Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

I started with the genius bar, then AppleCare, and was escalated to Executive Relations, where I was dealing with two different guys, one of which was specific to online orders (and the more helpful of the two.)

Avoid exposing the displays to high ambient temperatures. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures very likely accelerates the degradation of the liquid crystal material, which would increase the risk of image retention occurrence.

That's an interesting bit. Supports the previously discussed theory of IR increasing (or becoming more apparent) with heat.

I think Apple should post a support article on reducing IR through carrying a fan. Maybe even release an iFan powered by "Lightning" connector that can be fixed to the back of the LCD. Soon retina bags/cases will come with an iFan container. It'll be fun.

The more I read this topic, the more I know I should've waited ordering a new rMBP...

By the way, my old one has been picked up today.

    Sigh.

Just for completeness sake I will have to continue to share my plight. Three weeks ago I was quite happy that I received a new screen with apparently zero image retention. Yeah, LG, but no retention, even after prolonged tests.

Two weeks later and there is very clear image retention. Just like before. This time I didn't go to the Apple Store, I sent it in (less hassle and no transport costs, though likely slower turnaround). It’s currently on its way with UPS.

If I once again receive a faulty screen I can luckily withdraw from my contract of sale and basically get a refund (I got clarification on German law, just in case). I would much rather get a MBPr with a non-defect screen, though, but what can you do.

One thing’s for sure, no more repairs for me. If this happens again to me I will demand that Apple either exchange my machine or give me my money back. The money back part they are legally obligated to.

Maybe now that the big iPhone announcement is out of the way they can get back to focusing on the Mbpr's....well at least we can wishfully hope so anyway ;)

Did they get a handle on this yet? Can I get my screen replaced/fixed? Or will I get the same issues on a new screen as well?

They did NOT handle this yet. So, if you're outside of the 14-day window, I'd suggest you wait for a bit. Hopefully they'll find a solution soon.

Definitely outside the 14 day window. It was about a month before the display started ghosting. I can even see the image against a purple aurora background when I use the Launchpad. It's really bad and completely unacceptable. I do have Applecare of course and I hope that they will fix it. Otherwise this will be my first and last Mac.

Though I must say that it's been a while now and it's horrible that Apple hasn't officially done anything about this. That is NOT the company I've always heard about from friends. I'm pretty shocked...Because this is exactly the kind of stuff that Apple's supposed to be good about.

Can I get this fixed fast if I have a 3 year Applecare?

I had two build-to-order units, both had the image persistence, both were LG screens.

My question is, what has the experience with straight retail machines? Are people having better luck buying the stock config from retail stores?

I got mine from an apple retail store. I'm actually thinking about going in and seeing if their display models on the tables suffer from the IR as well.

But are you having the issue? Which panel does it have?

Yes of course. I bought it from a retail store and I have an LG panel and it does have IR. It took about a month to show up.

@olli.vdl. That's interesting that the display identifiying app gives you that error. It's worked on all the rMBPs I've used, and worked on another user's here on this thread. However, after I saw your post, I tried it on my iMac, and I did recieve a similar error message.

As another user said, try changing a security permission temporarily that allow programs downloaded from unregistered developers to run. It's a new feature with either 10.7 or 10.8 (don't remember which). Prior to these releases, in 10.6 it just let you run any app, but displayed a warning message if it was unidentifiable.

The option is in System Preferences > Security and Privacy, in the General tab. Then, change allow applications downloaded from "Anywhere" instead of just "Mac App Store."

    Sorry that it didn't work!
