Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

If a lot of people followed my post, I had noted that the LG models that are having issues with IR are due to an overheated component controlling the image/video.  If you blast cold AC air on the back of the LID and try the IR test you should see that the IR will show less or not at all.

The whole "within specs" is a bunch of bull.

    1) if it's within specs why the Samsung screens aren't doing it.

    2) This isn't like AntennaGate when we are using it incorrectly.  I shouldn't have to be blasting cold air on my 2K plus laptop to prevent a highly praised Display from haunting me to death (aka ghosting/IR for the less funny bones).

Your assumption about what 'usually' happens is based on, errr, what?

I had IR on the first fews days for my previous LG display replacements.

    Just sayin'

No no you're not realizing what this means my friend, it means the opposite of what you think, most likely!

It means they will issue an official statement to the effect that it *is* within the Apple engineering specs!

They already have something like that as a tech note from August 23rd, saying that image retention is 'normal'...

    What do you mean?

This is 30 minutes after having the chessboard image (two test runs). Whay does it matter if it's 5 or 25 seconds after the test?

The image retention that I've had on my three previous displays would not only be very noticeable, it would stay on for quite a while. Minutes. That's why it's called image 'retention', after all!

My picture might have come a few seconds later than I expected, it matters not. This display is flawless.

Hopefully not.. If they'd do that.. A statement that it is within specs.. and that still wouldn't explain why the samsung screens don't have any IR issues and all the others Macs I've owned in the past.

I really, really, really hope that they won't do that...

But there some positive things I noticed. More people are recieving Samsung screens, and there seem to be good LG screens.. like yours...

I find it a bit strange, because both of my LG showed IR right out of the box, as soon as i started it.

All three of mine took at least 10 days or so before you could see it, and that's with leaving them on 24/7 and at least 14+ hours of screen on time every day. In my experience it really takes a bit of use before IR shows up which is why I recommend people find a way to make sure their screen is on constantly during the return period.

I also noted, that the "new" LG screens doesn't have the yellow glare I've seen on the early models in the store.

I did not notice the yellow on any of the LGs at which I have looked, but I don't work with images so maybe I just don't have an eye for it. They all seemed fine to me color-wise though maybe not as bright as I would like.

I understand that U want to run screen within the 14 day return period as much possible, but leaving it one overnight with a static image for say 10+ hours does not really constitute "normal usage" That way you'll just generate IR while your screen may still be less likely to have IR than say some of us on this thread..

I my case, its like 5 mins.. what U could do leave screen on, with changing image.. or just use it alot.. generate enoigh heat..

Of course it's not normal usage. The idea is to use it as much as possible to accelerate the onset of IR so that you know whether your display has the problem while you still have time to get a refund. My first rMBP I just used normally and IR showed up, but it took 3-4 weeks before it became obvious. Fortunately, I was able to get my money back.

Once you have IR, it doesn't matter how long your computer has been on. You could turn on your computer after being off all night and leave your email on screen for just a few minutes, close the window, and the image of the email window will linger on for several minutes afterwards. Turning the computer or screen off regularly does not keep IR from happening. It just slows down the onset of IR so that it could weeks before you notice it. And IR just gets worse and worse over time.

    So the good news...

    my 2nd order just arrived:

    2.6/16/512

    LSN154YL01001

    DLM234602PYF49HBQ

SAMSUNG!!!! Literally just unboxed it so no tests yet... will have to post again later.

However, the BAD news... there is a faint scratch to the top left of the touchpad. OK, very faint, but I'm not happy about that. Also the keys don't feel anything as nice as the LG I had before. Especially those on the lower rows - my 'n' key is terrible!

I'm not trying to be fussy, but seriously Apple - W T F has happened to you? Where is your Quality Control?! I spend £2100 GBP on a laptop and you can't get it right at all.

Do I order yet another, and pray for both a good screen AND no cosmetic defects?

    What would you do? Sigh....

I'm not so sure about the posts that suggest that heat build up is the cause of IR. On more than one occasion I've had my rMBP turned off completely, driven an hour to the Apple store, waited for my "genius" appointment and been able to demonstrate IR to the "genius" with the machine only having been on for 5-10 minutes at most. And the Apple store is well air-conditioned!

Maybe heat causes a similar or related effect which is why some people say they have IR that started as soon as they got their laptop and why some people say it goes away when they cool the screen. Maybe these people are running apps or use their rMBPs in an environment which gets it a lot hotter and therefore IR (or something similar) happens a lot easier / sooner than for those of us for whom it takes several days or weeks of use.

Yeah, I've noticed that the keyboards on the rMBP don't feel nearly as nice as the one on my 2011 17 inch MBP and there is a lot of variance between individual rMBPs. In general the rMBP keyboards feel a little mushier / sloppier than previous years. I've personally had my hands on several of these rMBPs because of the trouble I've had and I've noticed that very often not all of the keys feel the same as the others too. In particular I've noticed that the A, S, and D keys can feel a bit softer than the rest which is a bit distracting.

That said, it is still a good keyboard, just not as good as the previous generation. One positive thing I've noticed about it is that on every rMBP I've seen or used the backlighting is completely uniform and even. That was a common problem on previous years' MBPs and it appears they've solved it. Still, if given a choice between have a keyboard that feels perfect and a keyboard where the backlighting is perfect I'd choose feel.

Try to rub the scratch with your fingers. Me too thought I have a big faint scratch on the surface of my enclosure but it was some deep machinery residu or something. I could't remove it with micro-fiber and eye glass cleaner, but with my bare finger I could.

Further more, if the scratch is real, I would send it back.

I don't want to be overly excited, but don't you think this discussion is 'slowing down' a bit? There are fewer new cases than a couple of weeks ago.

    This could be good news!
