Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Just got a new built to order today and by far this is worst screen I've gotten yet. Not only is this screen slightly dimmer than my previous LG rMBPs I can already see slight IR and I've only been using it for 5 hours. I apologize if I've doubted those that have said they've had IR on the first day right out of the box. This is the first one I've had where IR showed up in less than a week. Wow. Needless to say it's going back. BTW, I do see what people mean when they say these displays are a little yellow though I don't think it's too bad.

So much for newer ones being better:

    Color LCD

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN234xxxxxxxxxxx

    LG:
    Quality Control? What's that?

    Apple:
LG! Shhhhhhh. If you just stay quiet and don't say anything, theyll lose interest and stop bothering us.

and I thought the newer screens were better than old ones. Wel, DCN232xxxxxx + are still having IR issues..

Dear Apple, please solve this issue ASAP! this is ludicrious.. why pay so much for machine that has a defective screen, when it screen is its USP...  Its nice that its thinner, great that has SSD, but if those were the only added on features, i would of gotten an Macbook air, which btw now seems in hindsight to of been the better choice...

But Apple doesn't care.. unless you swear.. than its edited by <edited by HOST> who thinks he is the MOST.. and that rhymes with Ghost.. ..

All of the rMBPs I've had built with 16GB of memory have come with LG screens. Has any one had a built to order machine that came with 16GB and a Samsung screen? I'm just wondering if there's any correlation.

Also, though I doubt there's any significance, do any of you that have gotten Samsung screens on a built to order machine remember on what day of the week you ordered?

I don't know anything about the recent serial numbers and/or code. Can you guys tell me if I have the "latest" LG?

Yours is for sure one of the latest. Dr Sly has a DCN23270*** but yours is newer with DCN23460***

Sending old laptop back to get full refund, new order arrived today 2.6/16/256 and its another LG. Haven't tested for IR yet, but what a difference compared to my repaired screen! First off, the color is dead on, when you put it side by side, not only is my new machine have a brighter lcd but it has a cooler color temp. My replacement screen looks yellowish on the galaxy background. You can see much more detail on my new machine and its MUCH brighter. About the same brightness as my original screen, and two bars brighter than the repaired screen. Reminds me a lot of my original screen actually because there was nothing wrong with it, it was perfect it just had really bad IR that got worse as time progressed.

Its a DCN232407****, maybe its from the same batch as Dr Sly idk. I'll test for IR later and will be keeping a very close eye on it for the 14 day period.

Here are some pictures, repaired LG on left, new LG on right. I know its hard to tell in photos especially using my phone as a camera, but you can still notice the difference in blue. What concerns me is seeing a difference in these displays at all, I mean I noticed the difference in the repaired screen from my original right away. Ntm that I have seen a Samsung and that is different looking as well.

Hopefully there is no IR, I will keep everyone posted and the repaired screen on left was a DCN23030****

I have my original rMBP that arrived 7/9 - 16 GB/2.6 GHz/512GB with Samsung screen. I have had no problems with it, but the screen is not as white as the one on my iPad. it isn't yellow, but more like ivory in color. Is that the way it is supposed to be? I prefer the screen on the iPad. I hesitate to take it to Apple for a replacement because of all the issues I have seen here.

Sounds like you have a pretty good screen compared to some of us here. Unless you prefer bright yellow and ghost images.

I am on my 4th rMBP.  I just received it yesterday.  It is a week 37 build.  It still has Image Retention.  Order #5 submitted this morning.  I think I'll stop and give up at #7.  Outside of the Image Retention, I have not experienced any yellow screens or any other issues.

Also, anyone messed with the keys, do they pop out easily?

My brightness keys are slightly more loose than all the other keys. I figured I would try swapping the keys from my old retina to see if it changes anything.

I wouldn't try replacing the keys if I were you. Modern keyboards are much tougher to replace keys on then even just a few years ago. I would let Apple handle it.

+1. Mine is produced in the week 34, LG display. I have it for 1.5 weeks. No IR, no other issues on the display. I am very satisified with the screen now.

Did you do the checkerboard test or have you just been using it normally and watching out for IR?

I figured as much. Already able to produce IR on the new screen. Doesn't take long, I have a bunch of classes online and they have video lectures that take up a quarter of the screen and the rest is text. After watching a lecture (15min) if I hide Safari the you can see where the video was and the text. The video also gets the system working to warm things up which also seems to help in reproducing. This being my 3rd LG screen with IR, and Apple now saying IR is normal and within specifications, I have come to the conclusion I have the following options:

    1) Accept IR and a possible lower resale value and try to limit it by using a white screensaver

    2) Return the new machine and order a new one hoping my 4th will be a Samsung screen without IR

    3) Get a regular MBP

    4) Give up on Apple

So I had Apple ER on the phone again today.  They're not prepared to order me another replacement, even though the first replacement is worse than the orginal unit (darker, yellower, similar amount of IR after one day.)

Seriously, who decides how many are ok?  Hearing repeated stories of people getting 5, 7 or even 9 replacements, and yet I'm not allowed a second?

I ordered on June 12th and sold my old MBP shortly after (which was a 2008 model, which had three GPU/logic-board failures, followed by battery + drive failures just out of warranty, as well as ever-increasing amounts of muras, making the screen appear like it had white measles...  I never got any use out of that machine at all, had to buy a Mac Pro to do any serious work.  I sold it for next to nothing, because that was what it was worth.)

Now I have a business trip where I need to do a talk in front of hundreds of people, and no computer to do it on.  The irony is I haven't even used the original machine or the replacement for fear of damaging them before returning them.  So Apple are currently holding over £5000 of my cash for three months, and I have nothing to show for it, unless I buy a third machine through a different channel, giving them access to £7500 instead.

This is getting VERY frustrating.  I'm seriously starting to think I'm gonna get my first PC of the decade.  I mean, it can't be much worse...?

The customer service has been good up 'till this point, but the mixed messages they're currently sending out about this issue really concern me.
