshop and ran the DD app on the 2 retina demo models and both were Samsung. Has anyone purchased their retina from Future? If so are they Samsungs?

I had that first gen intel MBP that overheated and it took them 1 year and 2 replacements to get it right....the last replacement was the next generation and its still running today.  It's been an amazing MBP.

When you first purchase a TV (or Mac Book with Retina), there is a "break-in" period.

This period is around 250 hours.

You should NOT leave static images on the screen for 30 minutes or more during this period of time.

    "Burn-in" is PERMANANT

    "Image-Retention" is TEMPORARY

I have an LG and I have had ZERO issues, through normal usage.

Use a screensaver and set it up to start in 2 minutes and avoid static screens.

    Hope this helps.

Most of the demo rMBPs in storej are always on, considering the fact that it's been over 2 months that this product has been released those laptops have easily had 250+ hours of display time, but  users still report they see IR on the demo laptops in store and it's worse than what they see on their machine :|

I just came from the Apple store and after testing the Apple homepage for 20min on the demo laptops (no display sleep, 100%brightness and both LG's) there was IR but after 1-2 min it was completely gone.

As yougameplay said Burn-in is permanent and IR is not. I even get IR on my gen 1 ipad that goes after a min.

That's describes me exactly. Now...I don't even want to discuss the "superiority" of Apple products with anyone. My confidence is shaken.

For those that have just bought or are about to buy one of these laptops:

Do yourself a favor and be very vigilant about checking your screen for IR before your 14 day return period is up! If you find you have IR (even slight) simply return it for a refund and then buy a new one. Don't accept a repair or an exchange. The reason is simple: If you return and buy a new one you reset your return clock and if Apple decides on a response that is unacceptable to you then you can still get your money back. That's why Apple has the return policy; they want you to be completely satisfied at purchase time.

On the other hand if you go the exchange or repair route then your time to return runs out and you could be stuck with a laptop with IR that gets worse and worse over time and Apple telling you that it's "normal" and there's nothing they will do about it.

I realize that there are some people with new laptops with LG panels saying that it looks great and they don't see any (or very little) IR yet. The problem is that this is a problem that gets gradually worse over time. I didn't notice the IR on my first rMBP until well after my return period because I wasn't looking for it. By the time I noticed it it had gotten so bad that it was painfully obvious during normal work and on my normal wallpaper. I was very fortunate that when I took it in to the store they said "that's not right" and offered to refund my money so that I could buy an upgraded version with a bigger SSD. However, from what I read here, Apple is no longer allowing most people to return these laptops outside of the return period because of the IR issue. I was even told personally at an Apple store that they would no longer allow repairs for this as IR is actually considered by them to be "normal."

I have since had two more replacement laptops with LG displays. In both cases the LG started off looking perfect for the first week or so but developed IR slowly in the second week! I checked them carefully every day so I can say for a fact that they were perfect on day one and that it does indeed get worse every day. I didn't want to take any chances that I might get stuck with a problem that gets worse and worse I returned both of them.

I gave up for a few weeks and went back to my previous MBP from last year but the reports of more Samsung panels shipping has encouraged my to try again so I just ordered another custom rMBP. I hope I win the lottery this time.

The macbook pro retina at the best buy back home had a laptop with a LG display.

I tested it for only 5 minutes or so but showed NO IR

i figure that laptop was on closer to 500-800 hours since it has been there.
