Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Thanks for all the updates. I just got the information from Apple Aftersale Department that my rMBP will be replaced again (3rd replacement). Wonder what will I get this time, probably again LG with IR...

have you checked for image retention? For example if you leave Main Google page for 15 mins, with grey wallpaper, no sign of it?

Looks like a lot of their spare displays set aside for repairs are the same rubbish yellow LG screens.

So it's like dropping your rMBP at the store for repairs, to have another identically defective part replace yours...

Fantastic quality control and supply chain logistics. Reminds me of the time I sued Dell in 2005. They had such cryptic and labyrinthine ways of handling my customer service, I couldn't help but sue them /sarcasm

How about just providing us some constructive feedback before the lawsuits start popping ?

I can apreciate that people with their 'few days old' rMBP with an LG screen come on this thread to report that they do not have the image retention problem (good thing), but color me skecptical about the likelihood of this problem not occuring in the near future.

I hope for nothing more than a color-correct, pixel correct, image retention free display, and if LG can make 'em, all the better.

Unfortunately, some people have demonstrated, over those 162 pages of discussion (all of which I have read), that a week or a month later, IR does show up (on LG screens).

Again, in good faith, prove me wrong, Apple ?

In the meantime, I have better things to do with my computer, say, work ? Just give me a ******* Samsung display, m'kay?

    Peace out.

    +1

I desperately need a laptop and holding out to avoid issues is kiling me. This is so not the Apple I've known for all these years

Ugh. After returning my second LG rMBP with IR and getting my money back. I'm now wondering if I should just wait until next year for the Haswell update which should be faster, extend battery life, and possibly have a better GPU. Certainly by that time they should have resolved the rMBP IR issue.

I was thinking the same. But I don't know if they will take my laptop back. The 14 day thing is long gone.

    Will they accept a refund?

So far so good on LG screen and left image on screen for 20+ minutes.  Do we know if they have fixed the problem with later manufactured machines?

Just received my online-ordered, Week 35 custom build rMBP (2.6GHz/16GB RAM/256SSD). I'm way relieved to see that the Terminal script confirms it's a "LSN154YL01001" Samsung display

I'm a professional photographer & you can be assured that I'll be running this display through many tests to check for IR. So far so good though!

I wanted to chime in because, through skimming this thread, I was under the impression that recently shipped rMBP's were overwhelmingly LG, as if Samsung was either being sold in-store only or predominantly with the base model rMBP's. This is to confirm that (at least with my custom-build) they still apparantly ship Samsung's!

    Best of luck everyone

    Congrats on the Samsung win.

Wouldn't worry about IR. Haven't seen reports of Samsung with IR yet. Dead pixel, light leak, etc. checks still recommended.

We don't know anything, alas, khall330.

We are merely establishing patterns by cross-referencing what we have experienced.

So far, there is no evidence that LG displays on rMBP will not develop image retention (notice the double negative here), because it doesn't necessarily occur on day 1.

Samsung panels, though, are not suffering from image retention at all, so far. Their technology for the retina displays is PLS, very different from the S-IPS of LG. Maybe that means something, maybe not, but it doesn't provoke image retention...

All three LG displays I had/have have yellowish light colors and yellowish greys, and all exhibit/ed image retention.

I tested multiple rMBPs at the Apple Store here in Montreal, the LGs all had image retention within 5 minutes, not so with Samsung displays after 15 minutes (I had to stop testing eventually!)

    Welcome to the retina roulette.

I have been trying to force my Apple Technical/Sales support to send me a Samsung rMBP, but they all claim they have absolutely no chance to check what is the display's manufacturer.
