Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

Dr. Sly, how do you find out what week your computer is manufactured?  Mine was arrived by Fed Ex last Saturday.

Third MBP arrived today, week 36, and sadly, an LG. I can already see clear image retention on it. It will be going back as well.

I've done had one from week 35 a while ago.  There is nothing wrong with it, plus it is an LG!

So tired of hearing about the LG sucking. Its likely a bad batch! This laptop is freaking awesome!

Its worth every penny, runs blazing fast with multiple VM's, fantastic!!!!!!

Another LG display with IR here. After initially being told it was a software/firmware issue my local Apple store agreed to order me a new display clamshell (which for the moment I opted not have installed because of an unacceptably long turnaround time of 5-10 days.)

Anyway, I think I read somewhere in this thread that replacing an LG display will only get you another LG display. I'm assuming the part numbers would be the same so does only LG supply replacement displays? I'm looking forward hearing about successful repairs (vs. returns and exchanges), so hopefully some of those people report back here. I certainly will when I have time to get mine repaired.

Build Year:- This unit was built in the second half of 2012.
Build Week- Week 1 (January) or week 28 (July)
Production Nr.:- This unit was number 351 to be built that week.

It's obviously not a bad batch. Every LG has the problem. You're blinding yourself to the issue because you want to like the machine. I'm sure it runs multiple VMs, but this is totally irrelevant to image retention.

Interesting article about Apple's supply chain diversification and reduced reliance on Samsung.

Had two LG's, neither one has IR issues. whats that do to your theory?   Of course i must be blind.

    Hi Folks,

    Saturday September 1st

I went to the apple store nearby and demonstrated the IR Problems with my Macbook Pro Retina 16GB. I got a Genius Bar receipt with the promise to tell me the the replacement part arrives so that I can bring the Macbook in order to repair it.

    Monday September 3rd

I brang the macbook pro retina with IR Issues to the Apple store nearby after they send me a mail on monday that the replacement part has arrived.

My first Genius Bar Receipt said a check-in was not required but the Genius at the bar said it was indeed required and gave me a new receipt with a new repair number R73548213 -> R73412964 and they said well the part might be there but the repair cannot be done now even tho I told them that I need the machine for work since my job requires bring-your-own-device.

    Saturday September 8th

    still no message from apple.

    waiting.. waiting.. waiting..

I had 7 MBPr in total. With the first 3 I didn't check for display or IR as they had other issues (dead pixels, scuffs etc.) but the last 4 were LG screens. NONE of them has IR when I checked for it the first day. ALL of them had IR a 1-2 weeks later. I've seen 6 LG screens at the local Apple Store. All of them had IR. So up unitl now, I haven't seen ONE single LG screen without IR after a couple of days/weeks.

I'm guessing you don't have one or both of them anymore.  How long did you have them?
