Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

I've got my rMBP coming in on Friday. It was shipped July 28, so I would assume it was manufactured on week 30. Hopefully there wont be any IR issues.

interesting. I don't think they could replace the screen in 15 minutes! If takes longer than 15 minutes they are changing your screen because I don't think there is any solution for this issue.

I won the [screen] lottery! Just received my 2.3/16/256, and it has a Samsung screen! score! I am still running an image retention test right now.

You're so lucky. I hope that I get a Samsung screen.

I love how the Quality Control is so bad that we're actually hoping that we get one brand of screen. Come on Apple, just drop LG/Sharp, haven't you realized that all of their displays are getting returned ?

Here it is next to an LG display 13inch late 2011 MBA. I would say I got a good display as far as tint goes with my MBA. I can see a bit more yellow in the MBA screen but I am color blind so It could be more apparent. I shot this with a 5d mkIII in RAW edited with LR4.1 AWB on camera=6200k in LR4

I just returned my 2.7/16/758 rMBP that had an LG display. No obvious image retention but im not about to wait until it happens past the 14 days.

I ordered another with the same specs hoping it'd be Samsung. If not i will keep returning my rMBP until it has a samsung screen and with no problems.

Paying 3.5k, settling for nothing but the best

    @ Mayizar

no they cannot replace the screens on the rMBP apparently, because its welded to the aluminum body. Atleast that's what the apple genius said to me.

Either they were lying to you and did not change the screens, or the apple genius was lying to me.

And there is no way they could have replaced your screen in 15 minutes. They would need to glue the display onto the body and let it dry. Taking the screen off would take atleast 10 minutes and the gluing process would take more than 15. Then they need to run tests. They probably just lied to you.

As soon as I'm done getting a working MBA (2nd replacement coming soon) I'm gonna order that same model rMBP an I feel the same as you...  it better deliver with the same screen that's on display at the Apple store or I'm gonna be sending mine back as well.  Here is a good example of the washed out display they sent me vs. crisp and colorful display they show in the store.

Is it just a complete lottery which screen you obtain? I recall seeing the same comparison on Anandtech with the MBA screens where the Samsung was much more clean and vibrant than the LG screen.

I'd hate to end up with the lesser screen on a $3,200 customized laptop. Can you call support and request a Samsung, and also when you get the new replacement is your 14day return period reset?

You cannot call and request anything unfortunately .

    Just keep getting advanced replacements.

    You can't request screens.

There is a disconnect between the online order processing and the manufacturing processing.

There is no way to designate what parts you want or else either LG or Samsung will go out of business with Apple.

Edit: although you can call and ask for the model of your display and if it is LG, just immediately order another laptop to save time. Return the laptop when it arrives to get your money back without even opening the box.

Well I've got room for 2 fully-customized MBPr on the ol' credit card haha so two at a time it is if I get a bad one.

Kriswin, for the advanced replacement option - still wondering if when you get the replacement, whether it resets the '14 day return policy'. I would like to think it would...

    Yes it should.

Because technically what you're doing int he 14 day is RETURN, then ORDER a NEW one.

I am not sure if you asked for a REPLACEMENT.

Becuase what I did was return, then I immediately ordered a new one. Easier that way.

So you just returned it? Did you do the educational discount? Because if mine has an LG I want to return it but dont see how it'll work since I bought one on EDU

You can buy up to 2 computers with educational discount so i immediately bought another one.

You will have to wait until the return is complete, then the educational discount will reset. Although they will charge you for the 100 dolalr gift card if you have used it.

You can find out the model of your display ahead of time?  And Apple doesn't mind if you keep returning them?  I have an MBA that I'm returning, because I'm just not liking the screen.  It is sort of dull, compared to my wife's.  This is the second return.  I returned the first one because the trackpad was bulging out of the case in the middle.  They asked me if I wanted to return or replace that time.  On this return, they just gave me labels, and no options to replace.  So I just sort of figured that you get two shots, and then that's it.
