Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Dr Sly you have no luck...I am really hoping my BTO has a Samsung screen, and I do not have to order 4 of these things before getting a working screen.

I am surprised you didn't open it in the store and just return until you got a Sammy

    I was too busy!

I'm bringing back the old one tomorrow, perhaps this new one too, if it exhibits IR. I am testing right now.

Yeah I'm going after my tests. I'm not done at all! I'm buying 'em as long as I don't get satisfaction.

    Howdy folks,

just did some tests with the IR app found on this thread (thank you sir who made this !).

    Well it's odd...

Not a single speck of residual image on the chessboard test after 5, 10, 15 minutes... I'm running it again because of the glare/light where I am at the moment.

Don't know the production date yet, will look it up. I am conscious that the rMBP is but a few hours old, so I will test every day up to the 14 days for IR...

I made an appointment for Monday for my other (flawed) rMBP, and ask for a full refund.

Who knows, maybe I have a *good* LG screen ??? It's oddly on the pinkish side, instead of 'jaundiced' like my last three displays...

Will get back to ya soon, folks.

Can you actually buy the fully loaded one from a retailer? I thought you had to order those from the Apple online store or from an Apple outlet store.

Just wondering, how many of us got our machines from the Apple store compared to having them directly shipped?

    @ Canuck

The maxed out version is the only 16GB RAM version they carry in store. If I had the funds I would go in there and upgrade, the local store was willing to make sure I got a Samsung if I upgraded to the $4K version, it was like a $1300 difference.

    @ Dr Sly

Whats the manufacture date on the new LG and is your screen warm at all? (heat not color)

Hi Sly, my last two LG rMBPs (that I actually tested) did not show any evidence of IR until several days in. And after my first IR experience I was really looking for it. Be diligent, keep the screen on as much as possible and turn the backlight all the way up (it doesn't affect the ocurrance of IR but it does make it easier to see) and keep checking until the last day.

And before anyone says "that's not the way you'd use the laptop in real life" believe me I know that. But I can tell you from experience that even with normal real life usage IR will still show and get really bad. The idea here is to use the screen as much as possible so you can see if IR will develop before the return period is over.

    Hello Canuck,

I went to the same Apple Store since I was closer to it. They have three configs:

    - stock model 2.3 GHz 8 GB RAM 256 GB SSD

    - the 2.6 /8 /512

    - the top of the food chain, 2.7 /16 /768 (which, even with the edu discount, cost me more than 4K $ CAD)

Still no image retention, week 35 I found out, LG with a pinkish hue instead of horrible yellow.

Transfering files right now, takes hours, since I could NOT find a way to use the Thunderbolt cable through Migration Assistant or Target Disk mode of thourgh Recovery Mode.

    Thunderbolt cable: 50 $ + taxes

Trying to use Thunderbolt cable to actually speed up file tranfer: useless.

    Howdy clipcarl,

yeah I know about this stuff, my first/current rMBP did not develop IR in the first few weeks. Second display was as little as 1-2 days. Third one, I saw it faintly before leaving the Genius Bar... Got worse.

This weeek 35 LG rMBP is very different looking from the onset, it's white-pinkish, not hardcore-yellow like my other LG rMBP from week 23 and its 2 replacements LG displays.

I will sure test it every day... But I'm returning the old one before they change their mind again at the store or claim they have no idea what I'm talking about (corporate guy who phoned me told me I could not exchange or repair it anymore, so hello $ back).

I cannot believe it.  2 Months later and I finally get a replacement laptop with a Samsung Screen.

    Color LCD

    LSN154YL01001

With no help from Apple Corporate I must say. They kept trying to tell me they are denying all future claims becuase the LG screens with burn in were operating within apples specs.  I have tested this new display multiple times with no signs of issues as of yet.  Going to look up the build week now to see when it was made.  I will report back what I find.

Edit:  Does not give me the exact build week.  Just that it was built in second half of 2012 somewhere around week 5 or 32.  Here is what I see below.  Not sure if there is another to get the exact build week but from it looks like its a week 32.

Model:- MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)
    Codename:- No codename assigned.
Build Country:- This unit was built in China
Build Year:- This unit was built in the second half of 2012.
Build Week- Week 5 (January) or week 32 (July)
Production Nr.:- This unit was number 911 to be built that week.

But my new rMBP from week 35, and a different looking LG is actually awesome (for now). So imma cross my fingers and test it every day for the next 13 days haha
