She told me that Apple will soon be making an announcement on their web site regarding this issue, hopefully within the next week, but she can't promise 100% on the timeline. I do really think they're working on this. She never gave me any lame excuses about IR being within the spec and she asked me a lot of questions (i.e. How long does it take for the image to be retained? How long does it take to disappear afterward?).
This is great news, and something I'm hoping for happens as soon as possible so we get rid "within apple specification" argument. I've been holding out after my first visit to Apple Store's genuis bar and mutiple calls to AppleCare, hoping for the above to happen.
IMHO, I do think they'll do this but they probably wait till after the 12th of september, or till when the iPhone 5 (or whatever they call it) is avaible for sale. It won't be the flagship product anymore, and it won't be occupying there homepage no more.
Thing is, should I wait for this since I really don't feel like joining the samsung screen lottery, or should I just demand a replacement, like others have succesfully done on this forum on after the 14 days..
LOL, don't get your hopes up because I was basically told the exact same thing about a month ago after getting my second bad rMBP. I was told I should check the Apple KB articles and search for "image retention" or "ghosting" for the new article.
After 2 weeks of waiting (which was 2 or 3 weeks ago), I called them again to see if they had any news because the only KB article I could find was one from 2011 that basically said "you're doing it wrong" with instructions on setting your screen saver, etc (I've previously posted a link to the KB article in this thread). They guy I talked to (the same guy that had been helping me for a while) confirmed that this was the article the hardware guys had referred him to and we both noticed it had been recently updated.
It is possible there is still some confusion going around within Apple and I would really hope they put together a coherent, consistent response that satisfies the majority of customers. But for now, it's stil a big mess.
I really don't think they will make any sort of official statement until the screen problem has been resolved by LG and they have started to work the last of the bad screens out of the system. There's just no way they can say "all LG screens are bad" and that "the only definitely good screen is a Samsung screen". So until LG has proven they can consistently produce good screens w/o IR (which could take several more weeks given that the problem sometimes only appears after several weeks), we'll have to keep dealing with this mess.
For myself, I'm thinking tha if this hasn't been fully resolved by the end of the year, I'll just wait for the Haswell CPU bump next year, which should be out by June/July (if not sooner).
