Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I'm not sure how close your numbers are to reality, although nothing would surprise me anymore, but we should find out soon as this get's out into the wider media and people start checking their own rMBP notebooks for image retention. They are going to be pretty angry when they find out there are two different types of Retina Macbook Pros floating around - those with image retention (LG) and those without image retention (Samsung). I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up increasing sales of Samsung tablets and laptops too (LOL). "If you want a Samsung screen, but a Samsung ultrabook, where all our displays are made by us!" Apple should have nipped this in the bud a month ago when they had the chance to resolve this quietly. Now they're scr*wed!

    Hmm hmm, cough cough,

"I'd like to thank my audience tonight, you guys have all been really good listeners, I hope we can eventually live in a world where retina MacBook Pros come with Samsung displays or non-crappy LG jaundiced ones..."

Again, its just conjecture as to what percentage.

Obviously, lots of people are having problems, I've seen these type of things happen with new releases, nothing from Apple until they figure out if its something they can fix in firmware, or if they have a design problem.  With all the complaints I would be surprised if the MBP pro team is not looking at this right now.  Still doesn't mean that 70 or 90 or even 10 percent are having problems.

Would anyone like to give some opinion on what I should do?

I actually had a student education priced MBPr from Apple Store and exchanged twiced to get a Samsung display.

However someone has an offer of further $200 cheaper with receipt but not from Apple store (not sure about 14 days return policy with other retailers).

That MBPr is sealed and brand new, my one only being used for a week and still be able to return to Apple store for a refund.

But if I take the cheaper one from my friend I might have chance of getting a LG screen and not able to exchange like what Apple store does.

    Any thoughts to share? Cheers

    Jason

Received my rMBP from the Apple Student Store yesterday, custom build as I upgraded to 16GB of RAM. I am excited to report that I have a Samsung screen on my machine.

    Latest update

Got another call from Apple ER and he told me he has to wait and see what the engineers tell him. He hoped te get a response sooner (starting September 4th), but we'll have to wait more. Probably until next week.

He can't do anything without the engineers' response...

For those of you who think LG displays are only in the low-end models... I've got a custom build to order 16GB 2.6GHz with 256GB storage and an LG display. So unless storage dictates what display is used, I'd assume it's totally random based on supply.

Thanks Ratman123 for the test application link.

I like how my post is geting edit and removed.  I see no reason why they were taken out.

    Last post last night:

Has anyone with an LG test out their machine with and without cooling of the top lid?  I just wondering if I am the only one with no IR after cooling my machine.

Guy's please do test out and check to see if cooling your LID will it reduce your IR.

My ER just rang me, they evidently dont want to really deal with this anymore. Its being looked into by the engineers, but everything they are deciding, declaring and finding out about the LG issues, how widespread they are etc is all completely secretive.

I've had four machines now. All with defective LG panels. The ER just wants to give me a refund, or a standard MBP. They dont seem to want to go through the motions of replacement after replacement until i get a Samsung panel, as it seems they've no idea if and when i would even get one. I personally think Apple wont deal with this issue for sometime, if at all. I also got the feeling they just think its me being a very difficult customer now. Which if demanding the premium quality, i paid a premium price for, in a premium product is then i guess i am.

At least they havent started giving me the "within spec" nonsense, but i am starting to feel there isn't any other way forward than to get a refund and wait till Apple recall all these dodgy LG's. Problem is they wont refund me the value of the laptop, only what i paid (as i got them to bump me up to the 2.6/16/500) which ends up being quiet a large defecit.

Sort of at a loss now of what to do...

I'll be doing some testing when I get a chance. I've noticed just directing a fan at the back of my screen does keep it a lot cooler. There may be something to this hypothesis.

I don't know if this really helps reduce IR any but I've been using an "LCD scrub" video once a day. It flashes R G B Black and White for 10 minutes in a strobe effect, (I'd avoid if prone to epilepsy) it's supposed to fix stuck pixels at least. Just make sure you stretch the video vertically to fill the entire screen in QuickTime.

I was going to see if I could figure-out how to make a screensaver like this with Quartz Composer, but I'm not sure how to start...

You must have failed the math class that dealt with probability.

Let's take your hypothesis that perhaps only 10 percent of LG displays have problems. I personally have tested at least a dozen rMBPs with LG displays-- 3 of my own and at least ten at Apple and Best Buy stores. Every one had IR. If only 10 percent (1 in 10) had the issue, then the probability that I would see 12 bad ones in a row is 1 in 10 to the 12th power. That's 1 in a trillion. I may have been unlucky enough to have bought a first generation Apple product but I am not one in a trillion unlucky.

When you add in all the other stories of people who have tested several rMBPs with the same results all happening to know about this thread and posting here then there's a much better chance of all life on Earth being wiped out due to an asteroid collision this year than of only 10 percent of LG panels being affected.

So the truth is there is a high probability that the true number is at least in the high ninety percent range. Since these things are built on a production line with exacting precision I suspect that all current mass production run LG panels have the problem. Is it possible he initial prototypes and limited production runs didn't have the problem? Sure. Is it possible that LG has re-engineered the design, retooled their production line and retrained their workers just in time to build your screen? Maybe, but it's extremely unlikely in my opinion that they could have done so that fast. Plus, other that have gotten panels at the same time and after you have reported the problem.

I know you want to believe that your new LG rMBP won't ever develop the problem as others' have but I'm afraid it doesn't seem likely.

Don't be greedy. Apple is offering you your money back and you're complaining because they won't give you money back for the free upgrade they gave you just to make you happy? Don't be that type of person.

If I were you, I'd take the refund of what I paid and buy a brand new rMBP. Then test it thoroughly during the 14 day return window and return it for a refund if necessary. Repeat if necessary.
