Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Just got image retention today. It can be seen consistantly now on dark images. I got mine the first week it came out. And it is an LG.

It could take 2, 5, 8 or 10 weeks. It will show up and it will get worse and worse. Sliver lining: 3 month from now there would be hoards of angry users and that might get Apple to admit the fault in LGs.

    IMPORTANT READ!!!!

I know this may sound a little crazy but I notice on my LG screen the back bottom center gets a little warm.  So that got me thinking.

I ran the TestRetention.app and marked down the time it takes to really notice the IR. In my case around the 2 mins mark is when IR is apparent. Waited till the IR disappeared, then I placed my rMBP in front of the AC unit of my house to super cool the back lid. Ran the TestRetention.app again for 2 mins and guess what? IR wasn’t as noticeable as before or in some cases not there at all.

I need more test samples from other people.  This is definably a hardware issue! I REPEAT this is a freaking Hardware Issue!!!!

There must be an image-processing component over heating hence the IR on the display.  I am also guessing the different range of IR is due to the environment (aka how cold your place is) factor.

It might be time to pull out the pitchforks people!

    Pictures for the image people!

    Bad IR Bad!!!

After cooling the lid no IR ***......

As I said before, without Retina-optimized apps, the Retina Display on iPhone & iPad will become meaningless, so Apple needs the support from Mac developers.

If Apple really wants to **** off Mac developers with the anonying image retention issue, we developers may fight back by "refusing to optimize our apps for Retina devices".

Interesting. Now that you mention it, on my last Retina which I tested mostly with the checkboard, the pattern was clearly more pronounced on the bottom half of the screen. That is the more heat prone area as well.

On it being a hardware issue though, you don't need to experiment much. Image Persistence is not a new phenomonon and it has always been a hardware issue.

Yah I need a bigger sample to prove this.  If everyone can do the same I did they should notice the IR not coming up much or not even at all.

    START testing your rMBP's!!!

Let me also remark on your point no. 3.  Just because the only thiefs you met are short, doesn't equate to all short people are thieves.  Point 2 just because you've had reports of 1 thousand thefts, and all were by short people and none by tall people, yet there are also 100,000 people, most who are short, again doesn't prove that all short people are thieves.

I do believe that was the original question?  ie, Apple prove, that all short people aren't thieves:)

Anyways, I'm sorry all, don't mean to post so much, I will just hope my computer is ok and if not will report the 1001th theft by a short person.  At that time, like most here, I will call for end of all short people. (LG's)

Nobody actually cares whether anyone can "prove" that every single LG is flawed.  Obviously that is not possible because LG displays do not follow some sort of mathematical rules to which idealized logical arguments can be applied.

However, the fact that some people on this forum have gotten 5 - 7 LG displays in a row with this flaw indicates to me that it is very, very widespreapread.  If 50% of LG displays have the problem, then you only have a 0.8% chance of getting 7 bad ones in a row.  Are the posters here to whom this is happening really that unlucky?  Not likely.  If 70% of LGs are bad, then you have a 8% chance of getting 7 bad ones in a row.  I'd say this is much more likely to be the case.  I can believe that with an 8% chance of getting 7 bad ones in a row, there is a chance that someone would have had this occurred and posted on this forum.  Thus I would put a lower bound on the percentage of bad LG displays at 70%.  I personally think it is 95% or more, and most people just don't notice it (it does require fairly specific circumstances to reproduce), but obviously I can't prove that.

Yes I read your previous post about not having IR on your rMBP.  Frankly your model must be the rare ones that don't exhibit IR.  Either that or you work for Apple in doing damage control =P
