Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Well have had my LG screen since Friday and in heavy use.  So far (knock on wood), I haven't had any IR or other problems.  All working good (haven't tried USB 3 because I don't have a drive).  I will keep checking periodically for the IR problem.  Hopefully I will be one of the lucky 100, 000 or so users that haven't had a problem with their LG macbook screens.

I'm a Mac developer and I will refuse to optimize my apps for Retina Display unless Apple gives us an official annonucement and solution to resolve the Image Retention issue.

Please refer to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4271425 for details.

You won't see it for about 1 month. That is what happened to me. It's not as bad as it's happening to others here.

The USB 3.0 is absolutely amazing.

    Enjoy your computer.

Apple will be pressed to resolve the issue... probably no accepting publicly, but at least behind curtains.

I don't believe the editors at Engaget were not aware of this issue, cause it has been months. So I guess Apple might need a little bit more pressure from the real target users of the Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

Their apps helped apple's App Store succeed and they deserve a normal machine for work.

To all Mac developers in the world:

I believe some of you have been suffured from the so called "image retention", "ghost image", "IR" or "display burn-in" issue recently on your new Macbook Pro with Retina Display.

If you still don't know what "Image Retention" is, please refer to this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4034848?start=0&tstart=0 for details.

And I bet, just like me, most of you are still playing the weekly Retina Lottery and Exchange-PingPong game with Apple desperitely, but will never know when you will receive an IR-free machine, so that you can put your fingers on your keyboard to develop your lovely codes, instead of keeping them crossed for a "prefect" machine and god knows when you will get it.

Apple has introduced the concept of Retina Display on iPhone and iPad and the content consumers were amazed by the high-resolution brought by the Retina Display.

However, in the meantime, the content consumers also requested we developers to optimize our apps for the Retina Display, otherwise, they just won't buy or use.

Unfortunatley, in order to develope apps for Retina devices, we will have to buy a Macbook Pro with Retina Display, even it's not "prefect".

So from this point of view, we were all "hijacked" by the new "Retina standard" from Apple, because we have no alternative choice now.

However, from the other point of view, the "Retina Display" is still not an industry standard yet, the "Retina" game is still a solo-play by Apple and other PC vendors still didn't decide to follow the steps of Apple or not. So for now, the "Retina Display" is still a nice-to-have, not a must-have feature for most of the users.

So if I were you, I will refuse to optimize my apps for the Retina Display unless Apple gives us an official annoucement and solution to resolve the Image Retention issue.

If we all stopped working on the optimization, there will not be enough apps for the Retina Display, thus the Retina Display on iPhone and iPad will become meaningless.

I believe that's the most effective way to fight back for our rights now.

Apple has created a huge eco-system for everyone and with no doubt, apple is on top of the foodchain. However, no matter how big and powerful Apple is, each species is important to the whole system, thus, if one link broke, the whole system will collapse very quickly.

    Kind regards,

    One of you !

Hope your wrong.  If its gonna happen, would be easier if it happened in the first 14 days:)  But things aren't always that convenient.

I just got back from the Apple store with my new retina screen replacement. And of course it's an LG. And it's very yellow.

same **** batch as the one i had previously: C9CE8C80

even tho i was shouting at the stupid geniuses, it does not have IR (yet), so cant really do anything really. I'll leave it on all night to accelerate the issue and give it another shot. If i get another LG, i'll ask for a refund.

Do u guys know if they will refund me? i got my computer in July...

    Thanks.

Quick question. Has anyone recently walked out of an Apple store got home and found they had a Samsung display?

    \

I absolutely need to get a Macbook and wondering if theres a chance I'll get a Samsung or will I most likely be jumping in the lottery game?

Just a quick update on my troubles so far.

The third LG rMBP i've had while waiting for my fourth replacement, has gone from slight IR to extreme IR over the two weeks i've been using it.

The fourth one has now arrived, and is an LG panel. It has already got the beginnings of the same problem. Its not got severe IR yet, but has got gradually worse over the last two days i have had it. So this is definitely a problem that gets worse over time from my experiences.

I just got off the phone with Apple ER and Senior Techs, who apart from asking for information have only been able to provide the same old line "engineers are looking into it and so unfortunately i cannot give you more information as they are still gathering data on why this is happening" didnt really help much.

Meant to be speaking to my ER again tomorrow, but i'm not sure i'm that interested in what they have to say, probably just more excuses and still no official response.

@salthustle: Are you getting the whole unit replaced? Humm quite impressive...

In my case, is the third replacement of the display and I am not hoping for anymore than LG. So I am preparing my-self to run for another two weeks before my familiar ghost friend revisit my eyes!

Our laptops should be named irMacBookPro (Image Rentention MBP) and the slogan should be: Not even your retina will escape from looking at it!

I walked out of the Apple Store roughly ten days ago with a week 32 build with a Samsung display, so it can happen, but you'll definitely be playing the lottery.

My replacement rMBP (2.7Ghz/16GB/768Gb) is on the way. This one replaced my former week 32 rMBA with Samsung screen (dead pixels and creaking/flexing case with missaligned bottom plate). The one on the way is a week 37. I keep you informed.

Interesting that the store manager downtown said he never had any returns for IR problems since the release of the retina lol.

As a general rule, unless something has been officially confirmed by Apple, the stores wouldn't admit other cases of returned merchandise. Actually, not just Apple but most of retail business. Understandable since messaging can get diluted. I wouldn't blame the store managers.
