Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

Hi Guys,

Question: Can I ask a display replacement from Apple authorised service provider because there's no Apple Store here. Dang! I got an LG's display and now showing some IR issue (not really visible) but assume it will get worst soon.

As I mentioned in previous messages, I did not experience any image retention with this unit.  I tested for it though, after finding this thread.  I kept a black logo on white background for 45min on display (no screen saver / dim screen etc).

My reason for returning it was the color temp being far too low.

This one being a Samsung, I didn't expect IR. There's none. However, although slightly less yellow than the first one, it's still improper for professional usage (photography/design for print and web) even after pro calibration.

A week on and my Week 35 model with an LG display (which exhibited no problems such as the yellow tint/dead pixels etc) is still going strong! No problems whatsoever.

First, you have no facts to say EVERY LG HAS THE PROBLEM!  Thats impossible to know. It just shows how your just refusing to be realistic.

Secondly, I'm not blinded by anything.  I'm happy to say my machine is fully working!  The price of it stops me (and perhaps anyone) of being blind to any defects.

Thirdly, don't take things out of context, my comment regarding VMs was to the point that it runs great, read the entire sentence! For that reason its relevant to this discussion.

Lastly.  I'm done with this forum discussion.   It was and IS a bad batch, since the issue isn't widely spread. If it was by design, ALL LG DISPLAYS WOULD HAVE THE ISSUE, which is certainly untrue. Clearly this was a production issue, in regards to the yellow discoloration. Which no longer exists on mine and other machines.

All this complaining while Apple still provides better customer support than most companies.  I'm glad I made the purchase. Have a good day!

It's obviously not a bad batch. Every LG has the problem. You're blinding yourself to the issue because you want to like the machine. I'm sure it runs multiple VMs, but this is totally irrelevant to image retention.

What is happening to serial #'s submitted to a site like this anyway?  Could they be used to relabel stolen equipment or steal services?

Anyway, I cast my lot into the lottery today, BTO online.  Come on, dice, give me a flawless new shiny.  <toss>  We'll see how many times I'll have to throw the dice.

We do not know this.

I can confirm that my second LG replacement screen DCN23XXXX had very very faint IR first day and I could barely produce any. Day 7, IR easily seen and I can reproduce much easier, especially if the screen gets warm ie watching a movie.

This behavior is not normal as the Samsung screen does not produce IR. Apple can stick their heads in the sand all they want saying this is within specs and normal behavior. The Genius at their store certainly found nothing normal about it, or the store manager. If the Geniuses can notice the difference up at the store between the LG and Samsung then the judge will too.

And it wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't the FLAGSHIP product! Come on Apple make it right. If it is a bad batch, get these people the screen they want, don't say it is normal behavior. Its messed up, but I think if it was a bad batch they wouldn't say it is normal behavior. The normal behavior excuse sounds like one you would use when ALL screens are effected.

I have recently observed that the info provided from Sys Prefs/Display/Color/Open Profile is the *same* among completely different display panels, i.e., between Samsung and LG displays !

(I noticed at the Apple Store playing around with the demos and then confirmed using my old one).

There are four entries:

- Manufacturer (always ends with 610, even when Samsung !)

- Model (the only different info, but I can't remember what it was for the two cases. Mu new LG has A00F at the end)

- Serial Number (nothing there anyways)

- Manufacture Date (always C9CE8C80, even the Samsung one, even my far newere LG with a different panel!)

Therefeo, I believe this info to be unreliable at best...

As for the full detailed breakdown of the computer's manufacture date, which website is the best to do that again ?

I have an LG screen, build week 1 or 35, BTO (2.3/16/256). Received the new unit 11 July.

Severe image retention after a day at home (late August) in Vancouver on vacation where Safari was up all day - now banding across the top, even visible with the ML wallpaper. Booked over the phone service call with AppleCare in Sacramento while on hols, asked specifically for the Samsung screen over the original LG, then just dropped into my local in Toronto for a straight swap-out (typing this from the demo Retina, actually -- which already has IR [!!!] ).

Specifically asked if the Genius was putting in a Samsung screen, was told 'it's the newer one' - from the work order there's nothing quite indicating which they're putting in, but will update with further details. Should be done today for pickup.

Guy's Like I said!

test your LG's with a cold LID.  Preferred having an AC unit blasting the back. YOU WILL notice IR will be reduced or not even show up at all.

start with no IR on screen and run the IR test app during. It's a hardware issue with the LG screens over heating.  I am able to replicate the issues each time.

When you use ioreg in the Terminal, which is the output? DCN23XXXXXX or later? Mine is/was DCN23020XXXX

Third replacement ! still IR and also CREAKING NOISE. Well i lost my patience with Apple now. No more return and replacement ! Gotta wait for a month or two until all the problems are fixed.

PS: it's a LG, week 35.

Weird ! I checked five computers total, 3 with LG and 2 with Samsung, same numbers that I mentioned...

You have a Samsung week 34, right ?

I have a new LG week 35 and it's completely different in terms of colour and no image retention so far.
